Title: Average MPG querie
Post by: jgraham95 on March 24, 2011, 09:24:27 PM
Im curious. I know most people suposedly get around 18-20 mpg from their rex8 but im averaging 12mpg.
Now im not hugely heavy on the food n i never accelerate to quickly. Is this signs of a possible fault with the car? If so can you point me in the right direction what might be causing it?
Or do most of you really get the same sorta mpg as me? I mainly city drive btw

They don\'t like urban driving but 12 mpg is still low.  It could be a failing cat blocking the exhaust.

BALLS BALLS BALLS! ...and can\'t edit!

Didn\'t realise this was the rx8 section! (shouldn\'t have stayed up for P1 of F1 2011)!

anyway the above is for a TT \'96 FD

Should have stayed up for P2 ;)

I get less than 18 in my R3 but I\'ve stopped working it out now. :D

Hi there my weekend car is a three rotor JCE Cosmo it usually only goes out weekends however I drive it, it always seems to returns 17mpg e3ven when pushed hard. Perhaps you should treat yourself  get a Cosmo, mine only cost £6000 probably a lot less than you paid for REX and it only had 50k on it
I wouldn`t swap it    Regards Dave

You can get 27 mpg from an RX8 on a cruise and if driven in a spirited manner then you\'ll get 18-20 mpg.

12 mpg for urban driving sounds like a duff catalytic converter.  Worth checking coil packs too.

hm. the coils should be ok. the coils got replaced recently. Would these errors uz have mentioned show up as a OBD error? as it seems im gettin nothin on that.

An OBD Fault will only show if the Engine Light is on.  You might find a fault in the pending memory but this could just be a transient.

Does the performance feel a bit flat?  A decent RX8 zips from 6-9000rpm rapidly but one with a duff cat will feel flat and sometimes will not rev to its redline.

Unless it\'s motorway driving you won\'t see over 20mpg from any FB, FC or FD... So a combined cycle of mid teens isn\'t too bad :o

12mpg around town in an RX8 is low enough for me to be suspicious of a failing cat.

That would defo explain why mine eats away at my wallet all week. My cat is bust lol. So new cat and coil packs... mo money mo moeny :(

I\'ve got a 2003 231ps RX-8 and I\'ve had it since June 2011. I\'ve kept all of my fuel logs, on a combined cycle (80% town driving, 20% motorway) I\'m getting 22.71 MPG average.

It has never dropped below 285 miles per 50 litres (full-warning light) even when driving like I stole it. In fact it doesn\'t seem to make much difference if you drive at 70 MPH or 90 MPH :)

Here`s a tip ;)
Daily driver = MPG
RX-cars = SPG , there simply is no other way to justify em, and its the most correct way of meassuring em ;)

Happiness is:

A warmed up rotary.
A full tank of fuel.
A challenging piece of tarmac.

Cancel my calls this will take all afternoon! :D

Depends on the tarmac.  On certain tracks I can probably do a tank in less than an hour\'s driving!

I know I dont own an rx8, but I\'m really not finding my (stock) FC hardto live with, my Vito is currently un available and that leaves me with the FC as the mode of transport. I\'m not any good at working it out but I can easily seem to get around 100 miles out of a quarter of a tank, I\'m driving normally usually around town but do try to take her up to the redline at least once on every journey.

I used to get that on a run, on a 60 litre tank it works out at about 28 mpg.  I do 25k a year though so running my diesel daily saves me loads as that does 50+ mpg.
