THIS WAS ROTORSTOCK 2004!! NOT 2005
Right, after speaking to men in the know doing the strip at rotorstock has cracked/snapped a seal so its rebuild time for me :(
No point crying about it. time to get on with it!
My choices are
Send it to Pip/Carl/Hurley after taking it out myself and stripping down to the block.
Rebuild it myself.
Rebuild it myself and get it ported.
Buy another engine. Then rebuild mine and keep it as a spare.
Personnally i would like to do the last option. But who supplies new ported engines, and how much are they? I assume i would need a mapable ecu, would i need anything else?
Mechanically i am skilled enough. I can spare up to £5k in a few weeks (but bang goes my respray and reline of the interior  )
What do you think guys?
Donato
Its possible to buy a whole new engine boxed and with a warrenty from some of the tuning houses in japan. I could be dead wrong though!
you could speak to rx motors etc and try and get a 2nd hand engine and drop that in while you play about with the knackered one
If you get yours rebuilt I\'d reccomend getting some level of porting done while it\'s in bits. A mild to medium street port won\'t alter driving characteristics much and will give you a good place to work from for more serious power gains if you choose to.
I used WGT and have nothing but good things to say about the quality of the work. I\'ve heard the same of Carl (Hayward Rotary), rx-motors and re:worx.
Hope you get it sorted quickly!
Iain
Ok been speaking to Carl and Pip, thanks for the advice guys.
Definitley going to get it ported, thinking medium porting.
Apex seals so..what seals do you think?
Single turbo? Is this the time to go for it?
Would like to build as much as a picture up as possible and get as much info as i can. Before i spend any money whatsoever i want to know whats best for my engine and what sort of costing to expect?
Whats it like driving a single turbo compared to twins?
Sorry for all the questions but i am looking at spending a lot of money and want to get it right FIRST time...
If you are serious about pulling the engine yourself and want a hand I would more than happy to help you. I like you want to learn as much as possible, and I dare say Steve would be curious to.
Dont forget, if you go single turbo route you need to budget for aftermarket intercooler
fuel pump and injectors
ecu
uprated?upgraded clutch.
I have had a lot of help from Ross @ Dragon with the single turbo route and i also know he does a engine rebuild with porting for a bit over £2600.
I would really like to do it myself for the experience if its going to save me money that i can spend elsewhere on the car, like puting it towards a single turbo conversion.
Ok guys if i decided to do it myself then how much is it going to cost?
Could i still get it ported, then assemble myself...?
How much are housings (if required)
How much is the kit?
Anyother price i should know?
I think i am capable of fixing it myself as i have previous engine rebuilding experience albeit piston engines....
if you\'ve bust a tip I\'d get new housings every time !
What power output are you aiming for? that really governs a) twins or single and b) what other stuff u\'ll need. Bare in mind that if u go single turbo at the same time u will be paying for a lot more than an engine; fuel system, labour for installation and tuning, intercooling, engine management etc etc. Add that lot to an engine rebuild (any thing between £2.5K and whatever u want to pay depending on spec/bits used) and its gonna be a BIG hit!
Speak to people who have set ups similar to those you are considering and see what they think about it.
A small single, or BB turbo will spool pretty quickly and not really give u \'worry-about-able\' lag - from cars I\'ve driven at least.
I have a friend who has been a mechanic all his life, like 30+ years. He bought an rx which then blew and decided to do it himself, by all accounts he will not do it again. Stick with the experts imho, they know them inside and out, literally.

Some engine builders use new rotor housings as a matter of course, others dont which obviously is reflected in the price. If you have damaged a tip and any part of it has left the groove in the rotor then you are looking at a new housing pretty much, doesnt take much to chew them up...
yeah its unlikely they would have survived unscathed
Cheaper is not always better
20b\'s question about what power you\'re shooting for is the key one. You should be able to push the twins to mid 300\'s fly-wheel, possibly a bit more.
What\'s John making with his?
My personal dream/plan is to get a set of larger twins - basically like having 2 smallish singles. Add to that a v-mount intercooler and some interesting ducting to get a cold air feed to the filters plus water injection and I\'ll have spend somewhere between 4 and 6k. Will be interesting to see what power it makes.
I could go for more with a big single but the twins are part of the car\'s character to me!
Not going to happen until next spring at the earliest though (need the cash and to get used to the current power!)
Iain
Just checked the dyno results and John got 316 RWHP @ 5,500rpm on stock twins...

which is bloody good from stock twins !
I have been speaking to Carl, (again very big thanks Carl!) and have been given a good idea of costings if decide to do this myself. Using new housings and replacing all gaskets/seals.
I think i will stick with the twin turbo set up as mid 300\'s is enough for me, and perhaps go for a mild to medium port, upgrade to a Apexi ECU and possibly ceramic Apex seals.
I have a couple of weeks to think about it, speak to the experts and make a decision, to be honest i would really like to do this myself as i have rebuilt piston engines before and would really like to rebuild a rotary.
General consensus on the ceramic seals is that they\'re only of real benefit for very high rpm applications (and you need to get a balanced crank shaft + other stuff for that) or high boost apps.
For the extra money you can be half way to the next rebuild!!!

Donato, if you want the car to be quiet do not get it ported. I only mention it because you did say (when discussing mods) you were not wanting the car to be too loud. I also wouldn\'t bother with ceramics.
If you are planning mid 300s you are going to need more of an intercooler than you\'ve got, or run WI.

Hi Robbie,
It was a shame I did not catch up with you on Monday.I would have liked to have shown you my really quiet back box,and demonstrated it too you.
I agree that you shouldn\'t have had ceramics in your engine Robbie, you have never really had the mods needed to justify them so far,Geff said at the time of the rebuild that you were intending to mod your engine ancillaries much more than you have so far.
More controlled boost will make them worthwile.
Also the porting does not make a car louder, the exhaust does.
Kind regards
Carl

Its in the pipe line :)
Carl, I ran the stock exhaust with the stock engine for the 146 miles it lasted and it was deadly quiet, then with the only change being the rebuilt ported engine the volume level more than doubled. Anyone who heard my car with the ported engine and stock exhaust - Rich, Max, Gary, John, Bob, etc will testify it was much louder than a stock engine with stock exhaust, as Donato has.
The ceramics will be tested to their limits as soon as my turbos make it into the UK, it\'s just been an absolute nightmare trying to get the things. Have now fallen out with TNT after they failed to collect them twice with no reason, so fingers crossed the supplier will be shipping them tomorrow and I will get them next week. It has gotten to the stage where by I have been looking at getting a return flight to the US so I can collect them and take them back in person.
If I hadn\'t had problems with getting practically every bit for the car it would have been running its full spec long ago, but as it stands my car has spent longer with my mechanic than me since I bought it 18 months ago. Rest assured 1/4 terminals will be posted up the first weekend after it is in one piece :)
sorry to hear it mate, looks like I was not the only casualty.
ported single turbos are amazing, well i like mine, just a shame i have to sell her
I think that was from last year, dude...
Hi mate, this thread is a year old! at least i hope it is!! :rollin
Well, I found it interesting reading anyway! :p
So, did you eventually rebuild your engine yourself, and how did it go!?
hee hee,
i removed the engine and sent it to pip for rebuild and porting, i then fitted it back in with non sequential turbos a big fmic 1300 injectors PFC etc its now running 300 at the wheels and got a 12.9 up the strip at rotorstock this year it did 21 runs in total and has done 50-60 laps of knockhill so far this year, has proved its reliability i think! :D
Ive just spent about 10 minutes reading all of this only to find out its over a year old.
Glad for you Donato after thinking that you did loads of runs at the weekend with no problems that I had heard off!
Next time I\'ll look at the date of the original post!!!
Not bad at all! Pretty impressed! (Decided not to do the rebuild yourself then!? ;))
Ha Ha thought it had gone again but i see you have added 2004 not 2005 !!!! :rollin :rollin :rollin

Thanks,
After i had done the maths, doing the rebuild myself would only have saved me £500 and then i wouldnt have had a the piece of mind of a 12month warranty from Pip....
Aah, fair play.
I was only interested as I am thinking that maybe I may do the rebuild of mine if and when it needs it.
I see,
Well, i can tell you, when it does happen, not for a good while hopefully! Then you will save yourself £500 by removing the engine yourself, if you decide to get someone else to rebuild and port it, its well worth removing yourself.
Cheers
Donato
Yeah, I\'m pretty confident I can at the very least I can cope with removing it myself. I\'m happy with a spanner (And a swear box! :D) so feel i can at least get that out myself!
Like you say though, hopefully won\'t have to be done for a while - according to Pip it\'s had a replacement engine put in at some point!
took mine out last month, sent it to tim rx motors strapped to a pallet, got it back 3 weeks later, now back in the car being run in.
if u have taken engines out before, very easy job, apart from removing down pipe. make sure u undo clutch cover bolts from clutch cover inspection hole to pull engine from bellhousing, as i didnt!!!!! make sure u undo earth strap from front plate as well, as i didnt and snapped it of with block and tackle.
leave turbos and inlet manifold on the engine, disconect power stearing and acon but leave piped up attatched to the car.
That bl**dy down pipe
All done now though...
so how much did just the engine cost?
cant remember, i will dig out the receipts when i get a minute.
i have an engine with 35k on it if u want it
Yonner, thanks but this thread is a year old....
lol who revived it lol
