Title: Uprated box options
Post by: Rex_FTW on December 30, 2010, 12:45:23 PM
What options are there for uprated boxs guys?
Not looking to spend the Earth on one but will spend a fair bit.
Something that will handle lots of power!

What do you want to achieve?

We are fitting a sequential box into our car at the moment.  It is also available in a H Pattern.

When you say you dont want to spend the Earth...what is your budget?

There is always the quaife alternative....but Im not sure how proven it is, and personally I think it is very expensive for what it is!

What power are you looking to handle?

anything sequential is gonna be mega ££ and will need rebuilds after certain mileage...

i would look at ppg or os ginken gear sets they are stronger but you are kidding your self if you think it will be cheap... think the sets are over 2k and then you will be looking at 800-1k for a rebuild...

Atomic what price is your box? What power has it handled?
Malice I know the stronger gear sets will cost a fair bit, like you said, that\'s why I am trying to find options.
If all else fails it will have to be a OS gear set!

A race box or a box with a decent set of straight cut or Dog gears is always going to cost real money, if you can\'t afford these then look at the 6 speeed RX-8 gear box as quite a few people have now run these over the years with good results strength wise.

I\'\'ve been reading up on the T5 box out of the Cosworth using a 13b adapter plate for the bell housing, run with the Os giken dog gear set. Something ill be looking into more when ive got other bits sorted.

for a propper sequential box you are looking 6-8k i think if not more! i always wanted an hks air shifting sequential box... but not really practical to use on the road lol!

the rx8 box seems a good swap as clive said but the shifter sits further forwards why no one has modded the shifter so it sits in the stock place i dont know its simple enough....

Colum on FDUK has modded the RX8 shifter so its in the stock position, and just runs a din blanking plate,

isnt there some kind of limit with the casing? so whilst you can put in straght cut/ dog gears, (and IIRC the quaife gearset is approx 3k) it probably wont be able to handle as much extra power as you would think?

The Rx8 box shifter comes up where the headunit normally is, so he made a extended shifter that brings it infront of the stereo hole, to make it look neat he had a blanking plate with a hole where the shifter came through.

I don\'t have a picture but will try to draw tomorrow.

hnmmm i think i understand... but at the same time people that do like 2jz swaps in to other cars if the shifter comes up in the wrong place they just cut the shifter in half, weld a flat plate to the top of the part that goes in the box then at the other end of the plate which will put the shifter in the right place they weld the top part of the shifter on so it comes up in the right place, makes the throw a bit longer but use a short shifter to begin with then it should be about normal...

I think its similar to what you have explained above.

The quaife set up is more than £3k  and you still need to build it!  Plus you are then at the mercy of the existing box.  As Clive says, if you are worried about the price then best to not do it.  I have a kit to put in a manual supra box if you fancy that route?

The box we are putting into our car is about £8k + the new horrid VAT (£9600)

It comes with everything including adaptor plates.  Once we have fitted it to our own car we will be in a better place to advise on the mounting set up.

The box is one of the best on the market and is made here in the UK, so wont be subject to the volatile exchange markets.  It will handle up to 1000bhp, something you wont get from similar priced quaife/hewland boxes.  The HKS box is a re badged Hollinger box.

No aftermarket box is going to be a simple bolt in...there will always be a modicum of fabrication needed.

If you need any further information on the box....email me and I\'ll answer any question you have :)

atomic, what kind of service intervals are you looking at with your gearbox? is it a race only solution or could it be realisticly used on the road (both useablity and service intervals), also is the H pattern any cheaper, or at that point is it pointless spendign that much, and should jsut go for a RX8/supra etc  box?

Im not sure that the Rx8 box will handle the potential power you are intending to run in your car.  I have heard differing opinions on the strength of the box, I guess the proof will be the FB we are building as that has an Rx8 box in it.

As for the Supra Box....it is probably one of the best options, if you can find one!

The Maktrak box is a good option, and the service intervals are very infrequent!  It is very suitable for a road box, and will link with the ECU and help with the traction and launch control.

What sort of power have these handled? And how does it compare to the 5 speed FD?

Hey Speedy this sounds interesting, has this been done before? Any links? :Thumbs-up

Maybe one day in the future I will get a sequential but for now I will have to wait!

The supra box sounds like an interesting idea, is this the 5 speed or 6 speed supra box?

Is your kit the bell housing to fit the supra box?
