Title: What ECU?
Post by: sadgoth on June 04, 2004, 10:36:59 AM
Well once the car comes back from RX Motors it should have bridge ported secondaries and street ported primaries (Tim\'s idea! :D ). After my cheque book has recovered, I\'m looking at upgrading the ECU and the turbo.

question:
What ECUs are avail for the FC?

the ones I know of are:
Haltech (no-one sells or maps them in the UK that I could find)
Microtech LT8/LTX8
Apexi PFC (hard to find in UK but can be sourced from Japan)

are there any others and which is going to be the best in terms of reliability, accessibility of specialists to do the mapping and ease of use?

Turbo is another question but I\'m thinking of going down the Garrett GT series route (either GT35/45 or poss bigger)

any advice would be appreciated

cheers

Mark :wave

Do u want to tune it yourself Mark? Got an LTX12 hooked up to the FC at the mo and in spite being a retard the laptop s/ware seems very easy to use and navigate and adjust. Geff says its a lot nicer to tune on the MT than on the apexi when u start making a bit of power, thats just his opinion tho.

Not many haltechs about no, altho there is a dealer/distributor in the UK. The newer software looks nice and the manual is very clear and concise - and the haltechs are very widely used computers. Martin Sintler is the only guy in the UK running Haltech (E6K) on his GT35R\'d FD. I think a couple of the northern lads may have tinkered too.

If u arent gonna tune it yourself, ask who you are going to get to tune it what their preference is and go with that?

hmm, tuning it myself? Not sure I\'d trust myself to do a Max, caning down the road one hand on the wheel one on the laptop! Undecided about that! Why the LTX12 - u aren\'t going 20b in the FC as well are you? Although after having seen Pip\'s creation.....

13B shit itself 2 wks ago today. So we put (gaffed :)) one of the 20B\'s in it so I have transport. Its a lash up (I think we spent about 3 or 4 days in total, including taking out and stripping the 13B and doing the same with the 20B) but has held up thus far. Needs intercooling, a single turbo and some serious oil and water cooling. Oh and tuning as its on the base map :) Just didnt have time before RS, I drove it home from the workshop at midnight last saturday, then drove it to RS, ran to 1/4\'s (very badly!) and then drove it back. More than I expected!

The car needs work as well tho e.g. shocks/springs/bushes all round...

When the 1/2 bridge gonna b finished then mate? r u gonna do the tubby swap before u put it all back together? The GT35R seems popular, have u been in Max\'s car? might give u some idea as to what that tubby can do...

damn, wish I just had a stock of 20Bs lying around!:rollin ! Engine will be ready soon (can\'t be more specific as Tim has a workshop full of cars in line for work - mine is moving up the queue!) Would tike to to the tubby at the same time but can\'t justify it to the managment, also I\'m trying to get me dad to bring me one from the US when he comes over for my wedding in September. On the Garrett site they are coming in at about $600 - $800! If he can get one in his suitcase I\'ll save myself a packet! :bandit

Mark,
Hi, you will have to have some sort of ecu change before you start running the half bridge. She will proberbly idle...ish..., but your overlap will be quite something and you will need a way of adjusting fueling.
The Microtech is so user friendly... though there arn´t any shared maps anywhere, unlike the apexi and haltech.

Isnt the Rebic just an additional injector controller or some thing?

Gimme a \'sweet\' R100 over the lot any day :D

Seriously we are building an FC, but this car will purely be for drag racing. If the FC is good enough for KSP its good enough for me.

The FC is good enough for more than KSP mate!

Interesting choice for drag racing tho?

I was merely pointing out the fact that \'other\' tuners also like the FC e.g. Amemiya, R-Magic ;)

Rich,
Got home fine, damn long trip though. Left SCR at about 1900ish, and arrived home at about 1130 the next morning.

Ross, Many thanks for the tubing you got for me. Just a pity that when i finally got away to speak with you, you had left. Drop me a PM.

I was led to believe that she would run ok on the standard ECU as long as I didn\'t push it, my plan was to sort out the ECU while I\'m running in as I wouldn\'t be pushing the engine for the first 3k (in my case 3-4 months :( or so). I\'m expecting the idle to be a little odd!

Anyway, thanks everyone, has kind of backed up my thoughts, Mircotech appears to be the best option! with current exchange rates they are £411 (+ shipping from Aus and taxes) so I reckon landed about £500 - £550! Next, I\'ll be needing advice on fitting it!!! I may get Tim to do that, never been a great fan of wiring diagrams!
