Title: Rotary engines in other manufacturers gearbox
Post by: re japi on March 17, 2011, 05:23:01 AM
I can see that rotary engines are swapped to many different cars. So i want to make little list about gearboxes that you are using. Pros and cons and so on... Any info would be great. :)

Example: my friends rallycros car has Volvo heavyduty gearbox. We really dont know how it is going to work with rotary engine. So, he is considering Toyota Corolla GT gearbox.

Thanks. :)

just gearbox or axle too?

loads use Toyota Supra boxes, more conversions go for EGI or series 1-3 boxes. My bug uses a built beetle box and the little mazda uses a series 3 box with shortened shifter housing and MG rear axle.

Supra? Interesting... Anyone here use BMW Getrag? I know that few rallycros cars in Norway uses those.

Does TII box fit to s3?

His axle is custom built.

Renault Master? I´m dont know that model... :)

Btw, does anyone know the manufacturer of Mazda gearboxes? Cause i have a feeling that TII gearbox and Ford Sierra Cosworth is the same. (Borg Wagner T5)
Just a feeling, i could be wrong...? :)

Good enough to survive the abuse a safari race car gives it over jumps and rough terrain, nice wide gears and a big 9" diff.
Gearsets are available from albins in Oz as they use a lot in their stadium buggies, but we\'ve got Gripper over here looking at making some gears for us too, he\'s just done us a plate diff too.

nothing like a t5,, however it is used in the US on some V6 bronchos in the mid 90\'s and is known as the toyo kogyo box

another variation is used on the later than 87 bravo series and also in later E vans
it will have a further forward shifter position and a piston bell housing,, both of which can be swapped around to give a turbo R box with very low 1st gear

here is aus toploader and a couple of the supra and celica boxes are often used in various cars ,,( as is the kombi transaxle with kennedy adapter )
usually the place to ring in aus for the special bits is known as Dellow

I have thought about this many times. Getting an old single  seater and well you know the rest. But the westy is already faster than the driver so I fear that a single seater would be suicidle

It would be yes - there\'s a couple of GT40-reps out there putting 600 horsepower through even it\'s smaller UN1 variant (from the renault 21 turbo, etc) on slicks. But you\'d want a ratio change as 1st would be far too low with the little tyres on those.
Even we never use 1st gear with 30" diameter tyres, just drop the clutch in second at the minute. (260+ horsies and 900kg with fluids and driver/co-driver onboard, so you\'d probably end up doing the same on a standard \'box with a ~400/500kg car on slicks)

However, you have to bear in mind they\'re old \'boxes now and they\'ve all had some syncro abuse by \'white van man\', not a problem if you switch to dogs though.
The other problem is I would think it\'d probably be a bit too heavy for a competitive hillclimb machine unless it was pushing silly power and needed the strength without paying out for a top end sequential unit.

Ok... Thanks for the info, again. :)

My friend is still thinking his options. Not sure what gearbox to use. His Volvo heavyduty gearbox is good, its basicly impossible to break. Unfortunatly its soooo heavy lump... :)

if that\'s from me, look around you and what\'s most common gearbox out there and use it.
eg, in Uk, common gearbox was Ford Type9 , buy a quaife gearset etccc for it.
Volvo box will be the best opinion for you,  is that\'s matter for a wee kg more.
if the winner car got heavy box, there you go and buy the same as winner car.

cheers,
Got a bike engined single seater, GSXR-1100WT 180HP, it\'s quite quick and the problem with it is  " Piston engine".( love rotary more than piston)
13B engine was easily installed in the back into the engine bay with hexland gearbox.
you\'re right about the weight, my SS\'s weight\'s approx 320-350Kg and that\'s light.
friend\'s SS  weighted  206kg( same engine as mine\'s a 1100WT) with carbon tub body.
I\'m going back to US soon and visited friends who got a star mazda race car and will have a lookey..

Hmm, not sure about that first link, I would have said the UN5 was a damned sight stronger than the UN1 is, even though they\'re based off the same architecture.

It was just something I found when I was looking at building a MNR LMP kit car.

Ya, there is that problem. Most common gearboxes here wont take that kind of beating or dont have enough gear ration options. :)

That Volvo box is amazing. But in next season my friends car is(hopefully) with rotary engine. And moving/shaving weight is must important thing. At the moment he is racing with Opel 2.0 L 16 valve engine, so when he swamps rotary in, weight should drop about 30-40 kg. And that weight has to be moved so cars balance will be in optimum.

He races with Lada 2107 against Toyota MR2´s. So no gearbox match there. :) MR2`2 are most common and "car to beat" in rallycross here.

Btw, today was the first race of the season. And only thing that hasnt been changed from last season, breaked... :( In practise... MSD ignition box... Bad luck, but thats racing...

can you give the detail of Volvo gear ratio number please.
e.g First Gear 3.??, second gear, 2.?? third 2.??, so on

Just made a steel adaptor plate, mated the counterweight from an auto to the back of a 200mm forged chromoly flywheel (aircooled vw) + clutch setup (already had those), and pressed in the right spigot bearing, on the UN5 it pretty much lines up with a ~20mm spacer in between the engine/bellhousing.

Cheers for the info . I\'m going to dig the gearbox out this weekend and  take a look so will get back to you most likely . :)
