Title: My HEADLAMP Washers aren\'t working!
Post by: CHC (RIP) on October 21, 2010, 11:14:03 PM
Getting down to the last few jobs before we go for the MOT.
Filled up all the washer bottles, front screen okay, rear screen no washer - turns out the switch was faulty (cleaned & now okay) but headlamp washer doesn\'t want to work!
Took bottle out this evening and put temporary feed from battery to the connector - no joy.  The impeller is solid and refuses to rotate either way.  Is this supposed to be free as with the other pumps?
If not very well, can it be fixed or should it go to the great scrap heap and needs to be replaced?
Any suggestions where to purchase a replacement - used or new?

Welcome to the faulty headlamp wash motor club Cliff!
I bet there are more 1st gens out there with faulty headlamp washers than there are with working ones.
You can fix them though.....

See how I did it...

Mine works great now, loads of power!

Now that makes good reading with simple instructions - why even I could follow that.
It\'s a bit late I suppose to go into the garage now to squirt it with WD so I\';ll have to wait until tomorrow.
The connector into the bottle is different on the S2 - I\'ll photo tomorrow & post it up.

Cheers Ian.

:cheers

just go very very carefully when you try to prise it apart Cliff, it\'s very delicate and easy to ruin if it\'s very rusty which it probably is. It could have been seized for decades!
If you can\'t get it open, drill a 1/8 hole in the end of the case ( so that you miss the magnets) and pump nearly a tin of wd40 into it. You can araldite the hole up later.
I bet these things cost an absolute arm, if they are even still available.
Good luck!

The strange thing about them is from the outside you wouldn\'t even consider there to be a problem - mine is in near pristine condition, well at least it looks good even if it doesn\'t work.
Will start the process off tonight and shall await developments.
Cheers for that.

Headlamp washers never ever been tested on my MOT\'s.
Last used them in 1993 (I think).

If you live next to a farm, fine.    :flamed

I do!

Totally agree that they may not really be necessary but the fact remains its fitted to the car.  Therefore I want them working - to me it\'s all about the originality and knowing that everthing works.

Right taken some photos before I started the process.
1 & 2 show the outer casing - pretty good condition I thought but the impeller is oh so tight.
3 to 5  show bits that came out of the washer bottle when I cleaned it this afternoon - what are they and are they necessary for the functionality of the pump?
6 shows the casing which connects to the bottle together with the two unknown bits.

Any suggestions or known details welcome

Left the washer pump soaking overnight and tried to move it this afternoon - yeh it has started to move, ever so slightly.  So I\'ve left it and will try again in another 24 hrs.

With a little gentle persusion of a rubber mallet got the movement required, twisted & turned, pulled and pushed and it came out of the housing ....... yeh, just a little bit corroded.
Cleaned up the aramture and now drying off, casing soaking in brake fluid and will tackle tonight.
So might get it working yet - either way it moves more that it did before (even though it\'s by hand).

Here are latest photos of the offending pump/washer motor to show condition of the interior components ......

doesn\'t look to bad Cliff. That commutator is a bit grimey.... I cleaned mine with a very soft wire brush in my dremmel. The brushes need to be sliding freely as well.
I painted the inside of my case around the magnets to hold back the rust then greased the spindle before putting it back together.

I thought it looked pretty good under the circumstance too.
The bushes are moving quite freely I\'m pleased to report.
Having the armature checked over just to make sure there is no minor fault before I continue with refurb and installation on a new seal.

The guy was on holiday this week but back in tomorrow so hopefully might have an answer mid week.
Not waiting on this as I intend going to MOT some time this week - fingers crossed and everything else :eek:eek
Yes I want JAZ to come home fully certified but if it fails (as long as it\'s for safety reasons) I wont mind too much as it\'s the end of the season and I\'ll be putting her into hibernation until spring soon - in saying that I\'ll want to have her right before she\'s put away.
Will keep MAG 7 updated with progress.

Latest news Ian is that the motor can be fixed and I should get it back later this week, so will need to strip down the front end again and install it.

Washer motor returned this morning - now functional and just needs refitting.
Still yet to establish what the two other foreign bodies are from that came out of the washer bottle when I emptied it - any ideas gang?  If these are not fitted will it stop the motor from pumping?

Not just a simple check valve to hold the water up in the pipes \'till next squirt?

they are parts off the washer fluid level sensor, nothing to do with the pump ( you\'ll be delighted to hear!)

There are 2 holes in the reservoir, 1 for the pump and 1 for the sensor...

to get the sensor out, prise the lip of the rubber seal back and pull the sensor out of the reservoir...

it looks like this...

The round black bit you found in the res is the float out of the sensor and the round bit of plastic is the bit that holds it onto the shaft and stops it coming off. They are prone to breaking off.

easy fix, pop the float back on the shaft, heat up a flat bladed screwdriver and melt the end of the shaft slightly, enough to stop the float coming all the way off and that\'s it!
Push the sensor back in and you\'re good to go.

Fantastic news Ian, the MAG 7 come through again. Had a sneaky suspision that it could possibly be associated with the sensor but needed verification (boy that\'s a long word at this hour) as I couldn\'t see inside the res (abreviated because I can\'t spell reservoir).
As ever the technical detail and supporting diagramatics are 2nd to none - are you sure you never used to work for Mazda? You should have, in fact you should full stop, at least them the populose would receive good information instead of absolute tripe.
Thanks as ever.

Managed to get around to re-starting this this afternoon.
Have reassembled the washer motor into the bottle and then went to the sensor.
Did as suggested and heated up the blade of a screwdriver but noted that in doing so the remainer of the tube end collapsed to leave just an open ended pipe with the sensor exposed at the bottom.  Thinking that this will probably most definitely cause a direct short in the electrics if immersed in water, I have sealed the end and fused the cap to it and have left it to cure before completing the assembly.
Saga to be continued this week.
