Title: Turbo options for 450bhp(ish)?
Post by: L18M on January 11, 2011, 10:11:17 PM
i think i must the the unluckiest rex owner in the world! not even Nik is anywhere near close to me.

Finally have the fc running and engine rebuilt twice now, hopefully wont be 3rd time lucky, but when taken out for a test run the exhaust started to pour out lots of smoke.

Given the engine is 100% ok it might be a oil seal in the turbo (xs power, no comment). Assuming it is the turbo (mani will be taken off tmr for inspecting to make sure is not from engine) what are my turbo options to get 450bhp?

setup:
extended street port s5 fc engine
v mount
bosche 044 fuel pump
sard fpr
1680\'s secondary inj
3" exhaust
ext wastegate (not sure on size)
exidy organic clutch
profec b spec 2 ebc
AP Eng PFC

I think ideally a hotside a/r 1.0 for a quicker spool but wont run out of puff higher up in the rev range (after all, rotaries are happier revving the nuts off them) and thats all i know.
Nice to get a T04R, GT35 but what else is out there that people would recommend?
Holset hx35? Master power?
Budget of about £500.

am open to ideas as my turbo knowledge is rather limited.

CHeers guys & girls.

PS not i have not driven it nor picked it up. will prob visit her tmr.

you should be able to tell if the turbo oil seals are gone by looking for oil seeping out of the compressor side.

Internet myth says those turbos like a restictor in the feed to stop them smoking.

very true, different turbos require a different size restrictor in the oil feed pipe on the top of the turbo. if not restricted correctly too luch oil can be pushed passed the seals and out the exhaust.

Thats not a myth. my mate suffered with it on his Skyline. Bought another XS power turbo (or got it relaced can\'t remember). It was the same, smoking like a ...... Turned out he hadn\'t fitted a restrictor in the oil feed line. Soon as he did it all stopped.

2nd that - I run a hybrid turbo - probably good for upto about 350-400 bhp, and that requires a restrictor for the oil feed.

Another cause for smoking from the turbo is a poor or blocked oil drain.  Make sure the drain is big enough - for your turbo AN10 or bigger, and flowing downhill, as there is no pressure this side - so it needs to be able to drain back to the oil pan and not pool in the hose/pipe.

Ye myth was probably the wrong word to use. I am trying a non branded one (say what you like people I\'m trying it and that\'s that) so did a bit of the usual googling.

Do you know what size restrictor your mate used?

I can find out. I seem to have 6mm in my head but I\'d have to check. He\'s in South Africa till tomorrow but he is gonna give me a bell when he lands so I will ask him then.

i had a look at the turbo today... the compressor wheel and exhaust wheel looked ok. the shaft (rather small but then is a small tub) had a fair bit of wear on it and there was also a sleeve off the turbo that has a fair amount of of dents and looked a bit warped :(
i only covered about 200 miles off boost with it so no matter what sixe restrictor it has, not going to help :(

need to find price to get it rebuilt or else look for a bigger tub :p
back to main question, any one got any suggestions?

not bad...but i would say a MPt61 or MPt62 would be better

I personally think a MPt64 is perfect for a street ported block

Just spoke to my mate. He was advised to use a 1.5mm restrictor. He thought that was a bit small so made a 3mm one to try first. The 3mm one worked a treat and thats what he is still running now.

Garrett factory recommendation is around 1.1mm from memory.

Depending on the oil viscosity you are running and how much oil pressure your car has (how new engine is) then you will need to run this to fully stop it ....ing out oil into the turbine exit pipe.

If you have fully cured it you can idle the car for 30 minutes with no smoke show, most of the larger ones trialed by people only cut the leakage rate so its not as bad on small levels of idling etc.

Mine is around 1.3mm from memory. But the other thing with these is how long they are (which no one mentions!) this has an effect too. There are quite a few variables to consider as to why one size wont cover all situations. 3mm is way to big unless its very long, enough to cause a suitable pressure drop that a much smaller 1.5mm would do over a shorter distance.

Im not saying your wrong but it worked out for my mate. He figured it was better to try something a bit bigger incase 1.5 was too small and starved the turbo of oil. If it still smoked on a 3mm one he was gonna go smaller untill it stopped. For him the 3mm one worked but on another car it may be too big. His was only around 3mm thick iirc too. I think I\'d do it that way too if I couldn\'t find any info online about the subject.
