Title: Serious question - fire extinguisher system
Post by: m1tch on March 28, 2011, 10:38:17 PM
Hi all,

What setup for a fire extinguisher system would everyone recomend? I know DW sells a twin nozzle system for about £130 all in:

http://www.driftworks.com/shop/safety/2-25l-plumbed-in-fire-extinguisher-kit.html

What fuel extinguisher systems have other people run? not really happy running the T88 with over 4.5Ls of fuel injected per minute plus meth injection without an extinguisher system.

What would everyone recomend? I guess this question is mainly aimed at the track focused car owners on this.

The best type of extinguisher for an oil/fuel based fire is an AFFF extinguisher, it is designed to deal with oil and fuel fires and creates a foam blanket and breaks up oil/fuel using detergents.  If left, the foam can be quite corrosive so if you use it you need to wash it off afterwards but it\'s damn effective.  If you fit an AFFF extinguisher you ought to fit a battery kill switch as well as you shouldn\'t use AFFF on an electrical fire.

You may want a three nozzle system one aimed at the fuel rails one around the meths tank and a third for yourself.

If you are going for a fire system...first understand this isnt designed to save the car....it is designed to give you the chance to get out!  If it does save the car then that is a bonus!

You need at least 4 nozzles.  1 to go into the plenum, one to go on to the manifold and two for the cabin.

Dont get a system that isnt serviceable here in the UK.  SPA who we use, but there are lifeline and now I believe that Silverstone Autosport (also on here) are agents for Sparco extinguishers.  I bought an OMP and it went wrong....I had to send the whole kit back to Italy...just not worth while so bought British as it made it sooooo much cheaper!

A mechanical one is the cheapest way forward, but with that you will run 2 cables....a little unsightly, but one will go to the outside of the car.  YOU need to make sure you keep the pin in place otherwise so idiot could pull the handle and then flood your car with foam!  It only takes for you to forget to undo the pin and youve lost the system.

Electrical systems are a lot more...usually about £300, but they do have an electrical button on the outside...and it doesnt matter how hard you press it, off is off!

You shouldnt go for anything less than 4litres either for a turbo car.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks AtomixRex, that was exactly the sort of information I was looking for, if im not able to get out the car intact then I wouldn\'t need to worry about the engine surviving!

I will probably go with an electrical system then, I have seen a few around, where should I look at getting one from?

Would the best location for the tank be in the rear of the car due to the extra size of the 4 litre tank?

Thanks for your help on this, I need to get this right first time
