Title: CAS position help needed.
Post by: captainbizzaro on January 08, 2011, 06:01:03 PM
In my enthusiasm to get going on my project I removed the front cover without making any references to position of the CAS relative to the front pulley. I\'d like to get the CAS on the 12AT front cover thats now on the 13BT before I put the lump in the FB as it\'s one less thing to faff about with bent over getting backache etc, so can someone please explain if there is a simple method of aligning this back up.

It\'s an S4 lump if that makes a difference.

Cheers.

Presumably your pulley set has timing marks on it, if it does, then these steps should see you right :)

1.  Line up the pulley so the first of the two marks is lined up with the prong that comes out of the cover (timing reference).

2.  On the CAS itself, there is a mark on the shaft and a mark on the gear - line these up with each other - then whilst trying not to move the gear, drop it into the CAS shaft so that the timing adjust slot will hit roughly centre with the bolt that secures it (and allows adjustment).

3. push it home firmly.  Once the engine is running, you can check timing with a gun and adjust the CAS by rotating it back and forth as needed.

Trouble is I forgot to mention that I took the pulley off in the same burst of enthusiasm! So is the timing reference TDC on rotor 1?

Here\'s a piccy of the timing mark - the first mark is shown almost alinged on the pin, the 2nd timing mark is just hidden by the water pump pulley. You can see the CAS in the right hand side of the photo - I\'ll see if I can find pics of the line up marks.

Yes - TDC on rotor 1.

Here\'s the piccy from the service manual for the CAS marks:

Okay cheers Dave, so I\'ve just got to figure out which way the pulley goes on now-should be able to work it out from the position of the rotor through the leading spark plug in rotor one. I think.

By the way - I was once told (and from two engines I\'ve pulled apart, it seems to be true) that the pulleys are drilled / marked for drilling once they are on the engine and the holes will only align properly in one position - so you should be able to get the pulley lined up ok

Good luck with it - seems to be coming along nicely :)

Sorted, luckily as you mentioned it appears Mazda drilled the holes allowing the pulley to only sit in one place, probably preempting some fool in Dorset getting over excited. So that was easy, pulley back on and CAS lined up as shown. Hoorah.

Little bit of a thread revival
But in the middle of rebuilding my first FC block
Can anyone tell me where to find the timing marks on the pulley?
I have found two indents that are very close together on the outer edge (rear) of the main pulley would these be the timing marks?
