Title: Cruise control problems
Post by: Kamatari on March 07, 2011, 06:24:34 PM
Right so my initial problem started off to be a bulb that had blown but now after coming back to the cruise crontrolthe push button "main" switch doesnt  click in anymore, when you push it, it presses down but instead of remaining pressed to activate the cruise control, it just pops straight back up meaning the only way to keep it active is by holding it down

Has anyone else had this kind of problem and managed to fix it? does anyone know how to take apart the cruise control unit?

Thanks!

sounds daft ,have you checked all of the fuses etc..

it might just be a simple fix , failing that you might need a new cruse switch ?

I\'ve got a spare cruise control cluster that works if you want it?

It could also be the screws that hold the switch in - I had something similar on my light switch for main beam - because the little plastic lugs were broken inside, the switch wasn\'t \'clicking\' into position and so was only momentarily making.  Araldite and a rawl plug are your friends ;)

thanks for the replies

grinder - dont think its fuses as it just to "click in" even when it was disconnected :(

Prof - i\'ve taken the switch apart as best as i can but cant see anything broke off

1990_fc3s_t2 - How much would you want for the switch? :)

There are only 3 things for the cruise control:

Cruise motor
Cruise ECU (by drivers footwell next to fuse box)
Cruise control switch

Thats it, nothing else so its easy to diagnose whats wrong.  For the switch not to engage then something must be telling it not too and this is usually the clutch or brake inputs. (thats saying that everything is working correctly).  Now there is a fault diagnostics built into the cruise ECU and you have to count the number of flashes the switch sends out, the procedure is in the workshop manual.  if you need any of the 3 items then let me know.  Its also worth making sure your throttle cable is not too tight and that the motor can rotate the spindle, it will self prime when you engage, if it does not then you have to adjust it.

Hey there, forgot to write in this thread, got the cruise control switch but the main problem is that its different to my original one and doesnt fit in right :(

but secondly the switch seems to do the exact same thing as mine where you can press the main switch in but it doesnt stay pressed in?

It doesn\'t stay pressed in it just sets the desired speed I think, not used it for a few years. maybe someone who has a car on the road can tell you how it\'s supposed to work cos I can\'t remember! Sorry dude :)

just to make sure, im not on about the button on the side of the stick but the round button next to the \'cruise\' and \'main\' lights :)

yeah thats the one, you push it and im sure a light on the dash lights up to tell you it\'s working, but it shouldn\'t stay pushed in.
I think your problem lies with the mechanism, all i know about it is a cable from the throttle goes into to a black box in the engine bay! sorry i couldn\'t be more help :o

hmm maybe its not meant to then? i know when i first got the car the button would press in and remain pressed unless you did it again, when i changed the bulbs it still did it where when it was pressed it would light up \'main\' and then you would press it again and the button would pop back up and the light would go off

No it shouldn\'t stay pressed in.

You press the little button once and "Main" lights up (and the button pops back out).  Press it again and "Main" goes out (and the button pops out).

interesting! as like i said my cruise control switch use to be press button in and it says half pressed, main lights up, press it again and main turns off, then one day i came back and pressed it and it and main lit up, but as soon as i took my finger off the button it pops back out and main turns off :S

I think it is a latching switch, it should be like this:

Press the little button, it should click and then MAIN should turn on and stay on

The button on the end of the stalk is to set the speed, if you hold this down it will accelerate but not advisable

I think you push the stalk down to coast and then up to resume (if you touch the brake pedal at all it disegages but keeps the set speed, when you press resume it carrys on until that speed it met again)

Word of warning - DO NOT dip the clutch if its on cruise control, the speed will drop and so the unit will increase the throttle until it gets up to speed, if the clutch it dipped then no power goes to the wheels and the unit pulls the throttle more, I did that once, it revved past 7k...lol

Perhaps there are different types.  I went out to the garage and tried mine before I wrote my post above.

It is supposed to do that.  From the drivers handbook:
QuoteTo increase cruising speed
1. Push the SET button and hold it. Vehicle speed will increase at a set rate.
2. Release the button when the desired speed is reached.

Quote from: m1tch;751948Word of warning - DO NOT dip the clutch if its on cruise control
Then it\'s faulty!

QuoteTo cancel cruising speed
- ...
- Slightly depress the brake pedal or clutch pedal
