Title: RX7 engines, particularly earlier ones...
Post by: fall-apart-dave on November 01, 2010, 04:02:00 PM
Hey guys.

I\'m building a street sleeper Morris Minor, and after much thought, have decided I want to use a rotary engine.

I\'m given to understand the 12A motor is a carb\'d engine, and a swap would be relatively straight forward (I plan to also use the RX7 gearbox).

However, looking around, good 12A motors seem hard to find, as do complete cars with the engine in. I have seen a few 13B engined motors around for sale in fairly good condition though. How complicated are the electrickery on the earlier EFI motors? I\'m an electronics engineer by trade, but don\'t want to buy a complete slightly later car to break only to find that there are 17 boxes all over the place with all sorts of crap to sort out on them.

Also, what are the tuning options on the earlier motors? Can anyone offer any sound advice?

Cheers

Dave

Hi Dave,
I guess you\'re after the first thing that usually gets sold off any scrapper so the attached list of 1st Generation Cars breaking (12A Engine) may be of limited use to you.

The other approach would be to try one of the specialists, Steve Garbutt at Hayward North Doncaster is extremely helpful. There\'s Tim at RX Motors Dorset, Era de Clerk in Farnborough area, Pip Gardner at WGT Cheshire, Jimmy\'s in Norwich Area. (Anyone I\'ve missed shout now).
They might be able to source a 1st Gen engine/box for you and most of them will give a rebuild/porting service if you wanted to go down that route. Check out their ads either on here or on Google. I can sort any phone Nos you can\'t find.

Otherwise be patient and keep on the bay....trouble there is you don\'t always know what you\'re getting.

I\'m not a performance man (just a street guy) but there are others on here who will be pleased to advise I\'m sure.

If your building a rotor go for the 13b option. 12a parts are getting harder to source and the 13b was used on a lot more recent cars. You should be able to pickup a TII 13b (4 port 13b) without too much hassle (Tim at RXmotors usually has them). Its cheaper than the FD 13b and the Rx8 renisis (13b) engine. Plus you can start with the N/A setup and have the option of going turbo later on. The 6 port version (NA) is also available, but can\'t be turbo\'d as easily (the one I have).

You can get lots of bits for them and the 2nd gen engines where EFI already.

Thanks for the help guys!

How complicated is the EFI setup on the 13B motors? Am I going to end up with a bonnet full of spagetti and boxes full of the sweepings from an electronics shop dotted about the place? How difficult is the removal of a turn key 13b motor?

They aren\'t too hard to remove with all the bits attached (bar gear box). There are some very neat EFI engines on ausrotary and rx7club (1st gen section)
