Title: low oil pressure? please help!
Post by: Spanner Monkey on February 09, 2011, 07:45:43 PM
Hi, ive not long owned my rx7, just over 3 months now and last night i noticed my oil pressure had dropped. It used to idle at around 30- 40 and when driving around 90 but as i was driving it was staying at 50 :(. It still drives fine, no smoke or spluttering, starts first time every time hot or cold and i checked the oil and water, everything seems fine? Please help :Thumbs-up

If this is signs of needing a rebuild then id have to get some extra time in at work to afford the rebuild kit.

thanks in advance.

dont panic

no1 fault is actually the sender,, replace with other or fit aftermarket unit to double check if this is issue
also be sure that the condenser cap associated with the sender electronics  is still bolted to the firewall or top of gearbox ( turbo or NA ) near the oil sender
[ little black 2cm x 1 cm block with wiring coming from the bundle that feeds the oil pressure sender ]

n02 fault is low level

n03 fault is thinned out oil contaminated with petrol

try all these first,, then start to panic

n04 fault is the timing cover O ring passage blowing out the O ring
its common on s4 and earlier cars,, the plates are revised around 1989 to offer a nylon support and wider O ring land to prevent this issue

the motor needs to come out,, and have the timing cover and sump removed while pointing vertically at sky
( the engine,, not the mech )
the reason for this is that the front pulley bolt should never be undone horizontally if you wish to not potentially ruin the torrington bearings with the pinch trap

while there ,, double check the oil pump body bolts ( 4 x 10 mm ) are tight
same for the pickup,, and the trash screen not blocked with silicon

-----

n05 fault is the bearings have extreme wear

goodluck -- always change the sender first to confirm the issue !

^^ thanks dude I shall check all of these tomorrow, hope it\'s just the sender that\'s faulty. If the engine has to come out I guess may aswell rebuild it? I\'ve really wanted to rebuild a rotary and I think if it had to come out that would be the chance? Thanks again for your huge reply :)

if the motor is a good runner and with no other issues
but has to come out to fix the o ring under the timing cover i would fix the issue and put it straight back in
( after checking the clutch has life in it )

its not a hard task,, certainly not as much as a strip down and rebuild that may uncover parts not suitable to re-use again

my advice is stay with that engine till it develops a serious fault

this one is likely to be a very cheap fix,, and maybe at worst a PITA to pull an engine to fix a 50 cent o ring and $20 timing cover gasket
if pulling it,, remember to check the clutch and replace them if they are less than 30%
-- nothing worse than having to drag out the engine again in 3 months time for that
