Hi im new to the forum and also new to the rx7\'s. I have asked a few question without introducing myself.
A month ago i came accross a rx7 which i liked very much and it was my mates vehicle so i asked him if he wanted to sell up. He said that he was interested in selling but the car doesnt start. so i did a little research and found that there could be numerous things wrong with it. obviously at a large extent it would need a engine rebuild. so i budgeted for the rebuild and i manage to pick up this rx7 for £1000

i feel that this is quite a tidy piece of kit. ignore the tape around the fuel cap, this is because i am yet to fix the catch on it.
Ok so i got the car home on a trailer which was interesting. lol
Opened up the bonnet and everything looked ok, i found out that the last time the car actually started was november last year, i did a fuel little test\'s, flooding being the first one but it didnt start,
Changed the fuel pump as last one wasnt working, changed the fuel filter (what a fun job), checked all the fluids and still car didnt start. I then bought myself a new battery which made the car turnover faster, after this i then bought some brand new ngk 9\'s all round spark plugs,
And then bang the car turns on straight away.
I was shocked, but very happy. been blowing the car out to get rid of all the excess crap lying in around.
So that is basically upto now, unfortunately car isnt taxed or mot\'d so this is what ill be doing next.
Are these cars ment to give out a fair bit of smoke from the exhaust, its not loads of smoke its only smell of oil and just little clouds shooting out every now and then. or would you say i have an emissions problem or something else
Thanks for reading and hopefully somebody can help with my question
Cheers
James
Duff plugs have caused more issues than I care to remember :)
Well done for using your loaf, you\'ve grabbed a bargain there :)
And welcome to MRC :wave

If you have an RX-7 then you have an emissions problem hahaha. My advice would be to make good friends with a tame local MOT man :Giggle
Kidding aside though, well done for scoring what looks like a proper bargain. If it\'s burning oil the turbos could be on the way out, have a look in the intercooler pipes and see if they\'re full of oil. Another possiblity is the side seals on the rotors not controlling the oil very well, the springs compress and get gummed up over time and stop the seals working very well. The best solution would be to take it for a blast and try to clear it out, see what happens but obviously that\'s a bit tricky without it being on the road.
If only we could all find what seems like a good looking FD for £1000!! Welcome to the club and post some more pics up!
Good look with any problems you encounter, i for one wouldn\'t know where to point you. Is there a Rotary specialist down your way? Might be worth a quick check over?
Cheers. Will be taking it to the mot test station on monday. Am i right in saying that as long as you have insurance on the car you can take it straight to the test station and then straight back without tax or mot. Is this correct?
Yeah, if the MOT\'s pre-booked I believe that\'s the case
Ok MOT is booked in for tuesday morning. First time driving it down there so we\'ll soon see if the engine goes pop. Lol. Im after some clear headlight units for the car. Where can you get some. Im also after clear lenses for the sidelight in front bumper. Any.help would be awesome.
Cheersf
Looks to be a bargain as I thought I was doing well when I bought mine for £900 with a terminal engine. Mine had a broken fuel flap too another common trait as well as various broken plastics bits!.
You\'ll be fine driving to a pre-booked MOT so long as you have insurance. I drove my kit car to an MOT before it was even registered so no number plate, tax etc. Even got stopped on the way by a traffic car but no laws broken so let on my way.
Congrats on your bargain! :D

Those are the pictures as requested. out of interested, what type is this r7? i cant seem to find information anyway, even in the log book. I only need to know what type because of insurance purposes. Any idea how to work it out?
Cheers
Look on the sticker in the door jamb, you should have one rather like this;

The "Grade" bit will most likely have "R" in it, most are Type R\'s. You can double check by seeing if it has twin oil coolers, which is the most obvious clue. Don\'t get excited by the "Special Edition" heading, if it\'s like mine and blank under this, it isn\'t a special edition, just a boggo Type R. If it was a special there\'d be like "Bathurst" or "RZ" or whatever in there.
Type X\'s were the touring version, most clearly identified by a sunroof and cruise control and stupid pointless shlte like that. UK domestic market versions had a different rear bumper with a letterbox type number plate aperture with a red fog light at each end of it (well, one was a fog light, one was a dummy for symmetry, go figure). Highly unlikely to be a UK model, they only sold about 130 and most have long since returned to the soil unless extremely well looked after. They also suffered from a really boIIocks pre-cat in the downpipe and have a more stringent emissions test, so hopefully it\'s not one of them.
Is thatclear as mud :Giggle? HTH :Thumbs-up
brilliant thank you very much
