Title: Hi from London
Post by: oveck4 on December 05, 2010, 10:41:29 PM
I\'ve finally laid my hands on a RX7 FD (3rd gen 1995) as a project car, the problem is i dont know much about the car(rotary engine no cilinders:confused:). I\'m a compleete newbie to this scene. By now its a no starter. The batery is flat as a ironing board. i\'ve started it before jumpstarting it.Started and stalled after a while. Now the a/c and wipers dont work and i wont start. I know the car will require an injection of money to get it in a good shape(need some interior parts as well). I would like to know who is a good specialist to have a look at it so i would know what is wrong with it. ive read a lot about RoTechniks which is close to me because i live in west London and they are in reading. But ive read as well they charge a lot. and another thing is Is there someone who would know where to get a new engine if needed?:3Confused

Thanx for the help....

Where abouts in west london are you dude? Theres quite a few FD owners over in NW, W and SW London - can think of 10 off the top of my head

Hounslow to be specific.

Ahh theres plenty of owners around that area - I can think of 5 within a 5 mile radius. Sounds like youve managed to flood your FD when it stalled. You got a link to the advert where you bought the car or any other info/pics. The FD community is quite a small one so its likely someone might know the car

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201048374193181/sort/priceasc/usedcars/model/rx7/make/mazda/page/1/radius/1500/postcode/tw47bl?logcode=p

the thing is; the mileage was wrong on the ad. so im sure the car is not in the best shape, im wouldnt be surprised it the engine would be in a bad shape. she interior isnt to tidy as such. but it\'ll change...

Ahh! See the benefits of a small community. The car belonged to a lad on here called "ruffryder"
I compression tested the engine about 6 months ago and off the top of my head, the readings were mid to high 6s which whilst isnt indicative of a rebuild, theres still certainly plenty of life left in the engine if maintained well. There were a few issues with the car but I cant for the life of me remember! I know it had replacement turbos at hayward rotary and there was an issue with it cutting out randomly
edit - i think when cold you had to keep the revs up initially till it warmed up.

so would u look at it? can u send me a link to your site? And another thing he told me; was thet it eats a lot of oil. Was there a leak somewhere? i was thinking about hauling it to RoTechniks for a thorough check and a fix. my budget is a bit tight for the moment.

As a general rule, I dont usually work on other peoples cars although I have done a few. I dont have a site (yet) but I mainly import FDs and sell them and as such I work on my own cars. I dont mind having a look around it to see if theres anything obvious that may have been missed.
You will have to define "a lot of oil." These engines are designed to use oil (a small amount is injected directly into the combustion chamber by the oil metering pump) so you will have to be more specific. If you are looking for a specialist, might I recommend Powergains motorsport in Romford

The car needs to be put on a lorry to get it there... Reading i think is closer

for the oil I was told to topup every 2 weeks. is that normal?
Title: Hi from London
Post by: Jit on December 05, 2010, 11:33:51 PM
Why would it need to go on a lorry? If its just flooded then a deflood is easy enough! Theres plenty of guides on here or I can show you how - its really simple.
Depends on how many miles youre doing in 2 weeks! I find its normal to top up around 750ml every 1200 miles

it looks like there is a electrical issue as well. as writen before. It might be one of the relays. ive checked the fuses they all are ok.
Title: Hi from London
Post by: Jit on December 05, 2010, 11:48:15 PM
Have you checked the fuses in the drivers footwell as well as the ones in the engine bay. AC not working is quite common on FDs to be fair. Reasons for that can be anything from duff AC pump to no gas or an Apexi ECU that hasnt setup for AC. Id still recommend taking it to Powergains as the labour rate is considerably more reasonable than Rotechniks.

Hi mate, if u need help with your fd, I wud recomend-learn abt your car and do most of things urself, if u need help with ur car, I m willing to help u for FREE. If unfortunately u needed any engine help, I can arrange that for u in a very cheaper price with genuine warranty. I have spent a lot of unescessary money on cow boy mechanics. You are better off reading about the car. Tim at rx motors have loads of housings on a resonable prices, u have pip at WGT who is very experienced with mapping. Remember one thing abt rotaries mate, they mostly blow due to heat and bad tuning. I know ppl on this forum who rebuild their engines and got it tuned by good tuners. I m willing to help u at no cost because I don\'t wanna see another "I" who get done by these cowboys out there. I have 20b engine now in my Fd so I may b able to help u with 13b parts. I am near A406 in ilford. Contact info 07862292616
regards
Syed

hey Mir how are you buddy? im sorry not to reply sooner. the problem is i cant do anything with my car sofar. i wish i would have some space to put it. i live in a flat with no garage and parking place. so the car is storaged at RoTechnics for the moment till i decide what to do with it. im thinking that i leave the whole work to them in the end. cause of the lack of space.

the rex needs a engine rebuild
most likely new twins, most likely a new clutch and if then a better flywheel,
new cat or decat, new air filters and pipes, new exhaust system,
new water pump, want to put in a better intercooler, and dont know if other auxiliaries need checking. then suspension needs to be checked front and back. didnt check for rust on the under carriage. and then the matter of interior and exterior. i will let the guys from RoTechnics sort out the engine as i dont have a clue about rotaries for the moment(im hitting the books to learn). then ill start on the other stuff.
:3Confused:3Confused:3Confused:Hammer:Hammer

if i forgot something, sorry but there is so much to do on this car. hope to get it running by the end of October. thet the interior and exterior works start.
so i have my work cut out for me so to speak...:Thumbs-up

No offence dude but from what youve just said, youre walking into a whole world of open wallet surgery. Why do you think the engine needs a rebuild? Has something happened since the last compression test I done? mid to high 6s isnt rebuild territory. Also I know the turbos on that car were changed a few months before you bought it. If you leave the car at a tuners and say "sort it all out" and dont discuss budget etc, youre gonna get taken for a VERY expensive ride (im talking no change from 8-9k at a guess from what youve just described!)
Title: Hi from London

most likely so.

ok then lets assume that the engine is ok. it certainly leaks in the  insides. the car billowed smoke like a dragon. still didnt want to start  when warmed up. had to put a bigger batery for added power to start  again. so most likely the batery was gone or the alternator didnt work  right. idling was really ruff and uneven. mostly the car choked and  smoked. and to be honest i dont trust this car. when i was talking to  the seller he said the car done cca 45k but on the speedo is a different  story(made a bit suspicious). its in km and its well above 100k(1mile = 1.61km), so my point  is i like to start from a clean slate so to say. i bought this car as a  project car. i dont understand the engine. otherwise ill done it my  self(ive dome my other runner which is a cylinder engine). but  suspension and other mechanical i can do. and the car went for a health  check and i was told that the rotor bearings are giving away which could  lead to inernal damage. so i decided to do a bit of upgrading. the  turbos i still didnt decide what to do with. i did get a price and it is  a reasonable bit lower than you said. and to be honest i fell in love with this  car, even in its sorry state. so if it takes what it takes i dont mind.  im not planing to give it away for a long time.

so should i opt for a second opinion? where else can i go with a non  runner when i live in london? all the good garages are miles away.

sounds like someone could be telling porkies pies to make some money out of the new fella...

Before you go any further mate i would be compression testing the motor and running through a few things before leaving it at a shop for them to have free range and hit you with a nice big fat invoice to fill !!

First things first find out from them exactly what is wrong with your engine and why they think it needs a rebuild. Get this in writing by email

so the car is almost done. front bearing on the shaft was gone, the front rotor bearing as well(hope i got the part right). the front rotor was rubbing on the housing left some scruff marks and marks on the rotor. and few leaks on the housings. apex seals almost gone, same as the side seals on rotors. air pump siezed, alternator barely working, ah and back box on exhaust is gone, mid pipe rusted trough as well, and not to mention new brake discs and callipers. and then the other bit is the headlamps. they have only one beam. missing high beam lights is a bit funny when u drive in the night i guess.  and not to mention the air filters needed replacing.

so this is mostly what was wrong. not to mention some electrical issues. like some gauges not working propperly. but that is just minor stuff.

:2Confused:eek: so i will have my baby back by the end of the month i hope.

:Party:Party:Party:Party:Party:Party
got my rex back on tuesday. have to say excellent job by Peter from RoTechniks. engine works like a clockwork now. starts all the time, with no hiccups. had done a decat and downpipe, bigger intercooler, engine rebuild, new backbox, dumped the air pump, fitted 4point harnesses, changed plug leads, new carbonetic pads and new brake discs all round. now its time for recuperation of monetary power, then on to the body kit and paint. As it stands i kinda like the VeilSide C1 kit, is not the usual what ppl put on their rex. Or as i am torn towards some relly good shocks and springs, and renewing the suspension, and suspension parts. but all in good time. as next year is my wedding.
oh yeah on leaving the garage, the first junction i take, i spun out... :3gears-lh:3gears-lh:eek: so mucho power... i liiiike.:InLove:chat:eek so many possibilities...:driving

ill do some piccies when i get time.
