Title: badly running fd
Post by: deelou on December 23, 2010, 05:37:30 PM
went out to start fd today(haven\'t driven since 5 days ago was running fine then). cranked ok but with a copious amount of white smoke. immediately started running rough. drove it 100m n first gear. second was worse. no backfiring that i noticed r can remember. sounded like tapping. seemed like was going to die out but didn\'t. checked connections of spark plugs, seem ok. boost guage fairly constant. previously engine was very strong but turbos(std twin) a bit smoky. has an apexi power fc and had been tuned. temp abt 3 degree C. someone tell me its not a blown engine plz lol! any ideas? cheers..

I would suggest get the compression test first, secondly check the engine for water seal issues. Where abt u base?? I can offer to help anyone based in London for free of charge. If u r in London or near let me know. What you have described is \'seemingly\' not a good sign!!

wasn\'t just shady compression due to frozen seals? Mine done this in scotland last year and i almost shat myself!!! Didn\'t sound like a tractor did it?

don\'t worry too much about the smoke, it\'s probably just steam. as long as it goes away after five minutes driving you\'re fine (mine smokes like a ....... in the cold weather).

do the champagne test, it\'s a quick and dirty way of checking if the water seals are gone. take the filler cap off and start it up, if you see bubbles then your seals are dead.

rough running can easily be caused by a split vac hose so check them all, get your plugs out and give them a clean as well (tip down in a bit of oven cleaner :Thumbs-up).

thanks for all the replies. i was literally moving the car to park it up before heading on hols so didn \'t get a chance 2 look into it unfortunately. it didn\'t particularly
seem to be running lumpy. just like it was missing a spark on one of the plugs. accelerator just made it sound faster not like it was going to die(i\'ve had one go pop before).fingers crossed til i get back....grey \'smoke\' i\'ve noticed before on startup, not so much white. thought was turbos on way out, and engine never used much water at all, compression was good(albeit tested back in summer).

just a quick update on car . tried 2 crank it over but wasn\'t really having it.  sounded a bit rough so quickly stopped that. deflooded it: took our rear spark plug, took out fuse, cranked it over. plug a little damp(petrol).did same on front again a bit damp. cranked it over.also a small quantity of fine mist visible around engine bay. compression sounded fine and no bubbles in water at all. fuse back in and started it again. ran a little rough for a few secs then was back to her old self after, took her out for a spin, no problems. must\'ve just been flooded  but i find it strange that it ran at all before if it was flooded?? but i suppose its possible to be running on 3 plugs?? oh well, better than a blown engine!!

I think you need to get your mapping checked...I had a same problem with my 13B a while ago, but got the car serviced and mapped..the problem disappeared completely....
