Has anyone got any handy hints for getting the pilot bearing out?
I managed to get the seal out but not the bearing... I presume you need some sort of minature puller.... any other ideas before I sharpen up a wood chisel and chop it out.
I might have a small internal slide hammer (i did have one once) havnt seen it for a while, will have a hunt round for it.
If I cant find it I will bodge you one up at work tomorrow.
Yep - slide hammer is the tool - makes it so easy you\'ll wonder how it could ever be done any other way :)
Apparently a tight fitting piece of wood does the trick.
To be honest though if they are coming out its usually to be replaced so it doesnt matter if you savage them, just be careful on the shaft
Any joy with extracting the \'bearing\' yet Ian?

not yet, nothing would touch it.... I\'m chopping it out.... still ongoing.
Sure does sound one son of a ****h. Is it possible to heat the surrounding area to expand it?

I\'m a bit worried there might be an oil seal on the shaft behind the flywheel and I might damage it with heat. It\'s almost out now, I\'ve chiselled most of it and cut it out with a dremmel. Nearly done.
get a pilot bearing puller...sadly, almost every other way will bork the shaft.
if you cant get a pilot bearing puller then ive used a small chisel before and some point nose pliers - did the trick..

Hows about an internal grinding tool or could the slithers of steel cause a problem too ?

I\'ve used an engraving bit in the dremmel to carefully grind through the bearings hardened outer case, making sure I don\'t damage the shaft itself. Any slight marks I can polish out with the dremmel.
Using the proper kit is obviously the best way to do it but I haven\'t got the puller and this sod is in unbelievably tight.
It\'s nearly out now.
True dedication - well done.

otherwise known as \'getting yourself out of the **** with whatever you\'ve got lying around\'!
Improvisation is the name of the game...
That may very well be true but even so not everybody would have tackled this - well done.
Finally got this pilot bearing out and it was a complete pain of a job. Took me 5 hrs in total.
I\'d never attempt to get one of these out again without the proper puller...

It can be done but really isn\'t worth the hassle.
The problem is once you commit yourself to cutting it out, there\'s no going back and it\'s a long, laborious job carefully grinding it away with a Dremel ensuring that the shaft doesn\'t sustain any damage until the hardened bearing race is thin enough to break out.
Early on with mine, I tried to improvise and ended up forcing the bearing tight to the back of the hole in the shaft which meant that I was then unable to hook anything behind it to pull it out. It was also unbelievably tight in the shaft.
Out with the old...

In with the new...

Glad this job is over...
Have a cup of tea mate sounds like you need it!
......... and a few marmite sandwiches to build up strength - engine re-fit next?
For future reference.....
If you have a metal shaft of a diameter approximately the same as the internal diameter of the bearing (i.e. slides in and out easy enough, but not too loose) then all you need to do is fill the void full of grease, slide the shaft in to pack down the grease and hit the shaft with a hammer - the bearing will be hydraulically popped out quite easy...
Sorry for missing this thread :)

Have you got that engine back in yet Ian?

not yet.... latest update in the Elford conversion thread!
Sorry mate I was being sarcastic, I can see how hard you are working on your projects and given that you\'ve just had a bit of a blow after removing the bearing thought you might have commenced rebuild. But of cause you need to push on with the conversion before you put power unit back in .... I\'m a daft ***** :Hammer
It\'s almost there now Cliff, just needs the Elford stuff ( turbo and inlet) bolting on and it\'s ready to go back in.
Looks as if your weekend is fully booked then - take it you wont be watching the Grand Prix then?
only got today to look at it, got a family get together tomorrow..... bloody relatives!
Nightmare....I\'ve only got a bit of today and maybe tomorrow afternoon due to the kids having parties to attend.....yay!

That\'s the problem mate - they just don\'t understand the priorities in life. Don\'t know about you but I think the working week should consist of two days whilst the weekends should be five! Even if they were there still wouldn\'t be enough hours in the day cause more relatives would show up - and none of them ever bring overalls with them do they?
Did you manage to get much done today?

Had a rubbish day on it really.
Blimey Ian, Id have a word with whoever is supplying your broken parts :2eek

Perhaps he lent you those due to embarassment?
Sorry missed the thread, but for future, i made my own slide hammer, see thread here :)

That\'s neat, stored in my (fast reducing) memory banks.
Cheers mate.
