Yeah... it\'s got brand new rotor housings and plates.  They were all taken to Pip who ported them for me...

Looking good adam:cool:

Have you managed to take the water pump studs out in order for the front end plate to sit flat on that wooden board? Or did you simply drill holes in the board where the studs go? Cos that is a nice little touch to get the engine to build up nice and flat. Think i\'ll have to start drilling some holes ;)

Paul:)

You can actually take them out easily. But with mine being a new front plate the studs come in a seperate packet to fit at a later date....

I hope to be bolting on my turbo this weekend :)

Nice clean work, watch it don\'t slide off that bench!:D
What spec are you taking it to?
Title: Block rebuild Pics
Post by: Adam on June 11, 2004, 07:00:36 PM
Well....  the the block is ported by pip.  I have a front mount intercooler (Greddy) 1300CC injectors, Blitz nur spec with mid pipe. Apexi power FC and commander and a HKS T04E turbo kit.  Plus a few other bits  :)

I would highly recommend anyone thinking of rebuilding their engine themselfs, to do it......  i have learned so much and it\'s not too hard with the aid of a rebuild video.

Hi Adam,
you are so right!
Rebuilding it yourself is really rewarding. Although I wouldnt have been able to do it without that video, did you use the same one by Bruce Turrentine? I also used the FD workshop manual.

Do a search on these here boards for Rotary Aviation. If you e-mail Laura she will be able to sort you out with a full "master" rebuild kit and the Bruce Tarantine rebuild video:cool This kit comes in at about $1000 including shipping to the UK, which may sound like a lot of $$$ but you really do get everything you need. I\'ve just recieved one yesterday and the amount of stuff you get in the kit in unbelieveable. It would cost at least £1000 if you you were to source all the parts from within the UK:eek:.

Check out Rotary Aviation (http://www.rotaryaviation.com)

I think Adam also got his kit from these guys.

Regards, Paul:)

Yep Laura at rotoary aviation is the person  to speak to.  I got the monster rebuild kit from there......it has everything you need even all the sealants.

The rotor housing and plates were from Pip at WGT 01606 48866.  He also ported the parts for me.  The plates and housings can be bought direct from Mazda though.

I would highly recommend getting the video from Laura first and have a good watch of it to see if you think you have the time and experience to do it though....

Cheers

How\'s it going now Adam??? Is the engine back in the car yet?

I have finally got all the bits for Faheems engine; built all the rotors up yesterday. Was a pain in the arse to grind all the side seals to size and tolerance, it felt like it took forever:rolleyes: Anyway everything is now ready to be assembled tonight:)

Did you have any problems with the apex seal end pieces popping off when you installed the apex seal springs?? I know rotary aviation say that there ones are slightly longer so this shouldn\'t happen, but have read a few stories about them popping off into the water jackets of the housing, which can\'t be fun to fish out

Just need to know whether i should be ready to catch them popping off or not, some peeps on the US rx7club forum have used super glue in the past to hold the seals together during assembly.

Cheers, Paul:)

Hello mate....

Well, the engine is all back together and should be going back in next weekend.....waiting for my intercooler from japan.....plus having trouble reading the bloody Turbo kit instructions.... :(

As for the tips, just take your time, they do come off but if yout careful you should be ok....  use plenty of petroleum jelly :)  i would\'nt use super clue though....

Cheers

CHeers for that Adam.

The block is all together now and we get 6 pops/chuffs for every 1080 degree rotation of the eccentric shaft:D Just need to measure the end play properly, which looks ok at the mo and we\'ll then start to put all the rubbish back on to it. Not looking forward to putting back the rats nest from hell:rolleyes: :( think you\'re lucky going single m8 :)

Awesome thread guys!

The RX I\'m looking at has done exactly 60,000 miles and as its an import noone knows if its been rebuilt at all

I too would rebuild the engine myself if it blows, can\'t think of anything more rewarding!

Ad/Paul - how much mechanical knowledge did you have before doing this job?

Thanks!!

Dave

Never built a rotoary engine before....  i have worked on several cars in the past, built cobra\'s and westfields but i wouldn\'t say i was an expert....far from it.  I had the video and without it i wouldn\'t of known where to start....  Well worth it in the end though....hopefully should be turning the key this weekend.....lets hope it don\'t blow  :rollin

Nice pics. I built re-built my TII engine after I bust a tip a couple of years ago with no problems. I now have a FD which I bought with a blown engine with the intention of rebuilding, but when I stripped it every plate was bent with overheating blueing. I bought a used core and had Pip re-build it and port it at the same time so now its run in, its around 330hp (with apexi PFC) and is quicker than my mates 4.5 Cerbera!, and there\'s more to come....

Takes lots of time and self control to run in properly, but its worth the wait.

Finally got the engine put back in my mates FD this evening:cool. Now all it needs are the fluids filling up, intercooler pipes connecting up and the pulley belts tensioning, then she\'ll be ready to fire up:bandit Just hope it doesn\'t go up up in smoke:eek:  :(

Regards, Paul:)
