Title: Engine problems after RS runs, please advise if you can...
Post by: Donato on June 02, 2004, 09:29:26 AM
Hi guys,

Hopefully someone can maybe shed some light on my problems developed after my funs at rotorstock on sunday.

About a month ago my car failed to spool the second turbo and made a vibrating noise, i switched it off for a minute restarted and it was fine after that.

Same thing happened on my last run on Sunday and since then it started idling at 100 revs so i turned the idle screw but it is idling between 800 and 1200 and a bit \'lumpy\' like its \'hunting\'
(From the day i got my car it has idled at 750 revs so smoothly you could hardly notice it was on.)

On the monday i started the car to let it warm before going on a run in the morning, it was very lumpy (someone thought it had throwen a tip) and the cat overheat light was on (it had only been running for a couple of minutes). Tried to drive it but it was terrible.

I then left the car for 1-2 hours and it started and ran fine with the exception of the idle still being lumpy. It took me all the way home to Edinburgh fine, it was fine yesterday, but the boost problem came back today, and has gone again!

I was told my secondary injectors are needing cleaned or replaced which would probably solve the boost issue as it sounds like fueling.

Ok but why the hunting on idle? Ever since the runs my boost gauge has been very fluttery as well, it goes up and appears to boost fine up to 0.8 on the gauge but as you can see from this picture it flutters at high speed back and forward on the way up (it only used to do this at max boost). On the boost digital display of the boost controller it goes up smoothly.

Please advise if you can. Thankyou

Regards

Donato

I also appear to have space and fitments for two accelerator cables but there is only one fitted, should it have two?

Your symptons are exactly the same as mine were when I chucked a tip at the Trax Track session last year

Idle was terrible after and the boost gauge started to flutter all the time

Not sure about the turbo issue

If you have damaged a tip slightly if its like mine it will idle terribly and have poor starting but will run fine in the higher revs given the less compression this requires afaik. Carl would be a good person to speak to

I\'d phone him, Carl Hayward under rotary vendors

Although I have noticed you are a long way from him

His details are in the rotary vendors section

Your second fitment for an accelerator cable is probably for cruise control (just a guess).

Mine has cruise and there is a box to the right of the brake master cylinder (as you look from the front of the car) from which the second cable attaches to the throttle linkage. I\'m guessing this is part of the curise control system

Unfortunately the pulsing of the mechanical boost gauge indicates a flutuation in manifold pressure that is caused by a missing pulse of a damaged seal on one of the chambers. Do a compression test to be sure. Hope it is not the case but pretty sure it will be.

Hi Anthony,
I have had some conversations with Donato and came to the same conclusion.
He is now looking at rebuilding it.
Kind regards
