Just pulled the engine apart on my latest fd and found not only has it got 3mm tips but the housings are a very bright shiny chrome like ive not seen before and they seem to be massively scored,
Anybody back this up?
I know pics are crap

They look absolutely awful.
i know cant believe someone has spent out on 3mm seals and had the rotors machined to put it back together with these housings,
im not convinced this was causing the smoke problem but i dont think ill be using them again
looks like typical aftermarket seal damage to me
though first have to ask the obvious -
was both housings like this? ( is this pics of both housings ? )
was the OMP operational?
was you advised to premix supplementary to the OMP ( if fitted ) ?
was the airfilter fitted an oiled ?
pics of the seal and rotor slots please
my impression of pic 1 is dragons nails ( galling lack of lube )
and of pic 2 ,, more galling and definite chatter due to harmonics from miss-matched spring tension to seal mass
Yes this is both rotor housings
omp is fitted but unsure how well it was working/serviced
just picked car as faulty from customer
didnt see any oil in filter or inlet
They do look like uprated seals as they are wider but have no idea who made them
im wondering if sticky side seal caused smoking

i meant uprated springs.
Looks like chatter marks to me.
mine where exactly the same i have 3mm tips which are hurley ones and hayward rotary told me the 3mm tips always score the bores they are all chrome plated
while i cant nail down who\'s seal it is,,
( on some brands it may have a number or moniker scribed into the side )
it doesn\'t look mazda
it looks like it has been wearing the rotor tip
( which after machining will have lost the hardening in the slot )
and it has galled and chattered the housing
lack of lube for whatever seal it is,, and even then some arent all that friendly with the housing
the spring isnt coping with harmonics and that is why it has chattered
( usually its caused by a heavy seal,, mazda solved this by lightening the seal construction )
really it needs all to be binned and replaced with OEM
if the customer is a tight arse,, maybe you need to cover yourself by extensively documenting this before you put it back together
( even with new housings,, this may well happen again,, and the customer needs to be shown all of this )
if he demands lots of re-use
i would be considering getting the seals notched to take at least the smaller dual spring from a FC/FD
and definitely turning up the OMP ( if mechanical and working OK ) and the rate of premix
as for the oil smoke issue,, if the corner or side seals have pinched,,, carbon burning beyond and behind the side seals will be evident
this may well be enough to cause it to smoke as it may well cook or coke the oil control seals
and the combustion may be getting under the chrome oil seal cases and floating them
else,, usually lots of washdown will get around the stuck side or corner seal and heavily dilute the oil recovered by the oil control cases
-- this can cause smoking in its own right --
check the wear strip on the chromes is not too wide
replace all the oil control rubbers
ream the corner seal holes to make sure they are round
check side seal to corner seal tolerance ,, and since its obviously for higher HP than stock ,, open them out to 0.10 mm
Show us a pic of the whole seal with both parts and we\'ll know.
Regards
Carl
This looks very very familiar for me when i pulled down my 12a after using 1 piece hurleys on brand new 12at housings!
I tell you now i wasnt impressed with what i saw after 20min of running time - obviously wasnt as bad but listen to the so called "experts" to put miles on my engine this would of been my end result for sure!!!
Ok got some more pics
i know theyre all chrome plated but never seen them like this
Also found some paperwork which suggests rxheaven tested it when it was imported, not sure if they rebuilt it though.
May have been donre in japan
I have glued them together as might use them in my car

hurleys do not and never have chrome plated our tip seals check your slot clearence
This is why Mazda have spent millions and decades developing apex seals.
Beats me why anyone would want to use aftermarket seals which are often a similar price or more expensive and have had in comparison very liittle testing time.
I know the tips arent chrome plated but the damage they\'ve caused is clear
I\'ve measured tolerance of slots bearings housings and corner seals and all seem good, the rest of the engine including oil feed and cooling is fine, this leafs me to believe to sole cause had to have been poor seals or springs.
They look exactly like a set that got ravaged by RA seals
