Hello,
I\'ve been trying to research on whether or not the RX-7 can use an import number plate? (obviously the imports lol). I know there is a lot of guff about having European Community Whole Type Approval and whether the vehicle’s construction/design cannot accommodate standard size number plates.
I\'m looking to get the smallest legal sized number plate available. I have a kit which really doesn\'t suit a horrible big UK standard sized number plate, it would ruin the look :)
Any help would be appreciated!
yep, if the car has no space to fit a Std size UK plate you can run a smaller one!
The text on a UK plate is 82mm and with the reflective you need around it makes the plate 110mm high and 520 long (IIRC). But the legal limit for smaller a plate 64mm text hight with 10mm reflective around, making the plate 84mm high and a good bit shorter!!
If you are stuck for somewhere to do one for you, give me a yell as I tend to do a few for the FD\'s ;) info@d-signstudio.com
Plate in my Avitar is a small legal size
Jono
what\'s a number plate?
is that the square thing that sits on the dash?
To the letter of the law then no, an FD cannot use an import size plate because the vehicle does have european whole type approval, the very fact that there are official UK FD\'s means that strictly speaking, you have the ability to fit a UK size plate. It doesnt just have to be in import, it has to be an import and that model of vehicle not have whole vehicle type approval to allow you to have an import size plate. Basically there\'s been a UK version of the car, so owners have the ability to acquire parts to make it legal. JDM only models, a Nissan Stagea for example, could quite easily plead the JDM plate argument.
However, and this is the big proviso here - your average... okay scrap that, most police officers I know wouldn\'t know number plate legislation when it comes to imports even half as well as they should. I bet even most VOSA staff would have to check too. MOT? It seems hard enough for them to know the manual for a standard UK car never mind and import, so I\'m pretty sure you\'d be fine.
I\'ve got a 5 character registration number, and have UK characters, with the plate cut to the smallest legal size as outlined on the DVLA plate.
Number plate last I checked mine was in the garage :p
