Title: Some more question...
Post by: Kamatari on March 25, 2011, 12:50:20 PM
Ok two things now, firstly when removing the front wings (the bottoms of them are all rusty so taking them off to weld up), just wanting to check really how people removed the wings, do you have to take bumper/nose cone off?

And secondly, looking under the car we noticed around the exhaust/catalyst there is a pipe on the right of it that looks like it has been cut and have no idea what its for, cant seem to find it in a haynes manual and it seems to be have some air come out of the pipe when the engine is on so im assuming this is something with the air pump?

is your car a single turbo by any chance ? if so, could well be a screamer pipe... point 2 I\'m referring to ;)

i think its original untill after the cat which has been replaced

either the pipe is blocked from the exhaust, or your car must be stupidly loud!!

Does look like a screamer pipe, maybe it used to be a turbo but swapped the engine for an egi??

wouldn\'t say its that loud.... my mx5 is louder ;)

the log books dont mention anything about being a turbo or anything in the notes section about the engine being changed, just calls the car an \'RX7 2\'

if it had the engine swapped, i take it they use the same exhaust manifold?

Yes your right, you do need to take the bumper off to remove the wings. It\'s a pain to do mostly because the bolts are rusty and it\'s awkward, you WILL need extensions for your ratchet and it\'s also easier if you have the front on axle stands with the wheels removed so you have loads of room to get the wheel arch liner out the way.
If it goes anything like the two ive done you\'ll snap all but the top two bolts holding the bumper on, no worries just zip tie the bottom back together when your done.
Also that pipe is your split air pipe for emissions, it puts clean air through your cat to clean it up a bit. If you have no air pump or cat it\'s useless. :Thumbs-up

Correct on the bumper - I sheared every single bolt down the sides!

I don\'t think that\'s the pipe he means, look to the right of the exhaust downpipe...

I have that pipe on my EGI, according to the manial it\'s something like a flow pipe that simply runs alongside the standard exhaust and exits through it\'s own little piece of pipe before you get to the back boxes. It doesn\'t seem to really be all that important as mine is that short as well.

Seem to be failing miserably at finding you a picture :/

Unless of course I\'m thinking of the wrong pipe and your exhaust isn\'t set up properly. The standard NA has a pipe down either side, one goes into the CAT, and the other follows the length of the exhaust down one side. The one meant to go into the CAT is from your air pump and honestly I;ve forgotten what the other one does. Should give you some idea of what it\'s for?

cheers for the replies everyone!

the one going into the cat from the airpump is there, and on the other side of the cat is this pipe going to nowhere but im assuming its just some breather pipe? car all seems to run fine (apart from my tempermental idle which changes from being high to running normal and then hunting )

It\'s something like a flow pipe or breather pipe, on the OEM diagram it runs the length of the exhaust up til about 6 or so inches from the backbox and is then cut off into an open end just like yours is now. The only thing your missing from it is the same thing missing on mine - the length of pipe that simple makes it longer. No idea why it was meant to be that long in the first place, seems a waste of materials IMO but they must have had their reasons! And likewise, mine seems to run perfectly fine without. So you \'should\' be fine, but if anybody knows any better then please do correct me :)

BRETT!! This is where your EGI expertise would be helpful as you know what it\'s actually for ;P

Take an engine bay shot, might help with identify what you have :)

Because some of us (like me) only know about TII\'s :p

Prof probably knows tbh, he\'s got a head full of knowledge, useful or otherwise!

I\'ll double check tomorrow.. but I\'m pretty certain its one of the split air pipe feeds...

I\'ll get an engine bay shot done as i\'d love to know where this \'initial set connector\' is located as from everything i\'ve read it doesn\'t look like ive got one :p

Alas not,

The UK EGI\'s are a mistery to me - I don\'t have PDF service manual for the UK one, only the US - and the UK one got distributor, real coils, and some weird co axial exaust system.  Brett has the service manual - so get a picture up and he can identify what\'s what :)
