Title: 1974 Mazda RX4 Coupe
Post by: SSScoupe on March 11, 2011, 06:05:26 AM
Hi Folks,

After buying a nice 87 RX7 Fc in the uk last year and getting the Rotary bug, i ve recently moved to oz and decided to hunt down an RX3 or Rx4 project...

After realising that RX3\' s in oz are at a huge premium and cars and parts are ridculously expensive, i ve been on the trail for and RX4 coupe and recenlt found one locally which was once a show car with a 13b turbo, but engine has been removed, paint stripped and currently fitted with an unfinished 12a Bridgeported motor, 5 sp RX7 box and LSD.  Car is the most solid i ve ever come across for an 37 old jap car but engine is incomplete so i ve yet to discover if the freshly built motor is any good!

i pick it up tomorrow so long as sale doesn\'t fall through... can\'t wait!

I am going to some help though!  Not having owned  a 12a rotor before i need to know if any 13b and 12a parts are compatible? 12 a is from a series 1 rx7 i believe.

I am missing at present:

Dizzy
Starter
Airfilter and housing
Half of wiring loom
Exhaust from exstractors back
Windscreen wipers and frames
wingmirrors
rear window winders
rad hoses
rubber surround for boot

Car also needs interior re triming and paint.

Going to be in Perth, WA for next couple of years studying, so have brought this as side project to take my mind off all the work im getting from College!

Car is very straight and solid with just usual rust in boot area and some in the inner wings... nothing major really.  To be honest not having a boot floor in a present should useful for access when working anyway! I won\'t be welding that till last i doubt!

First job, getting the door open on drivers side and handle working correctly! A glass out job i think! :Grrr

Not on perth rotary, but cheers for the info and tip guys, i ll take a look!  I think there is a crack by the passenger door pillar..!!! Let me go have a look and i ll take a pic... if it is one of your old one\'s bumpstart, any info and history would be appreciated!  Was originally yellow from factory, then at some point a metalic green, now a primer white!

Bumpstart: a couple of pics of the small crack you mention... look familiar>??  Although re reading your post, thats not between the hinges is it doh! More floor pan and passenger pillar !!  Just looked at passenger door by hinges but can\'t see any repair...

Just a small paint bubble...?  There is however a small weld on the other side of that shot?

the crack repair  in the door pillar in the last pic is in the right spot but the colours you list are not quite as i remember them

if its the car i originally suspected then it will be LA23S and the original colour is white,, though may have yellow then black in the boot only

if it s that car the undercolour will be white and whatever colour is on the white will have happened after it passed on through me circa 1998

however just by the description of the colours,,
if they are the outside shell colours
then almost certainly the car used to come through me for fix up now and then
( though i dont recall it having the common pillar crack at the time )
and was owned during the middle 90\'s by a bloke called deryck or dex as he is known till around 1996/7 is when he sold it
it was a wishy washy emerald green
dex now owns a home build 318 BMW with 13bt

when i last saw that rx4 it had a rare TQX 5 spd conversion which puts the shifter on a lean
( the strange TQX gearbox was intended for a tiny clutch behind a fluid flywheel and has a park position )
the car also had an old school 13b at last time i saw it

Interesting deffo sounds like one of yours!  Interior is stripped and appears originally yellow, and the emerald green apparent on the fuel cap and on inside of were wipers are!  My understanding is that is was sold a while back in emerald green with a 13b in it, paint started to bubble, owner tried to sort but messed it up and ended up primering the car.  Then lost interest, sold the engine and box.  Chap i got it from brought shell, added fresh 12a rx7 bridgy, 5 speed and LSD but i don\'t think he had enough time, knowhow or cash to finish off!  Everything is only half bolted on like someone screwed the bare minimum together to make it saleable!!

And so the project commences! lol!

good to see that stuff went your way,, looks like you needed it

BTW ,, although they can swap about ,, in aus and most markets rx4 coupe indicators go on the inside
( the plug connections are common and each light just pics out its own pins in the socket )

in some markets there is a taillight pair that is indicator top and brake bottom halves
( some people will cut open reg-glue the stock lights to match and re-organise the pin socket )

Thanks for the comments guys, was very surprised to pick up the parts i got.  Was just expecting badges and an exhaust and came away with so much more that i needed!  In fact i didn\'t even realise i needed some of it as the car was incomplete when i got it!

Bumpstart, thanks for the note on the rear lights.  All of them have twin bulbs in and i was wondering why that was.  I will re arrange them!

Jon just saw that you are in Reigate, oddly enough i nearly purchased a 77\' 929 coupe from a chap in Reigate in 2003, i think the car ended up in ireland in the end but the owner also had 2 mazda cosmos ( the 60\'s ones!!!) and a dozen RO80\'s! Really nice chap, Phil i think his name was.  Only wish i could have afforded the coupe back then, but i got one in end i guess :-)

need a dizzy cap, leads, airfilter, wireing loom for drivers side of engine bay to headlamps from bulkhead plugs, wipers, starter motor, various pipe work for rad, rear muffler, pair of hotwire wheels.... the list goes on lol!  Not to far from you bumpstart ( nr Armadale)

starter is probably my biggest issue as im unsure which engine series i have is whether i need a a 9 tooth or a 11 tooth starter!
Title: 1974 Mazda RX4 Coupe
Post by: bumpstart on April 29, 2011, 03:26:40 PM
that 9 and 11 tooth starter thing is BS
all the rx4/5 and s1,2,and s3 ( and s4 and s5 NA ) manuals run the same ring gear
( on flywheels to suit 215mm and 225mm clutches )

the only time i see it come up in dispute is in some BS phils rotors ebay link
-always good for a laugh-

i have posted pics some-wheres before with all the rx4/5 and s1/2/3 starters side by side and the differences and what interchanges where

( rx4 wide body low starter will not fit against the M series boxes , vichy versa is fine )

i have fitted both 9 and 11 tooth burs to the same flywheels and they both work
i have even made hybrid starters using auto and manual parts

the only thing you should concern you is that rx4 wide body starter will not fit the s1,2,3 boxes,, neither will a turbo FC starter motor
( which is 11 teeth and a different pattern head for the bigger ring gear in turbo FC onwards  )

if you have a turbo gearbox ,, then you need the turbo starter ( n318 ) or the NA auto starer ( n327 ) which also fits same ring gear and also has the same bolt up pattern as the manual turbo
(* n327 is longer case and a higher tq alternative to the n318 )

anyhows,, have most of them here if you wish to double check
( most suit rebuild, and a few are not for sale )

i also have the bluey airfilters and many carbs and electric dizzies with no caps or leads  ( and a few points dizzies )

so if you are uber stuck for any of these you can tinkle me a PM on ausrotary
( PM\'s may be disabled here )

Thats really useful info. cheers. I believe my engine is a series 2 RX7 12a unit with 5 speed fitted but not sure.  If the 9 tooth/11 tooth thing isn\'t an issue i may just grab a 9 tooth which seems to be most common and try my luck!

Thanks for the offer of help with parts too.  May well take you up on some of those in future. ;)

had someone come through here the other day with a pressure plate issue on a 13b s4 engine
-- some nong ( in perth ) had fitted a s1 rx7 12a flywheel to it previously

couldnt quite work out what was going on with the pressure plate
( it was a correct 8.5 incher for that flywheel and had excessive pedal effort )

but i was not happy about the engine miss-balance so i supplied him with a N326 flywheel and advised he purchase a 9.0 inch pressure plate to suit

problem solved for the clutch effort,, problem solved for the engine balance,, problem solved with the issue of which s4 flywheel suits an s1 rx7 M type box

and the reason for the long story
-- his s1 9 tooth starter,, which works well with the 8.5 s1 flywheel,,, also works just as well with a n326 flywheel
( which by accounts is supposed to be 11 tooth starter for an M type gearbox )

as i have been trying to point out ,,, they both work on the same ring gear !

Thanks Steve, slow progress ( my projects usually are lol!) but progress never the less!  Should have some wipers and a wireing loom arriving early next week, plus a new floor carpet so that may give me an incentive to start piecing the interior back together!

Not much to report, except i now have correct wipers, battery tray and a wiring loom for the right hand side of the engine bay!

Still can\'t get over how many small bits are missing from this car!  Today i discovered whilst mounting the wiring loom that the throttle peddle has no connection to anything... at what point did the previous owner decide to remove something like that :2Confused

Couple of minor updates..

I have carpet :)  A nice brand new grey through out... just need to cut the gearstick and handbrake holes!

Also been on the hunt for decent leads/coil/ and dizzy cap.  NGK leads on order, Rotor arm on order and was surprised to find that at least two motor stores had the Bosch coil on the shelf!  Just need to get a dizzy cap now!

for accel cable , you can use them from s1-s5 rx7 ,, depending on your motor/ carb choice
ie,, if turbo get a s4/5 turbo cable,, if NA EFI,, the 6p cable,, if nikki carbed,,, the s1/2/3 cable

the plug at the firewall is different,, the rx7 ones are square sided with push through tabs
the rx4 one has a flat flange with two mounting screws
you need to take a small file to the round rx4 hole and square it up to fit the push through rx7 cable fitting

easy as

Found a throttle cable in the shed hiding amongst some lamps which was bonus :)

Bit of a frustrating day trying to trace wiring :(

Coils are in, with new leads and dizzy cap which is a start but having not had to go through wiring looms before it seems a bit of a nightmare!

Been fairly busy on the hunt for more parts... decided my knackered old rx4 seats with covers weren\'t going to cut it so invested in some decent pews amongst other items!

(http://inlinethumb20.webshots.com/48659/2256043510103320357S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2256043510103320357RGCCrY)

Genuine mazda boot lock... at last i have a car that i can actually lock up and not open with a screwdriver!

"018"

Probably doubled the metal thickness in the boot plating the lock with this!

Picked up 4 of these tonight too, mainly for the pair of decent yokos on some of them but they are in pretty good nick, so we\'ll see what happens with them :)

Also managed to get a full set of wheel bolts, a new straight rear bumper and a set of genuine rx4 inertia seat belts, screen wash bottle and the remainder of the internal door wires we were missing for correct operation!

Picked up a spare fuel lid too... will probably try out some designs for the lid but am thinking maybe a japanese flag...

Been part hunting again and got a few more bits and pieces... including a Weber i ve been after...

What a bugger they were too fit!
(http://inlinethumb11.webshots.com/49482/2542635950103320357S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2542635950103320357ZJENUM)
One side took 20 mins to fit, the other side took over and hour and a half!  The larger surface area of the pad combined with 40 year old chatter clips in the caliper meant there just simply wasn\'t enough room!  Patience and a large file saved the day though and the brakes work perfectly now!

Been checking what manifold i need for the weber... its a 45DCOE which i chose over an IDA mainly for two reasons, one its a third of the price of most IDA\'s and two the research i d did suggested it would give better lower down torque and streetabillity.  Im not after an out an out racer so this seemed a good compromise.

Old one off... shows six ports

Gasket only has four ports though... and appears like the other two ports on the block have been sealed?   ???

Tidyed up the under side of the front too and replaced the steering arm bushes with polyurethene items i found in the shed!

QuoteOld one off... shows six ports
nah,,its a normal 4 port
the two that are blanked are coolant to manifold crossovers ,, water only ,, and its good that they are blocked
here in WA you wont see freezing conditions and there is little need for them,, and the O ring is prone to fail,, and is an extreme PITA to fix,, particularly on turbo engines

Decided i d had enough of my old grill which some previous owner had chopped about...
(http://inlinethumb25.webshots.com/47832/2352784040103320357S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2352784040103320357IkMDFX)

So when an uncracked complete grill came up for $50 with a free spare front bumper i jumped at it!

(http://inlinethumb44.webshots.com/48043/2678260710103320357S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2678260710103320357AjEVsU)

Just needs a good clean up and some fresh paint!

Got a choice of red or blue grill emblems now too :)

Decided a working clutch might be useful, and on discovering the master and slave both ceased it was time for some new parts!!  All fitted and bled within an hour... easiest job so far i think!

Then this morning a nice parcel from Rotaryshack California arrived.....  :) :) :)

Very happy with my polished 12A manifold for a Weber 45!  Came with gaskets, carb bolts and some cool free stickers too!!

I hope so :)  Just working out my jet sizing now... I ve been recommended by Rotary Shack to use the following:

65f9 idle jets
225 main fuel jet
185 air bleed
f11 emulsion tubes
0 bypass acell pump jet
38 or 40mm venturies

This is based on a 45 Dcoe attached to a 12a bridgy...

Didn\'t even know if this fuel pump was for my car as it didn\'t come fitted and couldn\'t find a place on the underside where it should mount in this housing so....

Decided a decent replacement was the way forward!

And just in case its noisy, a stubbie cooler fits around it nicely ;)

Its a Carter P4070.  Not sure what you mean by the gold or Black?  I was quoted anything up to $600 aud for this... which is a total rip off!  So good old Australian Ebay had this for $106 plus shipping!  Thats where i got mine from!

Cheapest place i found however was here

I just didnt want to wait for delivery from the USA!

Today has been a good day :) I now have headlamps, rear lamps, indicators ( albeit no flashing as flasher unit isnt wired!), starter now turns the engine on the key and the temp gauge and other parts of the dash light up.... feels like giant steps towards starting the car have been made today!

Finally managed to get a spark at the plugs, which means that once the exhaust has been completed, and oil and coolant has been put in, i might actually get to start the engine!!

In the mean time attention has been turned to finishing some other bits and pieces.... so i ve ordered a two inch lowering kit for the rear from http://www.dellowconversions.com.au and ordered a new headlining from Goliners http://motors.shop.ebay.com/goliners/m.html to replace the custom one which was falling apart!

Will put some pics up when they decide they want to upload....

After offering up the front section and adding exhaust studs, we found the extractors were out on on one stud hole :(  Probably for a 13B engine i guess.... still out with the grinder....

So thats that chopped off.... needs to be rewelded about 20mm inwards to fit properly!
Another job to do along side getting the resonator welded to its flanges at the right angle!

In the meantime the head lining came out...

Well  my new headlining has arrived from Goliners in Texas...

It does look a bit bigger than the old one though!  I m assured by Jim at Goliners that this is the correct one custom made for my RX4 2 door Coupe so we shall see what fun we have fitting the beasty in!

I ve been head scratching about my crossmember for a while.... and after removing it on the weekend i now know why....

(http://inlinethumb33.webshots.com/41952/2883487260103320357S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2883487260103320357JRCcIG)

The red one is the painted replacement and the white one is what i removed.  They are both stamped with 1029 which im reliably informed ( http://www.perthrotary.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=5014 ) means they are genuine RX4 13B crossmembers.  Now from the discussion on the Perth Rotary thread i understood that the engine should be offset due to the mounting bracket from the engine to the crossmember... but was always puzzled by why the offset was so large...

The above pics show the crossmember had the left side cut by about 50mm and welded to the otherside!  Coupled with the engine mount bracket this makes the offset pretty big!

Any ideas why some one would do that?  They welding is really good and they have made a half decent job of it but ive no idea why!  Only thing i can think of is the car is said to have had a 13B turbo motor in it at some point and maybe all the turbo and ancillaries needed extra space on the drivers side??

Any ideas welcome :)

No suggestions on the odd crossmember then...

Fair bit of progress made this week as my exhaust after much chopping, fiddling and welding is complete.  My brother tack welded some extra pipe to the resonator, my dad angle ground it down to the right size and a friend who\'s a coded welder weldeded the flanges on at the correct angles to fit.  After some heat proof paint it completed the system at long last!

Whilst the cross member was out it seemed a good idea to replace the sway bar bushes too...

Thanks... im getting there at last!  No engine crossmember was modded in such a way that it was way off! The offset should be on the bracket on the engine to the crossmember, not the member its self.  The two together put the engine far to far on one side... easy to remove extractors but its meant the gearbox mount is in the wrong place and a previous owner has bodged it not realising the crossmember was the problem! Never mind, fixed now :)  So this weekend engine was timed up... in the process I  found a a lightened fly wheel.... bonus :)

Anyway, After various goes at cranking with a 270cca battery ( too small), various goes with a 470cca battery and still no luck, a tow start was required.....

First attempt was not captured on film but needless to say it fired.... the throttle jammed, a coolant pipe to the heater box blew clean off and coolant went all over the new carpet in the passenger footwell... fun times!  Had another shot and my bro recorded it below

http://good-times.webshots.com/video/3046473630103320357gmRDAc

Sounds like a hoard of angry bees trying to get out.... can\'t wait to release them!  Got a few looks from the neighbours as we towed round the block trying to start! Made a couple of adjustments to the wiring and brought a new set of plugs ready for another shot next weekend  ;D

No pictures to update, but had Bumpstart ( a rotary guru from Ozrotary and many other sites) over to look over the car on Saturday.  He locked my dizzy to restrict the 15 degree of movement to about 5-7 degrees to help with the car\'s timing curve.  This was so that when running it helps resolve the common problem of leaning out when driven hard in 3rd or 4th gear.

To go with that, i ve been recommended to make some further changes to my fuelling system to switch from the current deadhead setup ( single line from pump to carb) to a return line set up via a pressure regulator.  The pump has one of the these built in but as i understand it this will assist with flow under full load, and distribute pressure that would otherwise be feeding back to the pump and restricting the pumps ability.

Approx half a wiring loom was removed from under the bonnet where it won\'t be required and the with some extra relay\'s added the car no longer suffers from voltage drop across the coils when cranking.  After routing through the shed, i found a set of RX7 FC coils when can be adapted for use and should give a much fatter spark than the bosch coils.  That\'s the next upgrade!

Bumpstart also pointed out that i have a dead wasp and eggs blocking the inlet to the fuel tank ....oops!  Apparently this is pretty common!  So this has to be sorted!  Because of the upgrades to the fuel system, i m going to change the fuel inlet to a 1/2" one cutting out the old one with the wasp nest in!  This has be done professionally, so i ve been recommmended to talk to Rotomotion, a local rotor specialist who have done this work to tanks before.

All this plus a few chrome trim pieces coming from a very helpful guy in Canberra, should see the car almost ready for the road!  All that will be left then will be to sort the speedo cable and a few other wiring niggles, add the roof liner and central roof console and try and set the engine idle up.  I ve been advised it will be a fast idle for first 500+ kms (1500-1800 rpm) and then with the right carb jetting and engine bedding in a 1200-1250 idle should be possible!

TBH ive never had that issue, but Bumpstart assured me it was very common!!  Just glad it was dead!  I hate wasps!

Tank is out as of this pm and i ve been quoted $160 by Rotomotion to have it filled with Co2 or water, wasp filled line cut out and a 1/2" intake welded back in... so that will be happening this week hopefully!:)

Still waiting for my modded fuel tank to come back from Rotomotion, in the mean time I ve tracked down some more parts i was missing including a OEM wiring loom for the roof centre console, the front wing pieces for the lower chrome side skirt trims, a better throttle peddle and some original wire looms for the front wing indicators!

After a bit of head scratching and going through the parts in the shed, I came across some RX7 FC coils, crank angle sensor and a few other bits.   After reading this http://www.ausrotary.com/viewtopic.php?t=96724 it became apparent that a Direct Fire Ignition system was possible using my exist shed parts.... only problem was I whilst i understood the thread, I wasn\'t exactly sure where to begin!

So after a few messages to Bumpstart, a big contributor to the DFI thread above, he came over to mine and set me up the DFI system.  This should allow my car to run a spark almost twice as fat as the original ( Rotary\'s like this :) ) and combined with the locked dizzy and a few other tweeks, should help keep the car running right a high rpm!

(http://inlinethumb01.webshots.com/50688/2155234240103320357S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2155234240103320357Fvgamo)

Not finished yet but it does produce a damn good spark!

such flattering pics of the wiring dogs breakfast
.. i assure everyone its temporary pending a spending spree on some connectors and some new wire and a bit more time
just doing what needs to be done atm twitching old stuff together to get it mobile pending a real clean up
meanwhile hopefully things will clean up a little bit under some clip on conduits

.. time and previous owners havent been kind to the loom on this side and i have to do a quick replication of the various ignition and cranking and fan relays
.. along with the external reg and rats nest harness delete

dizzy has been partially locked.. its mech curve has been roughly halved and allows aggressive setting of the base timing suit the half BP
unfortunately no spare dead modules where avail to junction box the connections
and so instead we have remote mounted all three j109s closer to the coils ala s1 dizzy style
two ex FC trailing coils are now individually direct to the leading plugs and a HEC715 bosch coil drives the trailing through the original cap and button for correct phasing

fuel tank is modded for 1/2 inch pickup ( predictably old was blocked with wasps )
and pending some 1/2 inch or -8 fuel line and setting up a real bypass fuel system , its nearly ready to get serious about making it run properly

You can see the sealer in this one and it works like a dream.

Got the car started off a tow again, and this time Bumpstart got to drive it around the block.  Even with the carb being incorrectly jetted and set up, the car pulls pretty hard and revs sweetly.... i\'m getting excited now as i can\'t wait for the test runs to begin!

But for now....

Carb is back off to take to the carby specialist for correct jetting.  They should be here next week.  I ve ordered some decent NGK plugs for good measure from the local bike shop.

Bumpstart setting the engine idle.... at 1700rpm :) only a base tune as yet to jet the carb and engine has now done 2kms!! Goes surprisingly well though considering!  Should be pretty quick once the run in has begun and the jets and tubes swapped for best performance!

The video above came after... :)

still idling with a little bit of the progression circuit exposed so methinks you will be up for the f9/70 idle jet ..
but the ignition sounds crisp all the way though and it goes well up top despite current jetting that is maybe a little on the lean side
 ( methinks its is currently f11, 190 fuel. 180 air on 40 choke )

give it some run time and then we shall try new air and fuel jet combos that are a bit more realistic for the engine , possibly a play with the Etube set as well
,.. its suck see and black magic from here

Managed to get out on the road today for 50km... had to do a few tweeks first...

2 stroke bike plugs and some tuning jets ( for another day)

Interior all put back together, plus a cool old school SAAS wheel to match my SAAS gear knob!

Quick headlamp swap as full beam wasn;t working!

Tweek of the brakes...

draining the fuel pump to add a new fitting, I grabbed the first pot to hand... school boy error as the petrol are straight through it! Doh!

Still pump works well with new fitting!  No leaks which is the main thing and its now lower in the boot to help with head pressure to the carb.

Xworks filters socks on...

And all cleaned up for the first proper run!

I managed to use 20 liters of fuel in 50kms... running a bit rich I think!!

Fitted my ebaytastic rev counter... shift light works nicely although rev counter is about 500rpm slow I think!  Wanted to get some kms on the clock to bed the seals in and be able to to start the car on the button, but an oil leak as stopped this for a week or two....

Hairline fracture in the RX7 oil cooler was the cause... shame as the cooler was in good condition, these are usually pretty battered.

Had another series 4 cooler in my spares, but the oil feeds I had didn\'t fit....

So I brought a 8 bar RX4 oil cooler from bumpstart, cleaned it up and painted it and with some brackets my dad made up for it eventually got it in and working!

Managed to get two runs in the car yesterday totaling about 30kms ... such good fun!

Brought this little gizmo too from the UK, it\'s an electronically controllable exhaust valve

;D  Legal limit here in WA for a car of my age is 96db... mine is 94db so legal but its pretty loud and i decided that for cruising etc, its abit much so im going to fit this butterfly valve after the hotdog in my exhaust system to control the airflow into the 3" pipe over the diff.

Decided thats probably the best place for it as the heat should be a little less that far back.  Hopefully it will keep my neighbours happy at least..... i set off a burglar alarm 3 houses along the other day when revving it in my drive  ::) won\'t be popular if that keeps occuring! ;D

little tip is to now change your oil.. unknown oil coolers can have lots of little nastys inside and its likely your filter is now blocked and in bypass .. also all that flooding with needle seat issues will have thinned your oil already... replace with something relatively cheap that you will be happy to flush out around 1000 kms .. after the that oil change i expect the needle /seat and tune to be settled and then you should expect 5000 kms or more between changes

I ll do that with oil, i ve got plenty of $12 20/50 Valvoline i stocked up on when it was on special at the motor factors!

Hmmm fitted the valve, but not a massive noise difference, just changes the pitch more than the decibels!  Is noticeable when you drive it though as the restriction slows the acceleration right down!  Really proves how sensitive these little rotaries are to free flowing exhaust!

Bit of grinding to fit....

Fits a treat... all wired in and after my first pull by the local law, I think the reduced noise may have helped.

The police here in WA are allowed to issue defect notices for vehicles.... this can be anything inc oil leak, tinted windows too dark, bald tyres, car too low etc etc  They look like this:
Often the stories you hear here are that police are over zealous, pulling people for non existing oil leaks or seatbelts that don\'t retract fast enough .... its due to WA not having an annual vehicle check like the UK, putting the decisions on whether a vehicle is roadworthy or not in to the hands of the untrained.  My brother who is 17 and has a 2.0 16v n/a Nissan Silvia S13, only mod being a non standard back box has been pulled 3 times in last 3 weeks, and was advised he would get a defect notice for his \'noisy\' back box if he didn\'t go and get a shovel to help dig out his mate who had crashed his car into some rocks... its all a bit hit and miss how its done but my experience was very different...

The police woman said she had pulled me over as my car looked \'jerky\' as it came down the road.  I explained that a rotary under 3.5k rpm on a fresh built motor is a bit \'jerky\'.... :)  I left the car running as I couldn\'t turn it off as it won\'t start on the key yet due only having 100kms on it since rebuild!  The police were as nice as pie, checked my UK driving licence ( falling apart as its an old paper one!), checked the vehicle was licenced and let me on my way..... didn\'t even follow me when I pulled off in a cloud of two stroke smoke and scrapped my way over the nearest speed hump...

Hows the valve holding up?

Have you got it ruin in now? :)

Hi Brett not been on in a while... Nor have u done much to the rotary for various reasons, one of which includes buying a V8 ute for a daily drive which is fun :)

Valve is holding up well, although if im totally honest doesn\'t really do much for noise, its more like a power button with my freeflow exhaust!  Power on... Power off... lol

Still not run in really, still on tow starts although i ve done about 400kms now.  I think i ve made a mistake with my headers having fitted 13b ones rather than 12a one... oops!  So im about 10mm out which is enough for big rotor sparks to escape!  I\'m on the plane to UK tonight for a month, unfortunately not in time for rotor stock :( But the coupe will get some love when i return!

Haven\'t really done much on the 4 recently... in fact its been pretty much 8 or 9 months!! Just been turning it over and taking it for the odd run during winter, until the exhaust gasket blew about 4 months ago... and since then it\'s been a weekly engine turnover only :(

However last weekend i got some motivation have another look...
(http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a551/SSScoupe/IMG_0705_zps2e1c4147.jpg) (http://s1283.photobucket.com/user/SSScoupe/media/IMG_0705_zps2e1c4147.jpg.html)

Carb off to access the manifold!

Studs removed!

(http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a551/SSScoupe/IMG_0708_zpsbb0a2dda.jpg) (http://s1283.photobucket.com/user/SSScoupe/media/IMG_0708_zpsbb0a2dda.jpg.html)

The offending gasket!

(http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a551/SSScoupe/IMG_0706_zps0534a77b.jpg) (http://s1283.photobucket.com/user/SSScoupe/media/IMG_0706_zps0534a77b.jpg.html)

Decided to start sound/heat proofing the rear of the car so out with the rear seats!  Not much to the these tin boxes so the insulation has probably doubled the floor thickness :)

(http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a551/SSScoupe/IMG_0709_zps53415b9c.jpg) (http://s1283.photobucket.com/user/SSScoupe/media/IMG_0709_zps53415b9c.jpg.html)

Decided to replace the filter socks while the carb was off with a spare set of X worx ones i had in the shed.  The others had been ruined from petrol over flow when the tests on the carb kept causing flooding! :)

(http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a551/SSScoupe/IMG_0710_zpsb0eb7188.jpg) (http://s1283.photobucket.com/user/SSScoupe/media/IMG_0710_zpsb0eb7188.jpg.html)

And two badges you won\'t see that often on a drive together!  V8 and Rotary ;)

So it was back on the trailer and over to a fabricator for some work...

from this hole in the rear floor...

To this...

Which i'm rather pleased with!

Then i gave the fabricator these because my previous exhaust was stupidly loud before:

Very pleased with the result, just want to be able to start thing to hear if its finally shut up the noise!  But typically it dosent want to fire... no spark on the leading rotor plugs even though all coils are getting power etc and ignitor modules are all powered up too.  I'm wondering if something has come loose wire wise in the electric dizzy.

Anyway i've begin swapping out the front windows too:

these ones have no crappy peeling tint!

Some previous careful owner has 'neatly' cut a speaker hole with a knife and fork i think...

On the plus side, engine bay is finally looking a bit neater!

So the ignition has been returned to a standard set up after it stopped working and i couldn't get to the bottom as to why!  And after 4 years of the stubborn non starting 12 a Bridgeport, i finally spat the dummy when i burnt out another starter motor, so it's been swapped out for a stock 12a for now, so at least i can used the car!

Standard motor running a nikki carb which is currently over fueling so may need the float looking at, or may just swap it back to the 45 DCOE.

Btw, is that original RX-4 Coupe?

Usually I dont like white, but that car really looks good in white.

Clive, was that car originally available in yellow?

Yes but it was a much lighter yellow, we had lots of RX-3's this color as well  :)

Here you here's a picture of a stock yellow one I saved ages ago

Thanks for all the positive comments guys  ;D Mine was that light yellow from the factory, but came to me in a crappy shade of white.  Its been blown over as a tidy up until i can afford a full panel and paint next year, but i'm considering a light blue when it gets done properly.  It does look cool in white though!

On another forum, a poster has come forward with this:
(http://i484.photobucket.com/albums/rr204/Pablo_Dregas/image_zpshvlr7f1v.jpeg) (http://s484.photobucket.com/user/Pablo_Dregas/media/image_zpshvlr7f1v.jpeg.html)

This is my car back in the day, when it ran a 13BT apparently! Underneath the white is a crazed version of this green!  And i got it with the rear wheels shown ( i have one still with same tyres as a spare!) and a trashed grey interior.

Ha ha thats the 7th or 8th time i've heard that, and each time i swap them, i'm told they should be the other way.... seeing as everyone seems to have a different opinion on whats wrong or right they can stay where they are for now :)

Only one person picked the side skirts are back to front... dogleg should be on the rear, but didn't fit on the rear, but did perfectly on the front, so its on the front for now :)

I had some 13b housings with chipped chrome on the edges shaved down to 12a specs, and had the water seal grooves cut in.  Very impressed with the way the came out. Just needed lapping to be finished and the are going to be used in my 12a Bridgeport rebuild.

So begun pulling the troublesome old 12a apart.  Not done this with a rotary before and was surprisingly straight forward.  Soon identified that previous engine builder had bodged this together with poor porting and buggered housings!  Glad my nice 13B/12A hybrid housing will do the job! Just need my new Mazda OEM seal kit to arrive now!

After being pulled down by me, engine was half bridgeported, half street ported and put back to together by Andrew at Ace Rotary who did a great job of painting it too.

That'll be the gilmer pulleys tightened quite a bit aye! :P Here is a picture of the setup I'm about to install if you're unsure what gilmer pulleys are ;)

So the bongo has changed hands since those pics. It was owned by a mate with an R100, an 808 coupe, a series 4 rx2 coupe and beautful fully restored 1300 wagon. Due to a house purchase, the rx2, 1300 and bongo were sold. Bongo is now in the hands of the guy built my motor so its body off for chasis check and comnence floor welding!
