Title: power steering leak
Post by: wiggman2030 on April 02, 2011, 11:23:29 AM
Hi,

I have a power steering leak on my fd. I think I have found the problem. It looks like what I think is the cooling lines (silver tubing) has been rubbing against the anti roll bar. I had a feel and the piping is actually touching the bar. Can I just replace this tubing with some copper pipe and secure it a bit further away from the anti roll bar or do I need to get a replacement. I\'m sure a mounting or something must have snapped for the pipe to to be that close to the bar. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Also while I\'m at it. I had a little look around the internet to see what type of fluid to use. The stuff in there currently doesn\'t really look like atf or the other mineral based stuff. So what fluid should I use to replace what was lost. Can\'t seem to find any info on it.

Hey, I don\'t see why there would be a problem with making a colling line from copper, just the corrosion I guess.  As for the fluid, I\'m going with some castrol dexron III stuff. It\'s ment for power steering units and automatic gear boxes so it will do for me.

Is it on the high or low pressure side ?

them pipes are on the low pressure side, theres a high pressure hose that goes from the pump to the rack and then from the output on the rack though the metal pipes to the plastic nozel on the power steering reservoir. (if memorys right) im only using the high pressure line as i plumbed in an oil cooler for the power steering fluid

You should be fine, I\'ve got hose on the low pressure side to an oil cooler behind my front mount to keep the power steering fluid cool.

Cheers for the help, I\'ll get this sorted as soon as I can. I\'ll use some dexron III stuff as well
