Title: Failed MOT - need brake lines - 86-88 fit?
Post by: m1tch on March 17, 2011, 05:46:33 PM
Hi everyone, my 7 just failed on some welding and the other brake line has failed, I have already replaced the brake line one 1 side last year for £120, can\'t afford doing it again.

Need a set of brake lines, have found some goodrich brake lines 86-88, mines a 91 but its still an FC, will the series 4 lines fit my car?

NEED to get this sorted ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just checked with Goodrich, they don\'t do a 89-91 kit, so that kit shown MUST fit the series 5, there is a set for the FD and a set for the FC. Will get the 86-88 lines as I know FCs run Goodrich and those are the only FC ones they sell.

Your life isn\'t worth attempting a DIY job unless you know what you\'re doing.

Can\'t remember now, had 1 of the fronts replaced last year, now the other 1 is now apparently bulging after about 500 miles *sigh* I knew I should have got a full kit last year :(

Don\'t beat yourself up over a \'should\' Mitch, doesn\'t matter how much you kick yourself it won\'t change the fact you didn\'t, so just don\'t beat yourself up over it, it\'s an easy mistake to make, people rarely replace all of something if only 1 bit is not going well.

Its the 3rd year its failed on rust, don\'t think there is any car left thats original anymore, might get a secondary floor pan fitted which should offer more protection, will be part way between an coupe and a triple skin cab and might offer a stiffer chassis

To be fair, I\'d have had to hurt you if yours had passed with flying colours, so it\'s safer this way! :D

Once you have the dough, pay a really good workshop to refurb the floor, the get it treated :)

Its had the front sills and the rear sills done as well as the jacking points reinforced, so I have no clue where its rusted now :( I also waxoled it as soon as everything was done to stop any further issues!

How much do you think an extra floorpan will cost?

NO! Im not reshelling, cost too much and I am keeping it original, the car and interior are staying together, the shell is actually a very good coupe shell, its not like grinders that had no floor!

Carbon fibre stays on the car if you poke it though!

fair play. The way i see it is that you could pile money into a rusted shell, which will probably only get worse unless you\'ve got deep pockets (or a welder). Or get a clean shell, swap over the bits you want and flog the rest. End up with a cleaner car, and you may even make a profit!

Not Reshelling, its bad enough having an engine in the garage let alone another shell!

James - THERE ARE NO CLEAN SHELLS imo, only slightly better ones!

Well, if it needs welding, surely they told you WHERE Mitch? As I do any work myself, if an MOT place said something was wrong I\'d want ALL the details I could get. It\'s worth it.
