Title: V8 conversion....
Post by: STU13 B on December 30, 2010, 05:25:55 PM
Hi guys,

i was just wondering if anyone has any info on sticking a v8 into an fd3s?

I brought the car cheep as u may know and want to use it for drifting. Im not 100% convinced the rotary will be up for the job, dont get my wrong its runs well but if i spend 1k getting it serviced mapped etc then in a years time it goes pop its gona then be the best part of 2 - 3k for a rebuild. Im thinking you cant beat the sound of a v8, the power is there and they are reliable.

Has anyone done this?

I will be taking the engine out in the new year along with all the other tuning goodies so keep an eye on the forsale section aswel.

Cheers Stu

I just highlighted part of your text that could not be further from the truth!

A yank engine better sounding than a rotary? :spank

Now go and wash your mouth with bleach!

I would speak to the drift guys who have a rotary first, a v8 conversion will bite you in the leg getting it done, don\'t kid yourself into thinking that it will be cheap.

This is becoming a disturbing trend, where people with engines that are fine are still deciding to cop out and get a conversion.

I have nothing against the v8, by all means sell your rx7 and buy a chevy :Thumbsup!

A rx7 with a v8 is like a chick with a d!ck (quoted from rx7club), it\'s just not right!

oh god no. the V8 question. your in for the chop now dude. quick run and hide, i`ll hold them off as long as i can ;-)

i`d recommend using the search button. you`ll find info via that.

also want a v8 fd. hope you have 10k spare. you`ll need it for the conversion

If your wanting to lok at the conversion and the parts needed, check these guys out http://grannys.tripod.com/3rdgenrx7chevyv8.html.

They seem to be the guys most people get the kits from.

you can be looking to spend anything between 10-£15,000 depending on how much if any of the conversion you can do yourself.

Hp from an LS v8 will probably give you 400hp with the same in torque.

10-£15,00 spent on a 13b could give you upwards of 550hp. Rough guesses from me.

Dont worry about people saying "your taking away what an RX7 is, its a rotor and should have a rotor in it" blah blah blah. at least you would be keeping it as a whole car with just a different engine in it, unlike some people that when they have completed their rx7 project and want to start another rx7 project strip the car down and sell the parts which removes another of these amazing cars from the streets.

If i had £15,000 spare cash i would have a v8 with out thinking twice about it!!:Thumbs-up:Thumbs-up:Thumbs-up

V8\'s sound awesome, rotaries sound awesome too, however the v8 would have to have straight exhaust for me just for the sheer smile factor!

Hope this helps???

Would it be wrong then to put a rotor in a chevy? Or is it ok doing stuff that way? converting piston to rotor? but not rotor to piston?

a 3rotor turbo in a manaro? or maybe into a pontiac firebird? which i happen to have in the garden!

i think im getting carried away now,

No disrespect to anyone,, but love to race v8 with my 20b.. Wanna c how many car gaps do I give to it... V8 are viruses which have been downloaded into the rotary engines... This conversation makes me laugh.....go on mate it\'s ur money so do wat u have to do!!!

I know there would be no comparison in performance, but if a v8 had similar modifications to your 20b what would win?

eg, a turbo, 8,000rpm, big cam, lightened flywheel etc etc.

V8 would win hands down? but obviously the cost in developing the v8 with that spec would cost a lot more so comparisons where 2 cars have different specs would be pointless

I have no issue with any of this but be aware there is a very nice 680bhp V8 FD [before the twin turbos were fitted] which you may surprise you.

Each to their own - I respect them both.

well I m sure even if all those mods u mentioned are done to the v8,, I seriously doubt that v8 would even come near to 20b..I m not exagerating.. But trust me once u own a race spec 20b which I had and currently being prepared for a 1000bhp launch at Wgt, u would c my point. I have driven v8 and owned one for 2 years.. I can live with fact that v8 "may be" reliably tuned compared with rotary but I m sorry can\'t accept that v8 would beat rotary... I wud love to b proved wrong but I m sure that wud need some time for piston to grow more...

Really? where can i see this beast? is it the one that was in the general section a while ago? as i keep checking for it but no updates? twin gt35 IIRC?

I enjoy both rotaries and v8\'s as they both make awsome sounds (worlds apart though they are) but if any rotor ethusiast that can say they wouldnt have a smile in the corner of their mouth if they watched any main event at santa pod, bracket racers all the way to top fuellers, v8s sound good and the performance is insane!

There is a fair few V8 RX7\'s in the country and most of them get used properly on Track.  I have one and love it to bits. If I was to do it again I\'d go for the newer LS3 engine over a LS1/2/6.  I researched the conversion for a good while and had the engine before I had a chassis to put it in, the choice was either, Porsche 944 or 968 and the Mazda.  The Mazda chassis was a better choice for me and I\'ve always loved the shape of the FD.  I looked into all the conversion routes, Granny\'s and Hinson Kits but it was more cost effective and undoubtedly a better job to have it built for me by Craig Taylor ( tinker27 )

Good luck and keep us posted on how you get on.

I hope u r right, but I m afraid that I m not convinced.. It has been mentioned that there is 680bhp v8 so let c if I ever had a race with her. My car need to come out for running in may b next week, I m running a smaller turbo to run it in and waiting for some cash to change my ecu from microtech to motec..if by that v8 680bhp was there I would love to test my car out with it-just c wat v8 would do with my 20b..
As I mentioned above in the first line I m doing this conversation not to cause anyone any offence, just airing my opinion...that\'s all really

Well if we look at the peak performance of a rotor and a piston engine, we have the 787B in rotary corner and either a formual1 car or the audi lemans diesels in the other, which would win? these are the peaks of performance and the piston would win every time, if only rotaries had the same develpoment as what the piston engines have had instead of the aftermarket doing the development with little money.

Does a diesel engine have pistons?? If the diesel engine have pistons, I would c ur point..but if not then Audi diesel should not b compared with rotor as we r comparing piston v rotor..so far I m aware diesel don\'t have pistons, it has taputs or something they call it.. As far formula one is concerned, v can\'t compare it coz apperantly it\'s a formula 1 car made for desired purpose I.e racing,,not a rotor or v8 which is driven on road.. I will look forward to meeting you some time. Diesels do have pistons unless they have redesigned them? they go uppy downy so must be a piston?
a little bit off point but there was a rotary engine designed for a tank that would run on diesel and any form of fuel that could be used if they ever ran out of diesel

Hi Dave

Unfortunately, its not ready yet!! Will be ready God\'s willing next week or so...my previous rebuild was f**** up just because of the tunning, however; this time I am taking no chances that is why its taking more time...Pip at WGT is doing some magic so see what he can bring me...a 1000bhp as hoped or less!!!

Where abouts you live Dav, as you know I have to do running of the car any way so I might just pop over to you have a quick chat and then off I go??

I like the way you mentioned 20B (above) before all those piston engine lollll:cheers

I am undecided with the Gear Box at the moment as I want to keep OS Giken\'s gears in the FD trane, but people are suggesting otherwise so see how I go about that....I hate putting a gear box on my car which is not of a rotary box i.e. Vipers box etc etc...

Will meet you any way, waiting on the delivery of the car..:3gears-rh

Hi Syed,
I\'m in South Wales and you\'d be extremely welcome anytime!! If that\'s a bit too far let me know as i\'ll travel closer to you as i\'d really like to see your car.
If money were no object the 20b with a massive turbo would be my first choice, then the V8 and finally a Skyline / Supra engine.........in reality this last choice may end up being my first as i\'m a classic at starting a project then never finishing :2Rolleyes and i already have lots of Skyline parts here already.
I\'ve been offered an R35 at a great price by a mate who\'ll need to sell soon so i\'m also toying with that........
Let me know when you are up and running and i\'ll get my camera ready, i\'m sure Mark aka Mr Skybusr34 would be extremely interested to see it as well so i\'m sure he\'ll also be there :cheers

This is a bit of a silly question but what do you use to weld titanium? A gig welder with titanium filler rods?

When are you hoping to get the v8 Twin Turbo up and running? Would like to see your car, where abouts are you located?

You use ti filler rods or just fuse it together , same as stainless or mild steel but it\'s normally thinner so harder to do . It also has to be clean like alloy . These threads always descend into a roundabout of intrasigence lol. I love both V8s and rotaries. Part of me wishes I\'d gone for a V8 long ago (about two engines back lol) part of me is glad I stuck with the rotary and made it work. One of each would be best, I think....

Craig, would you entertain a one-off welding repair to a titanium exhaust I managed to break?

yes i can weld it for you as long as its not to far gone , let me know if you need it doing, as for the whole v8 v rotary debate it will go on and on but i just wish people would realise its not a "which is best contest " there are more people do it to make a great car than fix a blown rotary. at least with nearly 20 out there now we have proved it works so its on track and the road . what other rear wheel drive sports car can you get for sub 30 grand that has the performance of one of these ? 400 bhp @ wheels 1250 kg ?  a tvr is probably the closest (only 75 bhp down),

If you want to have a v8 in an fd (or any car fir that matter:) , look no further than the man above. I\'ve seen a fair few of Craig\'s conversions while i\'ve been standing around having the pi** taken, waiting for him to fix my .... ups, and i never cease to be impressed at the work and attention to detail that he lavishes in the cars. Truly epic.

I\'ve always said my ideal garage would have a white 13b powered fd, and a black burnout kitted ls. Both brilliant cars, both brlliant engines. Arguing about which is better is purile, you may as well discuss whose dad would beat up whose, or whether an xbox is in fact better than a ps3.

Great work Tinker.

That is definitely a work of art.

Your work is top notch. No doubt about it.

Just seeing it in a rx7 is something I can\'t agree to. Not knocking your work or anything at all, that\'s just my opinion. Just put it in anything else and I can enjoy it :p

Where do you see a rotary in the world? In a rx7...

The audience for a rotary is already small enough as it is.. therefore those who decide to try and advance the rotary by commiting to R&D to improve it etc need the support of the small community it involves.

As more ditch the rotary, the less costs on R&D can be covered by those rotary tuners and builders.

It will be a sad day when no one continues to develop the rotary engine because the customer base is not there to do so.

My 2p worth

Excellent stuff, I\'ll get some pics of the split and PM them to you so you can offer an opinion if it\'s possible. :D

I also agree on the "not just an alternative to a blown engine" argument, the Yanks have always been able to make incredible engines even out of old skool pushrod tech, it was simply the rest of the cars that were wretched dynamically. Putting a snorting v8 into a decent chassis is hardly a brain-teaser, is it?

Mind you, the rotary is an amazing engine in it\'s own right, too. What it isn\'t is durable :(

Hi guys, I agree with durability and blown engine comments above, but I would like to stress this point that rotary is not durable in the UK, as unfortunately we don\'t have tuners like Gabby Skern from port Rico and Alex of Kiwi Re from newzeland. If u luk at the stats rotary is unreliable in the Uk only!!!!look at Australia where ppl use rotaries in trucks, wagons etc etc!!! We seriously lack good, unbaised and reliable tuners.. Speaking from experience in the UK u wud go to the engine builder to get ur engine built, if engine fails the first thing he does is "Sorry mate can\'t cover this blown engine" and then he will b so busy to find a way to put the blame on you.. It\'s like you are pig in the middle and told to go here and there...no professionalisim...I wish someone come out and say something unambiguous about warranting the engine, I have never dealt with Haywood Rotary but their claim abt warranty of the engine is very convincing... No disrespect to no tuner and builder in the UK,, but I seriously think v need reliable tuners in the UK to make rotary last otherwise rotaries are going down in numbers 20 of em have already been butchered....

Thanks for the invitation, will have to arrange it sometime soon. Are you in your shop on weekends? We are in Huddersfield so it is not too far away to drive down there. And permitting the clutch on my FD gets sorted we will come down in that.

Hey Tinker-27, can you source Cobra 8.8 diffs?

If so how much?
Title: V8 conversion....
Post by: tinker-27 on December 30, 2011, 09:32:14 PM
Hi I don\'t source them but I am working on a bolt in kit for a FD , the drive shafts are available of the shelf in the states , but the fitting kit is not great and very expensive , I have a diff and shafts here ready to make the kit , but trying to find time .

I am in the throws of ordering the Samberg kit. Getting a diff fro
The states is pricey so I thought I\'d ask.

You saying the Samberg 8.8 kit isn\'t great?

Hi Mate

I am also in a process of buying 8.8 Diff. Justin Samberg\'s Diff cradle is great. I have only heard good things about it.

Who you buying the 8.8 diff from?

Cheers

Not in my opinion , where they mount it to is not strong enough , well depending on what you want from it but I would not use one on my car , the front end stuff is better , nice welding well put together but not keen on the rear set up . Look at the distance from diff mount to front mount ( where it will try to turn on) this is short , then look at the two tabs it goes to . The rear subframes are not strong at all or is the floor , it\'s thin to be light as the power frame takes the load on a rotary . Are you fitting it to a rotary or V8 ?

Obviously I would rather source a diff kit from the UK if I can. Would yours be one you will be shipping out or would I have to come to the garage to get it fitted?

Do you have an estimate price wise?

I am going the LS1 route and am buying gear that will support 500bhp.

The diff I am sourcing from the states (keep an eye on the no rotors forum), but again if I could get one from the UK it would be better. The postage is pretty hefty.

Yep, just the mounting gear. He sources the shafts from Drive Shaft Shop on request.

Do you have an ETA for your rig?

I know the samberg one needs some mounts welding to the chassis unless you have a 95 rex. Don\'t know if you are aware of this?
Title: V8 conversion....
Post by: tinker-27 on January 02, 2012, 02:31:16 PM
Not sure on eta but in the next month or so I hope , 95 on have extra brackets on the subframe not the chassis , I have all the parts there just need time !!! ( I will try to get on with it )

Bah, now do I wait or not :)

You reckon your setup will be able to keep stock exhaust routing? apparently the samberg one doesn\'t so you end up with reduced clearance.

Interested in the outcome of this thread. The stock rear cover mounting point clashes with the subframe so either part has to be modified. There is the option of fitting an aftermarket cover without bracket from a rock crawler or similar. Ours was machined and welded locally for sensible money.

his aim is 14psi and reckons he will crack 1,000 whp too. i cant wait.

but he has broken somethings on it at the rear end recently so is upgrading them first before upgrading power i think

I am making a complete new back plate with the top mounts incorporated , I\'m trying to make it strong enough to take as much as we can throw at them !! The subframe will also be strengthened alot

yes its been running for about two thousand miles , it made 722 bhp @wheels on 4 psi and 823 ft lb atb 1bar @3500 rmp then the spark was to weak as i was still on the NA spec plugs whigh are 55thou gap , we did go off the dyno screen at one point at 1250ftlb when we put in 20 psi by mistake, ive only been using spring presure on hte road till i get back to the dyno to get the 1 bar map sorted . To be honest its enough it will light the tyres at 80mph on the motorway and spin them till 140 !!!, its also very civil to drive normally of boost due to decent gearing you can drive round above trafic speed under 2000rpm off boost and its good on fuel at that as well . the first drag run i went to it snapped one of the unbreakable drive shafts as soon as it hit 3000 rpm in second so i have ordered a set from the states with 108mm cvs inner and outer , i thought the FD cv would break first but it was the shaft !!  . im just fitting some feed rear arches and some yoko 315,30,18 ready for the spring i will post some more pics soon

American ebay. Private seller had it as a spare for their Cobra. New/never used item still with the preserving oil in it. Cost $900, but she managed to source the all important inner CV\'s for $200 with low mileage. The CV\'s are possibly the hardest parts to procure. DSS can supply an uprated alternative, but think they are $800 for the pair from memory.

Was looking at V8 RX7 swaps on google and came upon this thread. I was wondering how much was a realistic budget to get one of these swaps done?

Tinker-27 - if someone supplied you with basic essentials of the FD with blown rotary engine or a rolling shell minus engine, LS engine and gearbox how much would you charge to carry out the conversion and what sort of timeframe would people expect to completion?

Thanks for any info. :Thumbs-up
