Title: Water in spare wheel well
Post by: Big Al on November 08, 2010, 01:14:20 AM
Not sure what to call it but well seems to be appropriate. Had to use my spare today and noticed a lot of water in there.
Easy option would be drilling a hole in it, but not really what I want to do. So any ideas where this water could be coming from please ?
Boot carpet is dry

Is there no rubber bung in the bottom?

Hi Brett,

No bung at all.. I would prefer if possible,  finding the leak rather than drilling a hole to sort it.

Al, three main culprits. Spoiler mounts are most likely, they can let in loads of water. The rubber screen trim can let in water when they shrink/perish though hopefully yours should be OK cos it\'s such a recent car (it\'s the most expensive and aggravating to fix). The rubber grommets where the rear lights harness and that goes through the rear metalwork can let water through. Easiest way to diagnose is remove all the interior bootlid trim and spray a hose across it to see where the water gets in Bet it\'s spoiler mounts....

Thanks Nik, good advice, I\'ll check those all out next weekend when I can see what I\'m doing

I\'m in the same position and I\'m buggered if I can find it.
Haven\'t done the actually spraying water on test yet, but I\'ve had the boot plastics out and can\'t see any telltale water marks.
Rear lights don\'t seem to have any leaks coming through, and there\'s no rear spoiler on my car :(
Driving me nuts!
I think it must be the boot seal.
Going to pull ALL the boot trim and see what I can see.

Thanks Blitz..... was tempted to drill it for a while, no chance now. I will just have to find the leak instead.

Well, I\'ve got all the plastics out from the rear arches backwarsd, and I still can\'t find the damn thing!

Tempted to stick some food dye in some water and pour it all over.
It\'s not easy on a white car :(

Found the little fecker!

Aftermarket fog light install into rear fog! Time to pump it full of silicone.
Also had a small drip around one of the rear light cover things - the plastic triangles that butt up to the rear lights that you see when you open the boot - I\'d forgotten to put the screw back in the front hole of the left hand side one - it was dripping through the hole!

Good news SiH,
I need to get the plastics off of mine to have a good look at whats going on..... will certainly post any leaks ,  if they are different from the one you found.

Title: Got it !!!!!

Thanks to Niks excellent advice and SiH\'s photo I found the leak which was the same as SiH had found. ( my photo would be the same apart from a blue paint and a much thinner wire?? !!! )
Seems that pulling a wire through this grommet for a feed to make a rear fog light, had actally dislodged it. Allowing a surprising amount of water to get into the aptly named well.
Now replaced with a good blob of silicone as it wouldn\'t fit properly again.
So thanks guys for your continued help in understanding my car....... this is a great club :cheers

Awesome! I\'m not alone then!
I\'ll put uip photos of my repair - it\'s not pretty, but it\'s \'belt and braces\'! :D

I used some hi mod silicone (the Loctite stuff you use to put an FD sump on :D), a zip tie, and some self amalgamating tape! :D

I think im in the same boat, went down to my car as its been sat still for nearly 3 months only to find a small puddle in the well. Its wet on the aerial side of the car so im gonna guess its the same cause of your leak.
