Title: Looking for some help please guys...
Post by: STU13 B on November 13, 2010, 06:23:04 PM
Basicly the story goes, ive just started a new job and one of the guys there has an FD3S. Hes owned it for 4 years 1st uk owner and was a grade 4.5 when it came over.

The car he quote runs 400bhp (1st off said he has dyno printout but now he dosnt) but is still on standard twins. From what ive hurd this isnt cant be the case? However it also has a full stainless including headers, twin apexi filters, FMIC, apexi power fc (mapped in japan which i no isnt ideal), he knows nothing about the fueling so as far as it goes could be on standard injectors etc, uprated fuel pump, uprated paddle and lightened fly. Recipts of a rebuild in japan 8k ago before he go it. He hardly uses it. He said it has uprated tips? Recent coolent flush, and started once a week 2 make sure its all ok. It also has a full dash dodger cage, ohlin coilovers, 2 way lsd and a few other bits i have forgotten at the mo.

Compression test is a must from what ive read so far, but i dont class myself as compitent enought to do it knowing nothing about them. The car currently has no tax or mot so its not like i can drive it to have it checked.

I live in Ipswich and the car is also here.

Does anyone know of anyone local to me who could give it the once over? Its cheep enought that if it did go pop i could make money plus more breaking but would be a shame as ive always loved these cars. The horror stories are the worry!

Any help or advise would be great.

Cheers Stu

if he running close to 400bhp on stockk twins
sooner or later he is gonna blow the motor or the turbos for sure
the most u ever wana go on stock twins is about 325ish
thats already a lot for stock twins

It is very unlikely to be running anywhere near 400hp if its on standard twins.

More than likely it is closer to 300hp and tbh along with a compression test also you really want: proof of rebuild (if it was done in japan then its unlikely he will have it), and also the pfc mapped by a uk tuner as fuel is different over here. What sort of milage does the car have ?

If it was me i would want to be transported to one of the recognised uk tuners for a compression test/health check really before i parted with my hard earned obviously with the price of transportation taken off the purchase price, although the price of the health check is probably for you to stump up.

without dyno proof figures are pub talk imo.

With that said a 300hp rx7 does feel very very quick if you have been in 400hp evo company imo

It is very possible to be running around the 400 mark on stock twins.... think the UK record is something like 390, but the thing is the turbos don\'t last long! What boost pressure is he running? as 0.9 bar is good for about 330-350 depending on the maping, condition of the engine & supporting mods! But another thing to remember is the Fuel octain: Japan have 100 ron, UK 98ron & USA 91 ron so jap figures are going to be better than the other two.... it\'s surprising how much you can gain with a little more bang!
The other thing is, he could have something like Knitesport twins or B&R which are good for up to 450 at the limit ;)

Worth finding out what boost pressure he is running & an inspection of the turbos to see if they are stock or an aftermarket set of twins!

Ahh sorry it\'s had new turbos. Have have no idea if they are stock tho. People have drummed it into me that they must be stock as theres not a chance getting that power unless it\'s a single. That\'s nice 2 no it\'s still a possibility. Im not sure on boost presure either. Will have a look tomorrow. The millage is 48k, was rebuilt at 40k. If I said he wants 1500quid would it be worth a gamble? Im thinking yes. These seam 2 vary so much in price even if the motor is knackered I\'m lookin 2500 for a rebuild? Would I still make my money back? Obviously that\'s worst case. I\'m aware of the jap fuel difference hence why I said it\'s not ideal. He took it 2 a place near London and had it compression tested etc when he got it and the bloke said it was spot on. Better compression than that of a brand new motor. I\'ll have 2 see what I think tomorrow. Any tips when I look?

Thanks for the replies so far and Will for givin me the heads up about the site! Lol!

Cheers Stu

For £1500 its a steal mate and worth it all day long.

For £1500 i wouldnt do much else except go to the bank and pay the man.

With that said if he is only asking that tiny amount for it then i would take everything he said with a pinch of salt, or is that just my own sceptism.

the record for stock twins in the UK is 370whp which is 450bhp at the flywheel at 20psi of boost, the record in the US is 400whp at 21psi

theres a couple of people who run 400bhp on stock twins and they have lasted.

You are on borrowed time at 400bhp but they can run at that power for a bit.

im running mine at 17psi everyday and on 850/850 im using 87% inj duty which is about 385bhp, need to get myself a proper boost controller to turn it back up to 20psi like before.....though how long the turbos last is anyones guess

Is this a dyno figure Toast?

Not doubting or anything just contemplating 850 primaries myself and wonder to their limits but 87% duty @ 380+hp is what i wanted to hear but theoretical outputs do not assure me tbh.

any ideas who did the compression test?
Jit? powergains?
worth finding out if what he sais is true but £1500 given it is clean then go for it and get it rebuilt if needs be :)
still pretty cheap.

not off a dyno im afraid, just from calculations from previous times on the dyno.

ie i made 360bhp at 100% duty on stock injectors at 10.9afr

2800/3400=0.8235
360/0.8235=437
437x0.875=382bhp

i have gone above that when i was running 20psi+ 92% was the highest i think, but im still working on getting a proper boost controller so i can get back to those boost levels again because at 20psi the torque is much better

Well ive been and looked tonight, but not overly happy...

So i get there and have a look, body work is cool no rust whatsoever. Few slight bits that need paint, which he had said 2 me 2bh so not a problem. Only a few hundred quid worth. Now he opens the bonnet and i see lots of tuning goodies, inc a oil ctach tank so pretty happy with that. Oil looks a good colour but slight gunk in the coolant. Oh and it has a fukin stupid velside wing. That looks redonkulious!! He tries 2 turn it over battery is flat. Jumps it and within 3 seconds its running, not much smoke either so good start. Sits there idoling and does sound slightly lumpy. I put that down 2 the weather and the fact it hadnt been stood for a while. Maybe the flywheel as that was clanking a bit?

Anyway the test drive....

So he pulls out of his close, by this point it had been running for 5 mins or so on idol. Pulls out the road drives chilled for a couple of mins then puts his foot down. It launched. Lost grip and sideways which anyone who knows me will no i love! Lol! So goes a bit futher and does it again, this time it bogs and sputters, think it backfired aswel. Try again and the same. Says it down 2 the temp, and the power fc had gone into limp mode because its not quite hot. Takes a while 2 warm up? Could be down 2 fuel wash, but its got twin fuel pumps and a swirl pot in the boot so this should not happen. Was ok ish after then did the same again. Im not convinced...

Get it back 2 his house and lets it cool then off. I asked 2 start it again and it did no probs, so happy with that. Other than that, the car seamed ok, BUT the engine obviously is a big concern for me. He said its due a service, not had 1 for a year or so, but its only done 80 miles since the mot. That was a while ago.

What are your thoughts people?

Any help would be great.

Cheers Stu

sounds like it needs a good map or at least some fresh fuel in it and a wideband up its bum to make sure everything is ok.

still worth 1500 by the sound of it
Title: Looking for some help please guys...
Post by: STU13 B on November 16, 2010, 12:26:27 AM
So does the engine just sound like a gd map is needed? I think it sounds like fuel cut. Doesnt sound shot to you? Would a wideband not be connected with the fc?

See im unsure... i think i could get it cheeper! Lol!

As toaster said a good tune and fresh fuel should sort that out. Either way its a no brainer for that price worse thing that can happen you break it and make more than you paid for it.

sounds to me like it\'s hitting fuel cut! Nothing drastick, but a symptom of running a turbo car in cold weather! If you get a chance to go out again, set the Commander to read Injector duty, and if it boggs down again, make a note at what RPM & what the injector duty is... more than likely it will be around the 5k rpm when the second turbo comes fully online, and if the Inj duty reaches 100% then there is your problem, back off the boost pressure & take it to get tuned on UK fuel ;)

I did wonder about fuel cut as it used to do simular all be it more savage in my s14a before i had it mapped. The problem with that is everyone is millage away from Ipswich, gona have 2 do it tho as i dont want half measures. Just a bit of hastle but hopefully it will be worth it. If not there will be lots of parts coming up forsale soon! Lol! I got it for 1250 in the end. I will be givin him his plate back which is worth 250. Hes payin the fees etc, but not til i mot it. Pick it up mid december and it wont be on the road til the new year. Prob feb time. Gona sell my s14a and buy a dirty diesel 2 run around in til then.

Im goin 2 have another look sat in the day so will get a few pics then. Looks cool bar the gay wing, which will be going straight away. Any idea what velsides are worth?

Cheers guys, hopefully its a peach. Im normally the guy if i was 2 fall into a bucket of boobs id come out stucking my thumb!

Ill book it in to either reworx or haywards for a health check, if thats ok a full service and a new map. What do you think that little lot will cost? Any perferance of company? Out of those 2?

Then really its just a case of different wheels and some kind of rear spoiler. Paint can stay how it is for a bit, its not 2 bad. Rest of it should be good to go.

I keep seeing loads of threads with different sizing and offsets for wheels. Whats ideal for a RX7 in 17 or 18"? I would have to get 9j at the least. My S14a, can have a et12 with only minor rolling, i keep seeing et40 etc so getting a bit confused.

Well, personally I\'d also put in a recommendation for Super 7 near Brighton if you\'re willing to travel. Do everything that needs doing to rotaries, and also offering mapping services now, too. Not to imply there\'s anything wrong with RE Worx or Carl\'s services, just giving you another option :)

Stock FD offset is +50, which is clearly extraordinarily homosexual :( You can get away with really quite big wheels on the back with quite a lot lower offset with just an arch roll...mine have ended up ~ET25 with 265 tyres (17s) for example. It\'s trickier going massive wheel/tiny offset on the front cos of lock scrubbage and that, and you really don\'t want to scrub the arch liner too much because then the next thing is it\'ll scrub through the wiring loom that runs through the top of the arch .

Most common opinion is that 18s are as big as you want to go before it seriously starts to compromise handling and ride. My personal preference is to 17s FWIW

Hope this helps, and hope the car turns out to be a peach rather than errrr....a fruit that\'s not as nice as a peach? Prune? Grapefruit? Arthichoke? well, whatever :Laugh

Haha, yeah that wing is coming straight off. So if anyone wants one (no idea why you would lol) but its gona be here. If not ill put it on a fire and record it so you can have a laugh! Lol!

Cheers mate, hadnt seen super 7, im gona send all 3 companies an email with what i want and see what they say. I dont mind goin 2 any of them as it will be on a trailer anyway.

Yeah your not wrong, the rear wheels are well inside the arch, look lost. Shame really as they are 8j. U would think they would try a bit harder. My 200sx standard wheels are +40 and even with a 20mm spacer still looks weak. They are 6.5j running a 205. U can imagine how shocking they are!

Haha, any of those. Im feeling fairly optimistic with it, even if its not a gd engine, a rebuild would still be worth it as i know that the rest of the car is good. Plus with all the other tuning stuff i will of saved myself a fortune.

Roll on mid December!!

Was gonna say! Mine\'s pootled around for a year plus on that now, and is running just fine! That\'s at the fly though, not wheels..

I think you\'ve seen the dyno at 367 at 0.8 bar with it\'s ignition issue (you\'d put it up on your 200mph build thread), but there\'s a bigger one somewhere around at 1 bar if I can did it out as the 367 was conservative mapping due to the ignition..

Still, I\'m guessing it can\'t be great on the twins though, but hey, so long as they don\'t spit fins into the engine and mangle the plates etc, I can swap them for cheaper than buying a single if they do go pop!! :)

Hi all,

Thought id do a little update of how im getting on with the rx7.

Basicly things where put on hold for mot due to xmas and lack of money but i have been slowing getting it ready. I have stripped the rear due to lots of water in the boot because of the gay spoiler leaking. I have got rid of that, and while i look for a new boot lid i have covered the holes the best way i could lol! Hopefully that stops the leaking for now.

Mot is booked for friday but i still have a fair bit to do, the fuel tank in the boot needs mounting as shockingly it never has been, and the wiring needs a lot of tidying, its basicly just been dumped in! Also i need to get a gel battery and mount that. The ford one is a temp so i can run it for now. Only thing im concered about is the brakes but ill see how it goes before i spend the money on new ones.

Anyway a few pics below...

Looks better with a bare arse mate. Not sure I like the single wiper conversion though (reminds me of a ..... Fiat Uno I used to have). Keep us updated on how the MOT goes.

The more i look at it, the sleeker it looks. Just needs a nice set of rims to finish it off, and paint but not so fussed with that at the mo. Yeah i know what u mean, its how i brought it and 2bh its the least of my worries at the minute lol! Ill sort that in time, i just cant wait to get it sorted and drive it. Not even been down the road in it yet! Ill update Friday, hopefully with some good news.

Yeah mate, didnt sell tho. Will be back up sunday, or unfortunately broken for bits. I want a reliable drift car (If there is such a thing) and dont want to worry about the rx7 going pop time after time. Way 2 many horror storys after a rebuild that i keep reading.
