Hello people,
Recently got a convertible FC which is quite tasty if i dont say so myself :mmmm
But its been sold to me with the roof not functioning... ive never owned an FC or convertible so im not too sure what to check really. When i follow the steps for opening the roof (unlock etc) what ever way i move the switch nothing happens...no clicking no stuggling motors etc... behind the accelerator pedal there are a couple of fuses but no cover so i googled "FC3S fuse box" and came up with the below picture, so at a guess the (sun roof) is the fuse i should be checking, pulled that one out its not blown and its a 20amp... though to be honest i thought the fuses would of been bigger for the 2 big Motors??
i guess next i should be checking to see if the motors are getting any sort of feed but i dont have a multi meter so i need to borrow one
So am i on the right track? am i missing something?
Also my roof is badly torn so i need a replacement... i heard somewhere on the MRC someone was selling them for £300?

Couple of things to check:
1) Handbrake must be on for the roof to operate - if the handbrake warning light in the cluster is not coming on, then the switch maybe faulty and the system won\'t operate - although I think it still beeps at you.
2) Sometimes the ignition barrel switch doesn\'t make proper contact on mine - a quick \'wiggle\' of the key get\'s it all going again.
3) The \'soft top\' fuse is the one between rear wiper and sun roof on your piccy - it\'s a 30A fuse.
Okay then. Question. I got an USDM, and my roof can be taken down even when driving in like 100km/h (I haven\'t tried, but it does work in 30, so why not), what can be wrong then? I do not have a handbrake light at all. Where is the sensor for the handbrake?
It shouldn\'t be working that way - sounds like someone\'s jumpered it somehow ;)
The handbrake switch is in the mechanism - close to the front on the side of the lever - just a single wire.
so the fuse that is blank in the picture should be the one im check and its a 30amp? ill check it before i go to work :)
but the hand break light comes on, and the car is running so i shouldnt have to wiggle should i? Also i havent heard a beep from it yet

Mr car starts ok, but the wipers and electric roof motors don\'t always seem to come on. The switch has 2 ACC outputs - and on mine one of these is a little funny sometimes. If you\'re wipers are working, then it won\'t be the switch problem. :)
Hope it\'s just the fuse :)
30 amp fuse isnt blown and the wipers work...
you can lower it manually ( i think )
there is something on both motors to do it manually
i suppose first thing to check is to see if you are getting power to the actual motors themselves
There is a small control unit attached to one of the motors - can\'t remember which side it is - that\'s got the control logic in for both motors and includes the relays and what not to power them up. It\'s got a large multiway connector goes into it - may be worth just pulling that out and plugging it back in again in case it\'s not making good contact.
If that fails, pull the box out and take the lid off - see if anything looks toasted / burnt in there !
Ill have a look around when i get home but if anyones got any pictures of these relays id be most greatful :)
If the manual operating screws are not fully released on the motor they have a micro switch on them that stops the electrics from working also.
What are the "manual operating screws" would the car make any noises beeps etc if they are not "fully released" and you try to put the roof down?
i couldnt see any relays for the motors i must be looking in the wrong place

The relays are inside the roof motor control unit - which is in that rear section of the car where the motors are - follow the wiring there - you can\'t miss it.
several things here to look for:
1. make sure that you have a proper cab control module for the roof/wipers, a coupe one can be fitted and the roof function will not work but the wipers will. The coupe has the rear wash wipe and is a common fix to get the wipers working due to their availability.
2. Each motor you get at by removing the rear parcel shelf and there is a posi drive bolt that you screw in/out to engage/disengage the motors, you have to do the both and then roof and be manually put down regardless of the handbrake on or not. At this stage I do not even think the handbrake has anything to do with the system until i look into the diagrams as I am sure mine works regardless of handbrake position. There again it has got me thinking as mine failed to go down one day and never found the reason why!! just could have been the handbrake as I do leave mine off if it stands for some time. lol
3. You can disconnect the motor to roof arm links, big bolt on each motor but worth the look whilst you are there to see whats going on.
4. I think that the passenger side motor has a microswitch on the outside of the motor,at least mine did, nothing on the drivers side.
if you are not even getting the beep beep noise when you operate the switch then it could be either the switch itself or the fuse/relay all the way to each motor, it is a fairly simple system so should be easy to diagnose.
Prof: I can not remember a control module inside my rear area by the motors? I know mines JDM but I have not seen one there, i will have to have a look.
If you need motors then let me know

Pete - seems the CPU is built into the right motor - but both motor units have the relays inside them.
There is a check connector in the rear near the motor, and also a procedure to troubleshoot the system. You want part S or \'Body\' of the RX7 manual - there are several online copies knocking about, but they seem to move from time to time. If you\'re stuck let me know - I can email the pdf to you - it\'s about 4.5 MB.
Also look if the lever that makes contact with the microswitch is in the right position, otherwise it will not beep and work. Does it beep when you turn the knop in the closing position?
i havent had time today to dig around but i will start playing tomorrow hopefully. if i could get the PDF that would be great :)
my e-mail is alex-buckley (at) live.co.uk
As it stands i havent ever heard the FC beep when i touch the roof switch
QuoteWhat are the "manual operating screws"
From the manual
1/Slide both seats fully forward. Then turn the panel knobs and lift up the spare tyre cover.
2/Insert a Phillips screwdriver into the left and right services holes and turn clockwise until it can no longer turn
3/Raise the convertible top by hand
I\'m guessing but could someone have left the screws turned this way and that stops the roof working electrically.

hey bud i havent had an e-mail from you yet? did you replace the (at) with @ ?
Sent at 8.47 from my hotmail a/c - it might be in your junk items ?
back again!
Sorry your e-mail did arrive there was just no subject so it didnt jump out on me thanks :)
it is now currently working but im not sure how.... the only 2 thing that ive done/ happened are i was bored so pulled out the immobiliser key and turnt the key the immobiliser worked, i plugged it back in and for some reason i tried the roof and it beeped! so unlocked it and it moved! But its also been pis*ing it down the passed few days so it might of shorted it or something...
Try your handbrake off and see if it works or not, gonna try mine now just to see if that was causing mine many months ago.
Glad its working, its actually quicker to open and close it manually but nothing beats the class of an electric roof.
