Title: DON\'S 1st GEN PURCHASE
Post by: don wyatt on October 26, 2010, 06:23:06 PM
Hi chaps,
I have officially arrived in the RX 7Heaven.
Went to look at TMX today.and here is the run down on the car.

She is Solid, no rot, no repairs EVER, tiny bit of surface on the return lips of the rear arches, and thats about it. A few cosmetics to sort out, the lady owner has pushed the front bumper in about 1.5 inches on one side, so bodyshop job, and there are two small dings, one on the o/s wing top, one on the bonnet.

The interior is generally very good, with a couple of areas needing a tidy, like one of the centre air vents, the vanes have collapsed, that sort of thing, carpets and seats are a little grubby, and I want PERFECTION lads, so its seats out and a major clean up, to the whole cabin. Paintwork is very good, the car has been garaged all its life.
She is a genuine, 1 lady owner, all mots evident, 53k on the clock, (just over 2000 miles each year). not a great deal of history, (the owners have a mechanic in the family who has serviced the car before each mot on a yearly basis). Original bill of sale, (very interesting this shows a earlier ist gen being traded in). Other paraphernalia comes with the car, cant wait to see this.
Engine is sweet, stainless exhaust sound good.
I am picking her up next week.
Conclusion. VERY HAPPY.
Stole the car at £850.00. Get this TAXED and MOTd, ready to go. he he.
happy bunny.
see pics if they load okay.

Fantastic news Don.... sounds a very good buy and at that price....... you did steal it!
The bumper is an easy repair but you need a good 2nd hand bumper bar from a breaker.
Great stuff.... well done!!

Your front bumper bash.
You may find it\'s just the bumper bracket that\'s folded & no damage to rest of bodywork?
If so easy to find off a scrapper.
£850 is a g8 price,virtually rot free,low mileage & a stainless exhaust.

I use that instant valay spray foam for interiors, works g8 & dose\'nt leave carpets soaking wet.

Your car should theorectically be a touch faster than standard,as it\'s likely all the emmissions junk went in the bin with the standard exhaust.

Fb\'s are good handling cars 50/50 weight distribution, very chuckable!

Its only on its second set of tyres, which still have plenty of tread, but they do look a bit weird, they are Goodyears, some type of cross hatch tread.

Anyway someone gave me a link recently showing a 1st Gen, which had a lovely set of Goodyears I think they were, with white writing and a thin white band on the side walls, they were kin lovely. Whether I keep Tender blue or not, its getting a set of these, after polishing up the alloys.

Anyone know what tyres I am referring to ??

Don.

Not sure which tyres they are but I used Goodyears for many years and rate them very highly.

cant find that damn piccy of said tyres. someone sent me a pic of a very sweet looking 7 and it had very nice looking wheels and tyres. they had raised white lettering, and im sure a thin white wall band. looked really tasty.

I have done a quick search on goodyears and michelins but can find them.

so if this rings a bell with anyone please let me know.

What a steal Don, pleased for you mate. 53k is exact same as our Gus.

My Missus is a petrolhead though, Gus is technically her car. She\'s computerphobic though!

205 60 14 tyres are a bit hard to find now. Gus was running Goodyear NCT\'s at one bit, that might be what\'s on your car? Cross hatch tread. Out of production for yonks so check the production date stamp on the tyrewalls for old age.
We run BF Goodrich touring now, not least because the tyre profile matches the original Dunlops very closely and doesn\'t \'Balloon\' when seen from front or back like the NCT\'s did.

You said the bill of sale showed a previous 1st Gen trade Don? Any chance of seeing if the old car\'s Reg is on there? I\'d like to know if it\'s still on the register today.

Enjoy and keep us all posted.....Dave

Of course Dave, IO will be picking up the paper work middle next week, and will forward all the details of both vehicles.
Thanks for the Tyre info;

NOW,
this may sound completely crazy, and you guys will think Im some kind of nut, and I CAN assure you I am. I have owned many many classics, Im not a dealer, Im just a silly fool who buys, enjoys for a bit, gets bored and then sells for a loss.

Here\'s my thoughts. This car TMX, is undoubtedly a pretty scarce find, and I am considering two options;

OPTION 1.
Keep, lightly restore, show off a bit, and then sell once Im bored or see something completely different, which knowing me could even be a classic van.

OPTION 2.
This is where I am going to use the Forum to gauge interest, and again chaps, I hope you all do not mind me doing this, it WAS
not a plan, it IS not a plan, but i will consider selling it straight on into the club, without registering it in my name. Therefore giving a club member a chance to own and appreciate this fairly unique opportunity. I will not rule out putting on ebay at a later stage to open it up to others, but I think it fair to offer it to MRC members first, assuming I do decide on option 2. My decision will be based on the interest it gains.

So there we are chaps, If you are interested in the car, please get in touch, (this is, and I am 100% genuine) either by PM, email to donaldwyatt@msn.com or call me if you wish on 01622 816855. Here is for those who have not been up to date on my quest, the details of the car.

RX7 Gen 1, Series 3.
Gen 1 owner from new.
53.000 miles from new.
Tender Blue, Grey Interior
In Excellent NO rot condition.
Everything works as it should.
All MOTs, no advisories. NEVER SEEN A WELDER LET ALONE HIS TORCH
CURRENT MOT, CURRENT TAX
Garaged all it life.
No Mods
Just needs a clean and polish.
Only visible damage is;
front bumper pushed in one side about 1-1.5 inches.
two tiny dings on top of front 0/s wing, easy peasy sorted.
Interior all good of course, and all original.

Thats it chaps. I cannot offer you a viewing just yet, so if you are interested, get in touch with an OFFER, you all know what I paid, so ignore that and offer to what you would consider to be a fair price.
I will post offers without names attached so you all know whats what, and if I decide to let it go, I will provide details of the under bidder, assuming he/she is okay with that. I intend to do this fairly, and before making a decision to let it go, I will speak to those who have offered.

Questions welcomed.  all the best. Don.
(please bear in mind that I may keep the car, I have not yet decided ) :xconfused :2Confused:xconfused

Gary, Im near Tonbridge mate, a fair way from you tho :D

As said, Im thinking about it, basically if I can return a reasonable profit on the car, i will sell it on to a MRC member, who can love and cherish it as a one previous owner car.

Or, Im quite happy to keep it, if there isnt much interest. It then becomes a 2 owner vehicle, and I may change/alter a few things on it.

As the car stands it should be of interest to a club member given its status and originality ?

I would be looking at offers of to start at £1200, (even at £1500 it would be very cheap considering its history). So if anyone is genuinly interested get in touch. If not, I will enjoy it myself. :cool

Hi mate,

Im going to say what I know others are thinking.

You have popped up here with what seems like unbound enthusiasm for a car we all share a passion for. We have shared this with you and gotten excited for the fact you managed to get hold of a good version of a car most of of us already have.

Yet less than 24hours into \'ownership\' you are trying to turn the enthusiasm you have drummed up into a cheeky few hundred quid.

Recall your opening gambit:
Quote from: don wyatt;723281Hi chaps,
I have officially arrived in the RX 7Heaven.

I must say that this now makes you sound disingenuous as the \'heaven\' part is simply the realisation that you might make a few bucks?

If you do sell, what then? Clearly with no more RX7 you would have no place here so your short stay would appear to some to simply be a mugging, if you were to search for another, clearly you are a man after perfection and perhaps you stumble across another \'bargain\' would that be up for sale again?

My personal opinion is that you should own, drive and enjoy the car we all do and accept you got a bargain and let us be jealous of the fact, not try to deter from the great community spirit we have got here by offloading what seems to be a great car for a profit.

Just my 2c (0.9p)

I would say it\'s gone quiet \'cos we\'re all thinking...I for one went to sleep on it last night.
Ramon has put into words above what first flashed through my mind...use us and dump us.
But it\'s not quite like that is it Don? You\'ve got excited because you\'re sitting on a good few hundred quid profit instantly....and why not?
Here\'s the rub though, If you sell and buy another 1st Gen you\'re no better off...your profit has gone buying another motor for a realistic price. So if you do sell you\'ll then have to wave bye and look outside the club.
No, I think the opportunity fairy has tapped you on the shoulder and you should keep TMX for a while and ride along with us.
I think I know why you\'ve pushed the \'sell now\' suggestion out to the Forum...it\'s \'cos you\'re an excitable guy who wants things to be moving along all the time. I\'m the same really and once the idea struck, the urge to put the post up must have become overwhelming to you.
Anyway, as said, the profit can only be had once and I for one would think deffer it.

So the Magnificent Eight might drop back to the Magnificent Seven and if Chico says "Who was that Gringo riding with us", I\'ll say "Just some High Plains Drifter wanted company for a while; gone on a different trail now".
Then you\'ll hear \'Clip Clop\' (X7) fading into the distance as the Seven look for the next mission to help fight the oppressed and downtrodden.

Absolutely brilliant post , and so very true. I am still grinning as I hear the gringos guitars playing, and my cigar stub burns my lips. (god i love that movie).
look guys, dont take this the wrong way, that is so easy to do, Im not a money grabbing, quick profit merchant, use and abuse people type of person. Lets take the "ive sold TMX" version first, If I did this, and yes it would be quite sweet to gain a few pounds for once in my classic car life, but if I did this, I wouldnt simply disappear anyway, I belong to several club forums, and have a great relationship with so many folks in the classic car world. Please dont get up tight anyone, Please dont think I am or have been using anyone. I simply am excited about this little RX7, and am still looking forward to spending some cash on it, and showing off, if only to my friends at work !
However I truly LOVE all classics and am constantly  looking at something new, trust me please, I recentley purchased a 2CV Woody Estate, and extremely rare heap of tosh, and my wife nearly divorced me when I put that on the drive, so you see, Im just nuts on old cars. I also get a buzz, and believe me when I say this as it is true on my kids lives, I also get a buzz from being a good samaritan, where is the harm in letting like minded people benefit from your own good fortune. You know, if someone said to me, Hi Don, I have been looking for an RX7 for 10 years, its my dream, and I cant afford more than £1000, or £850, (which I what I am about to pay for the car) I would most likely say, Here you go, have this one.
Im not a greedy, disingenuous person at all, in fact those of you who may get to know me, will find that I am 110% honest, generous and would never do anything to offend or rip off my like minded working fellows.

If I keep the car which I most likely will now, unless someone makes an offer, (and I would most likely kick myself for selling it as I normally do), then I will try my best to fall deeply in love with the whole scene, cos, I do very much like the RX7, so I will have to stop looking on ebay, and putting notes on peoples cars, as I did with this particular one.

Listen chaps, you need to make up your own minds about this infiltrator who has come along and stirred up your forum. We are not all the same, some of us are different, it does not mean we are crooks, it does not mean we are disingenuous.  Jesus, should I get you guys some references ?

If you want to share in my luck, in winning this little car, please dont cast stones at me. I will probably want to part with it at some stage, whether thats next week or next year, and you chaps will be the first to know.
Is that fair ? or am I still the .... you think I am ?

Sorry I must just add;

RamonNZ, I know you, and you say others, are a bit confused by all this, and I dont take your comments personally because you have been welcoming to me before this, but your quotes;

  "seems disingenuous " and,

"not try to deter from the great community spirit we have got here"

are really completely wrong about me and this topic.

My partner, daughter and I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Don.
He came to met us and spent the day with us in Kent. Showing us new people the ropes and giving us tips. Also having time to help my daughter.

It was really nice to meet another digger that could spare time to help us. I hope in time to come we can help other diggers. We also bumped into Mark again who spent time and gave us a few pointers.

Thank you Don it was great to meet you and hope to meet you again soon or if your ever up our way we can take you to one of our tips.

Hi Don,

No one expects you to keep the car forever, but the point was that I was a little offended that you were looking to offload the thing after not even turning a wheel as the owner, but what appeared to be only after you saw the reactions of the good folk here sharing in your good fortune. I think you perhaps mistook the delight of the others as something else but hopefully you realise it was just that - happiness for you and your new car.

Now that that is out of the way, should you keep her, which we all hope you do, we eagerly await the news of arrival and plans for TMX.
If you want my opinion, (Nobody asked I know...) I think you should leave the colour as is (mine is also Tender Blue) but spend the money on some engine porting to bring out the character of the rotary engine and free up some of those trapped horses.

A simple extend port with the right fueling and exhaust mods can unleash up to 180bhp whilst being completely streetable. In such a light car it is a lot of fun!

I think you perhaps mistook the delight of the others as something else but hopefully you realise it was just that - happiness for you and your new car. [/I]

*******************************************
Hello Mate,

Thanks for the info on the upgrading of the engine, Im a complete dunce with engine and stuff, so i will need to pick your brains and use you all again (joke intended) if I do this.

Have to say tho buddy, you are completely wrong about my reason for considering selling,  you shouldn\'t be offended by another persons innocent right to make a choice. I was and am honoured to receive advice and well wishes from you chaps, and your well meant good wishes. I certainly DID NOT mistake those good wishes as anything else. If you don\'t mind me saying you still seem to be suggesting that I was manipulating these newly found cyber friendships for some kind of gain ? I am not so silly not to understand that £850 quid is cheap, had I been solely after making a profit and nothing else, I would not have logged in to MRC, or paid a subscription to become a member.
When all I needed to do, was buy the car, and whack it onto ebay for everyone to see, and I would have made an instant profit.
Again, I don\'t wish to be rude, but "offload" ??
If this was my intention, ebay would have served this intention far better with such a wide audience.

I will say this again, and it is for you to decide whether you believe me or not,
I am not disingenuous, I am not out to use anyone, or offload my purchase, and I am not happy with that label come to that.
TMX will be available if someone is interested, if not, no big deal, I\'m happy either way. :)
Nuff said I think.

Don,
As far as I am aware, no one has any axe to grind with you on this forum and everyone, myself included, seems to have gone out of their way to make you feel welcome, offer advice and share in your excitement at buying this car.
You can appreciate however when someone new appears on the forum, gets a bunch of enthusiasts interested in a vehicle for sale, secures the purchase and then within 24 hrs is hawking it around the forum for a higher price than they paid for it, people will assume that they have been used and it does not endear you to anyone, even if you felt you were doing it with the best of intentions.
I must  say that I was a bit stunned last night when I read you’d basically posted an ad for it before you’d even completed the purchase and I can well understand how some members felt a bit put out by it. I also felt  disappointed about it and Ramons post summed up my feelings about it this morning perfectly.
I truly hope that you keep the car for a while and enjoy it and likewise, continue to enjoy this forum.
Most people who have owned a 1st gen RX7 love them and even after parting with them for whatever reason, still have a soft spot for them. I’m sure you’ll feel the same.
Here’s looking forward to getting it on your drive next week!

OK Don, more than happy to draw a line under this.

And yes, we are all more than happy to help with whatever you need help with - but I try not to get involved unless it involves making these engines do what they were intended to - rev and make happy pulsing horsepower!

Yes I accept that this was an unusual place to be, im not sure if I would be offended by a newcomer offering his car for sale, even though I might have earlier praised him, given him advice etc, as you chaps have. I think I would have thought, more fool him, and looked at it as, "his loss", and "someone elses gain", so to speak.

I would like to think, (and I do believe) that the MRc forum, is a place where advice and friendliness is free, and expressed without, pre-judgement if you like. As I say we are all different, does not make any of us bad.

Thank you for accepting me back into the Mag 8 :Giggle

Ian, I am not that callous, you were the most helpful of persons here on MRC Forum, sending me links etc, and I am grateful to you all.

Kiss kiss, hug hug, Im sorry, i will do anything for the mag 8 but I wont do that, yuk put your tongue away it tickles.

Right Don – here and out comes the rifle mate.
As you quite rightly stated, we here at the forum are an extremely friendly bunch of guys whom all share the same passion, desire and dedication for what is probably the number love in our lives (next to our better halves that is) – the 1st Gen RX7.
The RX7 is a very scarce motor vehicle but for such enthusiasts would have been extinct within the first decade of its life, but it isn’t dead mate, it is definitely still alive and the heart of this fantastic piece of transport history throbs and is beating very strongly. The forum consists of individuals with a common thread – the continuation of this mighty beast in one form or another. This passion extends to visitors and guests alike who lovingly, are trying to maintain and even improve the life expectancy of their pride and joy for us all to enjoy and something to behold and be extremely proud of.
The only way to ensure this happens is by communicating with others whom through their own experiences have been able to analysis and toil over issues which fully trained mechanics at ‘Main Dealerships’ are incapable of rectifying “because there is nothing in their manuals or data bases for this vehicle – sorry”. These are the true mechanics, engineers and tacticians of this world and these individuals have earned respect from others due to their tenacity to over come and resolve such problems. This is why they are able to share in the enthusiasm of others who are keen to explore new or re-kindle previous memories of owning and being behind the wheel of such a wonderful mode of transport. Many hours are spent by individuals to compile presentations and ‘buyer’s guides’ and the like to assist newcomers and future friends so that they can truly enjoy and experience the joys and sometimes toils of driving these machines.
So with this in mind Don, take at look from our side of the window – it’s not a very nice view when the hand of friendship is offered, only to be torn off by grasping clawing hands after nothing but a quick profit – that is how it seemed to us. This is why it went quiet, yes we were/are stunned by such arrogance to think that we would accept this with open arms. I personally don’t think it was ‘the forum’ that got it wrong.
Right Don – rifle put away mate (by the way they were only blanks) and let’s draw a line under this, forget about it, now let’s go forward together as a team hey.
I do (by the way) admire you for your careful consideration and thought of offering this vehicle to forum members first and agree that this is where it probably will sell – lets hope later rather than sooner.
Me, I also agree that you should leave the colour as is – it is after all a very nice shade of blue (although I prefer white, I could live with it) and the interior is well matched.
Drive it and enjoy it for a while – put her away till next spring when we all meet up for this get together we have been chatting about.
Catch you soon mate,
Chico

:cheers

Don if you keep the car,i\'d keep the colour too, as from what i\'ve read it\'s a good original solid car.
If you change the colour you may damage it\'s originality & resale.

Hi Chico, You cant keep a good gringo down you know, once he has the bit between his teeth, and a cigar stub burning his bottom lip its a matter of quiet refection and then the six shooter is drawn in a flash. :bandit

The last word; I have to be perfectly honest, I must be totally thick, or thick skinned as It did not even enter my mind that anyone here would get the hump because of what was really, (for me anyway) a pretty fair offer to MRC members, I didnt think for one moment that by considering selling the car on the forum, my friendships would be brought into question, this is probably because I am a serial classic car fall in love, get bored, sell, and buy another merchant.

But honestly guys this dont make me a user, which has been suggested.

Just to give you all a quick idea of the type of lunatic I am, You may have seen the 240Z pics. this is typical of me, like i said we are all different. I imported this car from california straight out of a breakers yard, brought it into the UK, spent £20.000 on restoration and sold it 1 year later, out of boredom, and bought a hideous 2CV Woody Estate.

Weird but true.

This time though chaps, I havnt had a classic car in about 12 months, so I am very keen and I do love that shape. So I may be around for some time yet.

Why not take a bit of time out to come and meet up, and look over this car ?, I own a cafe in a Country Park here in Kent, and could possibly arrange an afternoon meet, with complimentary teas/coffees if anyone is interested. Large free car park too.

Hi Don - no worries mate, no more dwelling on this.
:wave

Sounds like a possible meet for us forum members?  What was under discussion previously was location due to the distances involved for all becasue we are spread across the country - albeit southern England is home for the majority of FB\'s I think.  So in order for everybody to have the opportunity for less travelling the suggestion was for multi location meetings - I thought this was fair as the majority of us have probably restricted our mileage to 3k per year and of cause the \'old girls\' are beginning to mature now - so are some of us drivers too I would imagine.  Anyway the \'meets\' are still to be confirmed.

Bet next week can\'t come soon enough for you?

Looking forward to poking about, getting that bumper sorted, and those niggly little jobs sorted, give the interior a bl**dy good shampoo, and then I can call it my own. Its all briefed up too, so its straight in the old jam jar and and give it a caning. :evillaugh

Hey chico, have a word with your twin brother he,s copying your posts mate :rollin

You have probably told me before, but what are you doing to your car ? Engine mods I would hesitate a guess.

I cant make up my mind to chuck cash at modifications or what, I like the idea of originality, (being a classic fan, more than a bhp fan) but I also want to be able to burn the silly pants off those kids in their silly saxos :Grrr

Once I have the car back here, you are most welcome to come and give it a thrash about if your passing, I have no idea how it even drives yet, only went out as a passenger with the retired drivers husband, wasnt that thrilling !!!:Laugh.

Just off for breakfast mate, some chilli beans and rice.

An eerie whisling refrain penetrates the high noontime in the deepest Kent countryside.

A nervous owner, Gringo, goes out on the veranda of the Bar None cafe and coffee shop. He looks up, squinting into the noonday sun.

Vague shapes are silhouetted against the sun: Gringo thinks he can see seven figures approaching......it can\'t be,.....it is,.....The Mag 7 are in town!    :bandit

There are 6 clicks as the drivers doors are locked. A seventh voice says "I still can\'t get this buggering window slider right".

Then a harsh voice rasps out of the haze. "Hey Chico, cover them tables". "And you, Gringo, reach for the Douwe Egberts".

Like it guys?

As chico spits out his dummy (sorry)

As Chico spits out his cigar butt, grinds it into the dust with his old worn out leather boot, he checks his fob watch.
The sun by now is high in the sky and beating down on the Mag 6, one or two of the renowned amigos, surely absorbing the full ultra violet rays onto their balding scalps.

Chico flips his watch shut, and thinks to himself, if only they could invent a phone with a similar closing device.

All at once there is an ear deafening blast, as the last amigo arrives in the car park, his steedy mode of transport backfiring to the tune of a bodged porting.

(Stay tuned for episode 2.)

You have probably told me before, but what are you doing to your car ? Engine mods I would hesitate a guess.

I bought JAZ as SORN off eBay without seeing her - requiring a battery, tyre & Clutch Master & Slave cylinders.
Done those but upon further investigation came across some badly corroded areas underside & rear sills, virtually no brakes, very badly uncared for underneath with a few cosemetic body repairs and also did a full interior upgrade/exchange for my preferred colour.  Now down to the last before inspection time at Dodge City Station just across from the ranch.
If it doesn\'t go well I\'ll be calling for MAG 7 to set up an ambush and maybe a linching or two.

Here are a few latest photos of my ride guys:-

Very tasty looking motor Keith.

Your rear spoiler, has it been sprayed body colour? or did it come that way ?
Is it a new spoiler ?

Only, on TMX its a black, kinda rubber material, which I would like to do something with. I was also thinking about same with the black body trims ?
