hi,
i\'ve just purchased a 3rd gen efini twin-turbo (it\'s amazing!!) and have tried to change the steering wheel.
the problem is, momo only do a boss kit for the FC. i\'ve been told that that boss kit is ok, it\'s just a bit fiddly to install. however when i took the standard wheel off and tried to fit the boss there seemed to be too many problems (mainly the horn connector), basically it wasn\'t as easy as i thought.
has anyone else done this with any success?
any info would be appreciated,
cheers
I know there are a few guys who have made the boss fit with the original fd horn system. I had one on my old fd and removed all the original Mazda horn press system and just connected a push switch on my center consul via the original horn wires (cant remember which colours to use otherwise i tell you).
thanks for your help jet, i think i\'ll probably do what you did with the horn.
but i ran into problems straight away. how much of the original steering wheel assembly do i have to take off?
I have not got my car now, so its from memory. There is a plastic thing which rotates with the wheel, with a three pin connector on it. This needs to be removed so there is nothing apart from the spline sticking out. Then splice into the wires at the left over connector for your horn, i cant remember the colours though, all ii can remember is you use two of them. Hope that helps.
i have fitted the momo boss and stearing wheel to my fd3 you have to do a little butchering, does the boss you have have a hole in where the wires can go through ?
yep, the boss has a hole for the wires to go through. jetpilot said to the remove the plastic thingy- what is that for? is it to stop the indicators after turning?
i haven\'t had time to try fitting the wheel since the first time (work, work, work.....:( ), so if you can advise which wires go where, would be appreciated.
what size wheel do you have?
shame you dont live closer or i would help you do it is a hard one to explain in text and i didnt take pics at the time
hi,
sorted out my boost problem now (mmmmm... turbo!!) so it\'s back to the steering wheel!
my mechanic is convinced i have something missing from my boss kit, so i\'ve taken a pic of it, is it all there??
I have cut/pasted from FDUK forum:
"I am pleased to have found a steering wheel adapter than makes the installation of a Momo, Sparco or other such steering wheel a simple bolt on job for US Spec air bag equipped 93-95 RX7s.
A couple of years ago I installed a Momo steering wheel on my \'92 Miata and loved it. I purchased a custom adapter from "Finish Line Performance" that is designed specifically for the air bag equipped 1st generation Miata. It comes with proper wiring to make the air bag warning light not go on and the horn connection a true plug and play experience. The adapter also cancels the turn signal perfectly.
I wanted to put a Momo Steering Wheel on my FD also and I was remarking at how the steering wheel setup on the two cars appear indentical. So I took a gamble and purchased the same hub adapter I used for my Miata and it works PERFECTLY. No air bag light, horn works fine, turn signals cancel, location is perfect and no cutting wires or modifications at all. The whole install took 20 minutes at a liesurely pace.
Here is a link to the website that sells it. You want the \'90-\'97 Miata steering wheel hub adapter:

Maybe you can be the first to try it here. It was only posted recently.
It is possible to use the FC hub on the FD, but sorting the horn is tricky. I know because I did it about a year ago. If you want any information on my installation let me know as I wrote an article on it.
Regards
Neil
