Title: hello everyone im thinking of changing to an rx7 and joining proper
Post by: monkfish on January 20, 2011, 01:14:54 AM
hi

my names nik and im from the suffolk area and i have been into jap cars for a while having owned 2 mk1 mr2s an fto gpx ,  2 r33 gts-t skylines and my current r34 gt-t skyline.

the rx7  fd has a great look to it and there seems to be a lot of tuning options  about.  im thinking of swapping my stage 1 auto r34 gt-t for one as i fancy a change after 3 years of ownership. I Just wandered if someone could help us out with a rough ball park figure of what most modded fd\'s sell for as ive  seen a few but they seem to vary a fair bit. Im ideally after one with 400+hp

cheers

its quite a varied range. thats the prob.  if you went for an early rex ( 92> 95)

in good condition, proof of rebuild and single tub 400hp your prob looking 5500>7000

personallly i`d aim for a standard low mileage example and get the kit for it yourself.

a few about.  approx 5k  then spend 3k for your own spec tub set

although saying that. recently a really nice single tub just went for 4500 with rebuild. i think alot of it is down to personal preference. how much money has been spent/ is it to your taste   i`d recommend going to see lots of them. not buying the first you drive ( as tempting as it will be) after a few you`ll be able to tell the ones that have been cared for. also post pics on here of the cars you like. people will give there opinion. and say how long its been on the market for.

there is one rz on pistonheads at the mo. thats been up for sale for nearly 2years.alarm bells imo

hope this helps if not i`ve been waffeling on before work half asleep :-)

Welcome to MRC Nik :Thumbsup!

Good to see you now want some Rotary power after all those pistons :chat

Seriously if you have not driven an RX-7 you will be impressed and then really really want one :3gears-lh,

Main reason is because the RX-7 is so much lighter than a Skyline meaning that a 400 BHP RX-7 will be pushing up the road the same as the equivalent to a Skyline that has 650BHP+ and as well you will know a Skyline with that power is going to cost real money :2Rolleyes,

We have more than enough good people with this club to try and help you along the way with what you are looking for,

Good luck out there :driving

cheers for the comments and suggestions.

i have to agree one of my main reasons for wanting a rx7 is the power o weight ratio. gonnaa try and look at a few in the near future and then see about selling my r34 skyline.

i really like skylines and will very likely buy another at some point but im keen to try an rx7 as i was going to get one of these initially but got sidetracked by a good deal on  my first skyline....3 skylines later and im concidering it again :)

what sort of mods do these need to reach 400-500hp at the flywheel as  usually i would be thinking of forged pistons as one area to improve  but  how does that work for rotary engines...

i assume the rest is bigger turbo, fmic, injectors, fuel pump, decat,  downpipe, ecu, filter, exhaust and boost controller. have i left anything  out.

You\'e got most things there that you\'ll need. A couple of extras i\'d add is a stronger clutch, maybe a twin plate type, and then maybe a stronger diff or just some braces if you\'ve gettting near the 500bhp mark so that things are nice and tight as you can damaged/break the diff with hard lauches with that kind of power.

my 34 does 0-60 in 5.3 seconds and does 0-100 in 13.1 what are the times for a stock rx7 as i see differeing comments on the net so im not exactly sure.

also how much do they weigh as i hear the spirit r version weighs around 1200kg but others are between 1280-1310kg. my r34 weighs 1410kg so not miles away.

im just trying to find one thats local to me so i can try one and see what there like as yet i havent even driven one. im sure i will like it though as ive heard plenty of good comments.

I wouldn\'t worry to much about which type of model to get, although i would say not to get a type X (touring), not that its a bad car, just you get slightly more from the type R\'s and above. To be honest once you\'ve changed the suspension and a few other bits there\'s nothing really different between the range and as most have been modded already those changes are lost anyway.

ou can take off best part of a second on the 0 to 60 with a good driver and prob 1.5 seconds off 0 to a 100.

the touring autos are the heavy rex`s. . an R is 1250 iirc knocking 150kg off a car weight is alot. thats equvilant to loosing driver and passenger..

having involvement with skylinesfew years back ( hense my username) i can garentee you will be shocked how well a good stock rex will perform compared to your current skybus. which is not a slouch at all.

i`ve been in a 650hp r34 and was playing with another mates 420hp sigle tub rex.

the skybus had the jump for first 100meters then the rex`s power to weight showed. upto the 130 ( on a private road ..obviously) the rex had 2 car lengths.. not loads you may think but 220hp less.

you`ll love the rex. :-)

sounds good.....very encouraging.

once agian cheers everyone for the  comments and advice. I was struggling a bit with which model to aim for but as said most of the simple mods to most make them about the same.

is there any examples that you know of that are well worth avoiding eg any that have been for sale for ever that you know about. would be a great help to me if you know of any. i know on the skyline front theres some on pistonheads that look like bargains but have sat for sale for ever when dearer ones have sold quickly.

cheers

Wotcher, welcome to the club and all that

IIRC Mazda claimed something like 5.6 seconds o-60 for a stock FD. A lightly modded one will be faster, evidently.
Quote from: monkfish;738406also how much do they weigh as i hear the spirit r version weighs around 1200kg but others are between 1280-1310kg. my r34 weighs 1410kg so not miles away.
Not miles away!? That\'s like two and a bit fat passengers! :rollin

The speed of an FD and that of a Skybus are two totally different things, and I always think it\'s a bit of a mistake to compare them in just pure numbers. An RX-7 will be involving, alive, visceral and exiting to drive. A Skylard, even one exactly as fast or faster will seem sterile and unexciting in comparison. Just doooooo it :D

Are you the Monkfish of Fast Show, fame, just out of interest? Y\'know, "get yer knickers on and make me a cup of tea"? I\'m a massive fan if so :Thumbs-up

thats inspector monkfish to you :rollincrikey i had to youtube that to see what it was that was a while back......i did see it but never would have remembeed that ha ha.

cheers for the welcome.

although im encouraged with the all the good descriptions of the rx7\'s handling i do have  to mention that the skyline to me anyway is not a dull unweildly beasty is actually quite nimble and ive owned mr2\'s and ftos so its not bad at all. However i get what you mean in that it is heavier and larger to manouvre.
the weight thing was that when i looked online it stated the rx7 in all but the spirit r forms were 1280 kgs in weight which is 120kg less than my 34gtt so its not a huge ammount different as 100 - 120kg is no that heavy at all if your a tall chap. or into weightlifting  or just enjoy pies lol. ive compared times  with just me and with a passenger and the engines got a fair ammount of tourque and doesnt really alter much with either one or two people in the car

still its nice to hear  similar comments about how quick they are in stock form even.

im well keen to try one of these now.

also loving the carbon on your car carbon rx
