Title: Upsetting
Post by: jetpilot on November 13, 2010, 09:26:32 AM
I am sure a few are aware of the recent events during our commemoration of our valiant soldiers who gave their lives so this country could be free, during varying wars but mainly WW1 & WW2, ironically enough stopping the man responsible for the biggest religious genocide in recent years. Who knows what this country would be like now had he won his fight!

If your not sure what i am talking about check here

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/8126357/Muslims-clash-with-police-after-burning-poppy-in-anti-Armistice-Day-protest.html

Banners with "british soldiers burn in hell" amongst others were banded about!

Let alone the double standards that are involved in this protest (i.e what would happen if a christian did that in a muslim country) i am absolutely stunned that any of these protesters are allowed to remain in this country, british born or not!

They are more than happy to live here in the associated freedom that this country brings, freedom that is bought about by these very soldiers they condemn and in my view, whilst ever it is seen that these actions are without penalty this country opens itself up to an increasing "mass" of extremists who know they can do what they like!

I am aware its a minority before anyone flames me, but that minority must be stamped out before it becomes a majority!

Each and everyone of those protesters should be immediately deported (british or not) to a country where there Muslim law rules which they support, so they can sit their in fear and suppression, possibly told to fight for their cause. Not in their comfy, heated house where they have the freedom to do as they please!

This is where it all gets messed up, some guy in America threatens to burn the Koran and there is international up roar. But Muslims just get on and do what they what with little reprieve!

A friend of mine who fought in Afghanistan and lost friends over there was, well, en raged, is it any wonder their is racial hatred??

It\'s an unfortunate product of the freedom of expression that we enjoy in this country.  That\'s not to say it\'s a massive abuse of this privilege and if they feel this way they should reconsider where they live.  They really shouldn\'t be surprised by counter protests and hatred towards them.

At the end of day like you said we live in a Democracy and we have freedom of speech.
So things like this will happen, like what was going on in America with the attempted burning of the Koran, majority of people wont like it but this is the price you pay for freedom.

Like the Student protest when they started burning placards, we are allowed to protest, this why there was a second World war so we keep are rights to air our views and beliefs.

But I do think this group of Poppy burners were breaking the law with incitement to violence the timing and placing of the protest, the Police should have moved them on or arrested them.

Fair comment, but if we say anything against them, they are the first to complain. You cant have double standards, but we do!

Whichever way you look at it, this is unacceptable and should not be tolerated!

Completely agree. Something has to be done. But what? And by who? Lets face it there is no way the Government will go anywhere near the issue.

Have some discussions about this on FB, my opinion is that the police should be given more powers to deal with such concerns. If the group was causing harassment, which it was, they should have been told to move on or arrested until the memorials were over.

Looking into the threads on FB there were racists comments from all sides and it sadly shows that bigotry will always exist, in the wider world i think the thoughts of peace are lost as it will never happen. Sad but true.

As for the small group of "fanatics" they should be identified and then their backgrounds looked into, since they hate the country so much any and all benefits must be stopped for them, and any help provided should be rescinded.

I will always argue the free right of expression because I think that\'s a fundamental part of what makes our country great and a model of freedom for the world to envy. But then, sometimes you have to think that some people just need to have the living fduk kicked out of them

I totally agree that our soldiers should be respected for what they have done for this country. It is because of our soldiers that we sleep without any fear at night and we have the confidence in doing things freely in our country. It is my personal opinion that they (the soldiers) have experienced this hatred towards them due the wrong and right (there are convincing arguments on each side) decisions of the Politicians. I think these demonstrators should go and "peacefully" protest in front of the parliament not before our beloved soldiers. I don\'t agree with the poppy burning scene. It is completely unacceptable.

As mentioned above, we live in a free country which is not only independent but also guarantees human rights along with the freedom of expression. It is because of the Freedom of Expression that those people demonstrated the way they did (completely unacceptable manner) and also its a product of Freedom of expression that a Racially motivated Political Party (BNP) is allowed to campaign against non white British people.... Sometime we all have to pay price for the freedom of expression :(

I don\'t support any form of actions which hurts the human feelings

Again i agree with Nik that i love this country for its envious democracy but i just cannot see that this sort of racism would be tolerated ten/twenty years ago. Democracy and freedom of speech is one thing but racism is a punishable offence in this country and if what i saw in the papers is not racial incitement then i clearly dont understand the laws well enough.

If i went out into Newcastle city centre tomorrow with big banners screaming KILL MUSLIM EXTREMISTS then i expect i would be banged up sharpish.

Human right activists have ruined this country imo and make a pretty penny doing so!!!.

What I find odd is that no one turned up to object to the protest.  Possibly because they had more decency than to desecrate the memories of the Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen that took the decision to defend our freedom and put their life on the line to ensure that this country is a safe place where you can express your opinions, legitimately protest and live their life free from persecution.

It was George Orwell who said "Good men sleep soundly in their beds because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."  Good people need to remember that!

Having fought in Gulf War 1 and 2 and have continued to be at the front line since I joined the military over 22 years ago I find it so utterly disgusting that anyone or any group of people should be allowed to burn the poppy that symbolized so many courageous and valiant military personnel that gave their lives during the war years. What I and many others have experienced is just a tiny fraction in relation to what they went through to give this Country its freedom and to have a democracy that enables every single person to express a freedom of speech and respected human rights.  That very freedom is what makes Great Britain so very \'Great\' and must continue to be so but the line simply must be drawn when outrageous acts of incitement against our troops is clearly unacceptable and breaking the law.  The law has to change, to burn the poppy is like spitting in our all faces and should never have ever been allowed to happen in the first place and most definitely have led to convictions.  The changes this Country (and that of the World) has gone through over the past decade in our cultural society is immense but we must remain resolute in maintaining our human rights but the law must come down hard on those that continue to abuse and incite racial hatred in any form.

But the law doesnt come down hard on anyone it would seem! And to be frank, i wouldnt want to see tax payers monies going towards the upkeep of said minorities in prison!

I think the big issue for me is, if you cant respect this countries traditions, you simply shouldnt be here!

Perhaps these muslim extremists would have preferred Hitler to have won, with his outrageous attitude towards religions it wouldnt surprise me if Muslim would have been next on his list! Trouble is those thick tw*ts dont even realise that!

The laws regarding incitement must be reviewed and changed, currently it seems the gov are simply reluctant to cause any outrage by doing so. Without these changes you will continue to see what we saw with the poppy burning and the abuse of returning soldiers from abroad.

Also the communities involved with those "individuals" need to show them that their opinion is not that of the whole community, and until they do there will be no drastic change sadly.

I have a very simplistic view on this buddy, although i know its not as clear cut!

I dont care if they are British Nationals, i am sure some of them are! But you shouldnt be allowed to benefit from all this country has to offer yet protest against its heritage and beliefs and history!

I dont think what they did is any worse than treason to be fair and why should deportation be a problem, they obviously have no regard or respect for this country so why should we for them, british national or not!

This is the point of the thread, show no respect and we give no respect! There is no political correctness from them so why should we be?

I dont condone what some muslims are doing at all with regard to the poppy burnings and the banners all but they are doing it for a reason.

Our troops sent in by our former prime minister are in their motherlands and have killed tens of thousands maybe more innocent civilians (their people.) over the recent years.

There is bound to be some kind of retort. Do us thoroughbread white proud british citizens expect all (or any) 1st, 2nd and 3rd Gen (pun) british muslims to just sit back and watch as UK/US troops illegally smash through land they were brought up in, killing many thousands of innocent civilians as they go in areas they grew up and where large parts of their families/friends still reside.

symbolic acts like this are not what we should be worrying about. what we should be doing is making efforts to stop the radicalising of young british muslims. they do have quite a bit to be annoyed about.

It doesnt matter where they are from or belong we are killing their people. They are protesting. If i lived in beijing

They are not doing it because they are bored or evil. their people are being killed on daily basis they have a small voice and are not represented in the media. they do have quite a bit to be annoyed about.

Our troops are killing thier people in a (not that it matters( illegal)) war and the poppy symbolises Our troops........ who..... are killing their people. thats why they are doing it. regardless of where they are from or "belong".

My EDL "friends" do not have the same opinion as me.

Not to cause offence but if our troops are over there illegally killing their people, then surely when they attacked the twin towers, pentagon in 9/11 etc they were illegally attacking and murdering american families? And also the attack in this country, admittedly by uk citizens but trained in afghanistan? Etc. Freedom of speech is a huge pain in the arse and honestly this country could do with a dictator like they have in china to sort all of this shiv out! If people couldn\'t get along then they either sort it out or they disappear. We wouldn\'t have immigration problems etc would we?

Our soldiers are over their following orders by the government so burning something that represents remembrance for our lost heroes is disgusting, if they want to make a statement then They should burn a government type symbols as it is the governments choice on what this country does. And even possibly burn an MP, most people dislike them? Haha

Dr Schnitzel, although i agree in some part your view or sympathy its inherintely flawed!

The poppy in its essence was formed long before the war in "their" countries, so these idiots are protesting against British soldiers that died before you or i was born. Soldiers that gave their lives to keep this country out of the hands of one of the men most responsible for religious genecide the modern world has perhaps seen, have you heard of Hitler??

They are happy to kick back and receive all the benefits this country has to offer, dole cheques, being able to sleep safe and sound, warm paid for houses, health care, education, true freedom of speech.....the list just goes on and on!

But they are happy to protest at how we keep this country safe now and in the past?

I ask you one question, if me or you walked into a muslim filled country/town and burnt say a Koran at one of their important events, do you think a £50 fine is all we would receive??

I know it is to commerate the men lost in ww1 and 2 but it\'s also a symbol now for the men and women lost recently.

I agree with the things you are saying totally but if I were to out my full opinion on here about these current things the site would require a new server to host my response!

As for your last point, I\'m sure we would first receive a stoning then 50,000 lashes, (very painful) various body parts cur off etc. Starting with our most prized parts.

To a muslim a poppy= uk troops...it is the symbol which they had destroyed in anger. It cares not to them that grandad killed a few germans back in the day. I assume their emotion lies with more current events.

I know all about WW2 im sure the muslims do not appreciate the depth of emotion it has with british, similar to how we cant fully appreciate any depiction/sketch of the prophet moham\'ed (i still dont get that one) but it exists.

Of course we wouldnt get a 50 quid fine, we would have a much heavier (death etc) penalty. Our society is different. for better or worse its the society we live in. its a society some muslims moved away from. freedom of speech, I think the 50 pound was more a strategic (diffusion) move to stop protest escalating. I feel one of these EDL marches will/could turn very nasty one day and some kind of extradition or custodial sentence may escalate the situation and make others perpetrators martyrs come out the woodwork (which some will find a desirable status). although it is such an unfeasibly small fine, a Uk citizen would probably get an affray charge. It in a way could help. we dont want civil war / riots on the streets. again very difficult decisions here we need to be very careful.

Its the likes of hook man and that other ...... who wants a Shirah state in the uk that should be deported. people who stir racial hatred.

Yeah british citizens of muslim country descent, do get the benefits we do. however im not sure on the statistics.. but have you ever seen a smack head, alcoholic, dead beat, doley, single parent family etc, muslim family? I have never seen one in the north west although im sure there are some. mostly they are small business owners and they work \'ard.?? i dont know i have seen no pie charts.

at the end of the day there is some very angry people of muslim descent, young undereducated, irrational and emotional on both sides.. .... will and is happening. How its dealt with needs extreme care.

Think about this. The symbolic gesture of the poppy burning may stir a larger intrest than a terrorist attack in the UK where people die. Like the Mo\' sketch created a "HUGE" stir

Grant regarding the Twin Towers which was an illegal attack on a country ( we dont live in.) the fatalities of 3000 represent a tiny fraction of how many civilians we have taken out over the past 8 or so years in iraq afghan. there was a very interesting documnetary on the BBC which reported just that. It also highlighted how we play this down in the media. our 10,000 soldiers dead are much more important than the 20,000 to 100,000 (i cant remember the figs) civilians laid slain in far away lands.

At the end of the day "who started it???"

it gets that childish

The only result is huge amounts of bloodshed on both sides with no real solution in sight in our lifetime.

Dr S, in a way i couldnt agree more in some ways! I dont even think out troops should be in Afghanistan, we blindly followed the USA and think its a war we will never win.

Who started it, well, The Twin Towers was the reason we went to Afghanistan in force!

We had this whole discussion at work yesterday! I am unaware of the figures for genuine civilian casualties because of our interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan, however, we have at no point deliberately set out to kill innocent people. The attacks on the twin towers and london were calculated with one intent, to kill innocent people, men, women and children.

Our troops whether be that of ww1, 2 or our current wars have joined up and gone to these places all knowing that death could be on the cards, they have all been prepared to lay down their lives for the benefit of this country, which is the same as any soldier fighting against them, so do i feel sympathy that their brothers, friends have been killed in battle....No. Have they lost innocent family members etc, i doubt that massively. However, it was a day to remember the brave men that fought for us!

The burning of the poppy had none of this thought behind it buddy, it was done to shock, it was done to offend, if there was an intelligent thought behind it i would be incredibly surprised and it is steeped in irony because of the mentioned points in the thread before and the fact a paultry fine was handed out basically gives acceptance to doing whatever you like and getting away with it!

Its all about reversed priorities, i do not lie when i say i had a friend fined £80 for throwing a cig butt out a car window.

Sit back and watch the backlash now, this will only enrage the general populous and they are only making a rod for their own backs doing such things and my view is, if they hate this country that much, well, it speaks for itself!

Some interesting points on both sides of the fence here. Grant, I feel you\'ve let yourself down a bit there advocating that dictatorship is an answer to the inconvenience of people having opinions different to your own lol . Mr Pilot, essentially I understand the point but you\'re incorrect to state the poppy pre-dates problems in Afghanistan and other predominantly Muslim countries on, the Crusades for example were rather popular a while before WWI, and even more recently...after all Sherlock Holmes\' mate Dr Watson was wounded in the Afghan wars by a jezail bullet

The problem is certainly not a recent one, though the means of lodging protest by crashing airliners is obviously something denied to previous generations. The problem isnt necessarily one of religion or cultural difference, it\'s simply one of human intrasigence and mob mentality. Doesn\'t really matter the lines along which herd culture is stimulated, humans exist to advantage themselves at the expense of those around them.

I think it goes to show how good a forum this can be, a delicate subject discussed and some valid opinions!

Whatever the origins of the British Empire and our conquering past etc i just think the irony behind this is why there is such outrage at the punishment.

Its political correctness gone mad, everyday we are told, you cant be biased, you must accept, multi culturism works, you cant wear crosses at work and apparently now employers have the right to ask you to remove poppies!

However, it seems as a "minority" you are not bound to these criteria, you can do what you want with little or no punishment because you are the "minority".

We have seen enough to know that if a white british nationalist went to a muslim event where they honoured their dead and did something equally as offensive the punishment would far extend a £50 fine. We can discuss the logistics and reasons for the motives till we are blue in the face, but the above fact remains and i think this is what upsets people the most.

One rule for one and one for another.

The Soviets tried it in the 80s, and look how well that turned out...

Interesting factoid: In Rambo 3, the American general is captured by the Soviets and is giving his captor a bollocking by saying, (paraphrasing here) "The simple fact is you didn\'t do you\'re homework, you should know these people would rather fight and die than surrender."

Also, at the end credits, the film is, "Dedicated to the gallant people of Afghanistan"

Define irony!!!

One thing that strikes me as kind of strange is there is a belief that the world trade centre thing was the first act. I have not looked into the supposed reasons why these people decided to do this. i will when i get some time. but do you think maybe US had repressed or killed middle eastern people before this act?....It is never spoken of.

So lets say this was the first "act" i.e they started it... Why then did they/we destroy /attack and kill many many civilians in Iraq destroyed the Iraq cities. We found no WMDs and we gave Mr. Huss a fair trial then publicly hung him... Ha..Its crazy.

What has Iraq got to do with anything to do with 9/11?

Dont the US know that the only people who can attack their country are currently living in the US watching as them tear though Afghan...we take areas of afhan, move away then 3 months later the area is riddled with explosives..then the cycle starts again...it is an impossible war...if it really a war at all...and troops will wind down and they will just give up....Oh but i remember now.....its just about the oil...we dont really need to be there anymore.

(scarcastic) glad that when we left Iraq we set up a prosperous democracy which is hitting the news for the speed of recovery..Its going to be the new Dubai..well done guys great job!!!

Do me a favour guys. watch the news on Libiya as ive been doing for the past week as it was the only english channel i could get in my hotel... Do you think the pictures in the reports are missing the vital parts of the story that is supposed to be happening there.

Its either poor poor poor journalism or something fishy is going on.. or am i going mad?

The reason that Al Qaeda have been bombing Western Targets and generally dislike the West is that they resented the deployment of Coalition Troops to Saudi Arabia, the country which has the place of pilgrimage for Muslims, during the first Gulf War.  Particularly given the same Western Nation\'s support for Israel.  They see this a violation of their sacred locations and an offence against Allah.

The World Trade Centre wasn\'t even the first act of terrorism they committed, they attacked the same building in 1993.  However the events of September the 11th 1991 were an exceptional event and with the explosion of 24 hour news media it was easily carried around the world and we were saturated with the story constantly through multiple media outlets.

Afghanistan was only attacked because it was where Al Qaeda were basing their operations from and the Taliban Regime were supporting them.  The Contemporary US administration saw themselves literally as "Team America: World Police" and took a Unilateral Police Action to eliminate an area where Al Qaeda could operate.  The reason we are there now is to actually make the nation into a functioning part of the international community and it is beholden upon us to do so after deposing the previous regime, it\'s an ugly place and we shouldn\'t have gone there in the first place, but we\'re there now and we need to leave it in a state where it can look after itself.  There will not be a point where we can realistically say "We\'ve beaten the Taliban!" They\'re not an enemy like we encountered during WWII where we will see their formal surrender, or the Cold War where their system of government will lead to the fundamental collapse of their regime.  However that\'s not to say we should not work to marginalise their influence to such an extent that they\'re negligible and that the regular people of Afghanistan are able to live in a free and fair society.

Going into Iraq to find WMDs was wrong, the intelligence was not conclusive but I think what they have now is better than before, and I\'ve asked Iraqis and they agree.  Make no mistake Saddam Hussein was a nasty man and living in his Iraq was not a nice place for ordinary people.  It\'s a long way from being perfect, but it\'s a lot better than it was.

My personal feeling is that we went to Iraq because the US wanted to finish the job it should have finished in 1991.

Regardless, we are now into the political and diplomatic machinations of the conflicts where we have British Armed Forces Deployed to.

Originally this was about the acts of Muslim Extremists in burning Poppies at a Remembrance Day ceremony.

I am currently serving as a Royal Navy Officer in the Submarine Service, I\'ve been an Officer in the RN (in the surface fleet) for the last six and a bit years and I have served in Iraq and in support of operations in Afghanistan, as well as Operations in UK waters.  The politics of the situation are not a consideration of the Soldiers, Sailors or Airmen serving in conflict theatres.  We are there trying to make sure we achieve our mission and get everyone home safe.  I look upon Remembrance Day as a time to remember the ones we didn\'t get home safe.  They weren\'t there because they wanted to be, they were doing their job and their job got them killed.

Quote from: BlitzBoy;726479At the end of day like you said we live in a Democracy and we have freedom of speech.

Freedom of speech is the freedom to speak freely without censorship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship) or limitation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limitation), or both. The synonymous term freedom of expression  is sometimes used to indicate not only freedom of verbal speech but any  act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas,  regardless of the medium used. In practice, the right to freedom of  speech is not absolute in any country and the right is commonly subject  to limitations, such as on "hate speech (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech)".
