Tightened fan belt on JAZ and when the engine idols - no problem, it sounds nice and sweet. If the engine is revved there is a squealing sound!
Bling! ...... my 1st thought was that I had tightened the belt too tight, so I slackened it off but no change.
So today I\'ve changed the Water Pump for a new one - that will stop it - NO!
So was this a wasted day or what?
Any ideas what might be causing the squealing?
Is it possibly a serious issue?
Suggestions please guys.

:3Confused
Could be alternator bearing
Did it squeal before u tightened fan belt?
are you running the standard viscous fan?
When I bought JAZ it was a non runner - needed battery so cannot say.
Yes it is running the standard viscous fan.
my money is on the viscous coupler then, they go bad, load the engine and when the egine revs up the belt can\'t turn the weight of the fan fast enough and the belt squeals
Alternator bearing - hmmm ... never thought of that.
Wouldn\'t this squeal though even when idling?

Quickest way to test for this being ..... remove the fan for a few minutes I would think?
Mine didn\'t when it expired
Yeah I would just remove the fan belt, eliminate the main engine and that only leaves three things!

correct! undo the 4no 10mm bolts that hold on the viscous coupler and rev it up...
while the fan is off, give the car a quick spin up the road, it won\'t overheat as long as you keep moving and you\'ve got airflow.... you\'ll be amazed at how much quieter and more responsive the engine is without that big heavy fan on it.
There is a trick you can do to fix the viscous coupler, I put it in this thread a while back...

So tomorrow it will be:-
Option 1 - Without fan belt
Option 2 - Without fan

I\'ll have to test it static as the car is sorn ;)
Dose\'nt take long to get help round this place!

Good information (as ever) on how to test/service the coupler - will see how I get on tomorrow and let you know. :cheers

The guys on this forum as ACE - back of the net!
It\'s like A & E or casualty here for Fb\'s.
If thats the case then me and Ian have got patients in intensive care!:D

Another reason Chico joined the MAG 6 - to learn fron them.
Gus has started squealing at 4000 rpm. I figured the fan belt but it\'s not too slack or too tight. Vicious coupler check time for me as well... Thanks Ian.

Pesky little meces - not this time.
Took viscous fan off and there you go - just the purring of the sweet engine not a pesky mouse anywhere.
A little maintenance work carried out, refitted and now quiet again.
Thanks for that Ian.
:cheers
Hmm....took fan off, pretty good nick but still took brass pin out (was free).
Cleaned out a bit of dusty dirt from inside of fan back boss, and tightened fanny belt very slightly.
So did nothing really (found nothing amiss) but Gus is running smoother and with more gusto....Explanations on a postcard please. :3Confused
I\'d sensed he was getting to be a tad rougher than usual some time ago, but now that\'s all gone.

Because as they get old, they become an unreliable piece of junk.... you didn\'t touch it and all by itself it started playing up..... you then fiddle with it a bit and it starts working again. They\'re horrible things that just act like an enormous brake on the engine. I\'ve had grief with these things on each of the last 3 1st gens I\'ve owned.
All electric now.... I\'ve seen the light. No hassle.....reliability..... more responsive engine.... no flymo sound effects from under the bonnet...... I\'ve seen the light!
If the A & E department is still open guys then I have a problem that needs a solution. Ever since I purchased my fb back in April it has acquired a high pitch squealing noise that you can only hear from within the car. I was told by the good chap who sold it to me (who is an auto electrician and also a member of the site within the fd section) that he believed it was the contacts on the coolant sensor. It usually starts making the noise once the engine has warmed up and sometimes just stops but on other occasions I have had to put up with it on a 45 minute trip to work. On the odd occasion it hasn\'t even made the noise.
Any idea Dr\'s?
nearly all squealing noises tend to come from the fan belt. I\'ve never heard of a coolant sensor making that noise. I suppose the next time it does it the answer would be to unplug the sensor and see if the noise stops. sounds a weird one!
Ian
When I picked the car up from the bloke he started the engine and he claimed it was the first he had heard it. He disconnected it and cleaned the contacts which appeared to work, until about 20 miles down the road and was then on and off for the further 180 miles home. If it was the fan belt wouldn\'t I hear that noise whilst out of the car?
Have you tried disconnecting the coolant sensor when the noise is audible to hear if it stops?
Without actually hearing the noise I would say trial and error with switching components on/off until perhaps you manage to find the culprit.
My coolant sensor only puts a light on, dont think it makes a noise.

The most common cause of the belt slipping is the viscous coupler going bad and starting to lock up. If this happens, when you rev the engine, it can\'t spin the fan fast enough and the belt slips.
If you\'re out of the car it\'s only on tickover so the problem wouldn\'t occur.
Next time it happens, give it plenty of revs and see if the noise gets worse.
You might even get a whiff of burning fanbelt.
It sounds like a mechanical problem to me rather than an electrical one but there again.......

I tried this and sometimes it works but not usually, I\'ll have to dig deeper re playing around. I must say this response is fantastic lads, thanks for all the suggestions.
Just turn the radio up:Giggle
This is a real far fetched one - if the noise is only audible in the ....pit, its nothing to do with interference and a mobile phone by any chance?

It\'s the sort of crass comment i\'d do:Giggle.

I\'ve found that this is by far the best solution to the problem.
Now doesn\'t the coolant warning make a noise as well as put the light up??
Sooo... if the coolant\'s a tad low...just a bit....the engine will be fine but it would be in warning mode. But if the warning bulb\'s gone then the buzzer will buzz...and buzzz...and buzzzzzzzzz.....until it gets tired, then it might sound like a fly in a jam jar?
Disconnecting the sensor will probably have no effect since it will earth through the coolant for silence in normal use - warning fails safe?
So I\'d double and treble check for that little air bubble in the top of the rad that triggers the sensor.

Refresh as to why doing next-to-nothing achieved a fix on Sid Vicious.
Thinking back to when I took the brass pin out...I was a bit disappointed not to find anything and just pushed the pin back in.....and the pressed it a bit with my screwdriver! I think now that the oil valve might have freed off as I pressed the pin in and out?
In 25 years I might have to do the same again...hopefully.
Its on the slippery slope now David so will probably only last 15 years till next time :chat

Keep an eye on your temp for the next few drives Dave because although 8/10 these fans start to go stiff, sometimes they can go the opposite way and start to \'freewheel\' so that the fan starts to spin slower and then doesn\'t cool the engine.
Yes, thanks, I had thought of that. It\'s still making the old wooshing like a wind tunnel when I accelerate so may be OK. Will watch it though.

I think you could have hit the nail on the head here Dave, didn\'t think about the bulb having gone. I can confirm that there is no shortage of coolant as it\'s literally full to the brim. I\'ll check and let you know although it could be a couple of days due to work at the mo.
On thinking about this, bulb check is simple - do all the warnings come on when the key is turned to ignition? If not the check relay (\'U\' shaped metal can thing on the inner wing) wants looking at.
Also the warnings trigger an electronic chime.....put the sidelights on with the door open....there\'s a whistle type electronic chime - I think it\'s the same one used for both functions?
