Well here we go.....the rain has started becoming more prolific so it is time to announce the start of this project.
The majority of you know NEV, I\'ve had him for 3 years and even though he is not too shabby with the 12A in, I have a hankering for more power. I did consider just buying a 2nd Gen Turbo II but was concerned that one or the other would suffer due to having to split funds between them....and there is no way I am not having a 1st gen in my life so that was that!
I am not aiming for stratospheric power here, I just want a fun streetable car rather than a drag beast so I\'d be happy with power in the region of 250-270 bhp. I have just picked up a 13BT lump...

....and will continue to gather parts over the next month or so, so the project doesn\'t stand still for too long once I\'m fully committed.
Other issues will be addressed at the same time like referb of the suspension etc to ensure we can keep the no found power under control.
Thats it really....it won\'t happen overnight as funds won\'t allow it but hopefully we\'ll be back up and running for the spring.
Should make a very cool setup. They are quite good NA too for that extra bit of torque !
Shaun
Quoteso I\'d be happy with power in the region of 250-270 bhp
wouldnt we all :D
Should be pretty wild tim!
As you say 270 brake in the light weight 1st gen should keep you on your toes, whilst still being fairly drivable day to day.
Yeah I did consider staying N/A to make things easier/cheaper but the amount I\'ve read about how much fun a boosted FB is made it no contest in the end.
I will start taking a look at the lump at the weekend, doubt I\'ll retain the stock turbo as I don\'t want to change the subframe (like Ramon) so will more than likely get a purpose built manifold from Oz that takes the turbo just that little bit further away from that pesky steering box.
I\'m open to suggestions on what choice of turbo I go with but like I said-I want the power to be streetable rather than something I\'ve got to wind up. I\'m not sure which engine management I am going with as yet though-more than likely LINK as it\'s the system Tim White is familiar with.
Engine management wise, if you\'re up for a challenge don\'t discount Megasquirt. It does require a fair amount of learning and reading, but has some distinct advantages. Firstly its cheap! Like £250 for complete set-up cheap. Secondly its exceedingly flexible. Thirdly its really handy to have the control yourself to easily hook up a laptop and tweak things. I make small changes to mine probably a couple of times a week, just deciding to add a tiny bit of fuel here or there or that I want a fraction more ignition advance somewhere, or even things like tweaking how aggressive the over run fuel cut is or when a shift light comes on or anything really. On my old turbo set-up I built extra little section so I had launch control and flat foot shifting.
Though its does require lots of time and dedication to make it work well. And you need to kinda understand at least the basics of engine tuning theory and have the right sort of logical problem solving approach or it\'ll never be great.
Now thats why I like my standard set up, I knew there was a good reason .........:3Confused
How are you going to mount the 13B? if you\'re sticking with the front mount (easiest way) you\'ll need a 12A front cover. i\'ve got one for sale.
rotaryguru at hotmail dot com
Chronicles of a 13b swap,sounds like a movie title!
If you need any hinderance with your project,i\'ll help!
Sounds interesting i\'ll keep an eye on it,did\'nt don pamponi do this too?

Yeah I\'m using a 12A front cover-what I plan to do is get the 12A compression tested, if I get good figures from it I\'ll put it up for sale as it appears to be healthy. If it gives bad figures I\'ll just use the front cover off it and use the rotors as door stops:rolleyes:
Cheers for letting me know you\'ve got it though mate-I\'ll be in touch...
Stu, Don Pamponi\'s car is (I think) a 12a with EFI and a bigger turbo but has the 2nd gen sub frame. Thats still a wild piece of kit though-nice car.
Steve- cheers for the heads up on the Megasquirt, I know the americans love it I\'ll bare it in mind. Will be picking your brains I\'m sure!
I\'m building my 3rd megasquirted car next weekend helping a friend out with his turboed vw polo. And then in a few weeks I\'ll be building the 4th for my s2. So I should be doing the ground work on it for the 1st gen. :) I\'ll try to keep good notes!
I\'m very interested to see how this all comes together Tim as it\'s exactly what I plan to do with my project car ( once I get the elford out of the way).
I quite like Ramons idea of using a 2nd gen sub frame and a rack but that\'s a lot more work and I don\'t want to get bogged down with stuff I\'m not very confident about doing.
I\'ll probably go down the same route as you and use the existing front beam.
Hopefully you\'ll have solved all the problems before I get to them!
Good luck with this project and fair play to you for taking it on.

I think you need a GSL-SE sump as well don\'t you??
GSL-SE sump is the easiest way to go.. Stock 12a timing cover with a -10 AN alloy fitting for the turbo drain :)
I had my car tunned but had injector issues and it made 290 @ 6000rpm on 9psi lets just say in 3rd gear going up dartford bridge it went 2 lanes no probs :)
Cheers Ian, I\'ve got a feeling we are all gonna be in this together! I\'ve done nothing but read and read about this conversion on every rotary site going so figured it was about time I just went for it.

Thats not too shabby is it mate, what turbo are you running?
The GSL-SE sump is next on my hit list, any ideas where I might source one or is the US my best bet?
ive got a TO4r on mine..
yeh try rx7club.com or ebay USA
Your engine a S4 or 5? You running what box?

I seem to remember Shaun got his from WGT..... unless I imagined it!
.
It\'s an S5, I\'m undecided on gearbox-I\'m not going to be drag racing or anything so may retain the 1st gen box as it is nice and tight but I\'m not sure. Do you have any opinions either way? At least N/A counterweights and flywheels are readily available.
What manifold are you using too.....or did you get over clearance of the turbo another way?
Quote from: Ian65;719710I seem to remember Shaun got his from WGT..... unless I imagined it!
.
Cool, that\'d make life easier!
I reckon you\'ll need a T2 gearbox, I think the sort of power you\'re looking for will shred a S2 box.
Yeah you\'re probably right Ian, an rx7club.com there seems to be a 50/50 divide in opinion on this subject but I guess it\'s better to be safe than stuck waiting for the AA.
Maybe I should stop messing about and put an RX8 box in it.:D:D:D:D
6th gear cruising lovelyness
S2/3 box is good for about 250hp max.. Deff go the S5 turbo box.. Ive got one in mine behind the 12a with a os giken clutch and its fine.
If you have the box or can get one its the better option... was talking about rx8 box with pip at the weekend and he agreed behind a turbo engine they may not last long but again depends on how you drive it and what power you putting through it..
My exhaust manifold i bought from australia when i was back seeing family and thats pretty much where i got all my parts from. Its not hard to make one up and it all depends what turbo you want to go...

Pip usually keeps them on the shelf if I remember rightly. If not he can source them quite easily. Not the cheapest item but gets rid of loads of hassles !
Could mega squirt control LPG injectors too with fuel temp and pressure effecting the map ?
Shaun
Adrian runs the rx8 box in the time attack FC. Its running very good power, 450+bhp without too much hassle. Sure there are a couple of guys running them in drag cars too !
Shaun
You mean Neil shaun, although I wish it was mine :). Gonna keep an eye on this thread I do like the FB\'s even more so if htey have a TII in them!
I think Tim Whites purple FB is running an RX8 box.
GSL-SE sumps.
Mazdatrix do them $92 US,but shipping & import charges on top.
Cheers Stu, thought you said you were a hinderance lol

Well it\'s not an fb ice sculpture.
MGF or MR2?
Ha, nice pic. Definately MGF though judging by the wheels.
Little update, Ramon is sorting me out with a 12AT front cover and sump, so thats that sorted. Will hopefully get time too put the 13BT on the bench tomorrow and strip off whats left of the loom and front cover.
Had a spare hour so got the engine on the bench today to make a start, sump is off, front cover bolts are out, thankfully clean as a whistle there so fingers crossed that theme will continue!

I\'m sure you\'ve go it in hand, but you\'ll need a different oil pickup also - the stock one will not fit the sump. I\'ve done the conversion (kinda did a few bits and pieces like single turbo and rewire), and it\'s not too bad. If I can, anyone should be able to!! :D
Quote from: Archbish;720451I\'m sure you\'ve go it in hand, but you\'ll need a different oil pickup also - the stock one will not fit the sump. I\'ve done the conversion (kinda did a few bits and pieces like single turbo and rewire), and it\'s not too bad. If I can, anyone should be able to!! :D
do you use the 12a pickup?
Cheers Bish, I\'m going through an extremely steep learning curve right now so any pointers are greatly appreciated!
Quote from: Ian65;720454do you use the 12a pickup?
see, now I\'ve said about using a different pickup, I can\'t remember. Bugger. But I think the 12a pickup is right, as I had to get one and it was much easier getting the pickup than the sump.
How are you getting the turbo placed? I\'ve heard rumours the stock manifold can be reversed and drilled to allow it to miss the steering box - I didn\'t as I had to get a different manifold for the T04s. Honestly, if you wanna have an offline chat about it, please feel free to mail archbish@gmail.com. I\'m sure you\'ve got it all in hand, but do feel free to mail if you wanna!!
I\'m sorted front cover wise as I\'ve been sorted one from a 12AT so return hole is already there.
I am going premix, although turbowise I am still unsure. How are you getting on with the T04S and where did you get the manifold-or did you have yours fabricated?
12At cover - Nice!! ((is it a bad reflection that I\'m really impressed by that?? *sigh*))
T04s - love it. it\'s all quite hectic when it comes on song, and it\'s got the car up to 140mph on a private road, keeping up happily with a porsche caymen & Vauxhall VXR8. Manifold bought from a guy on Ausrotary who stocks them - called Steve. Very impressed with the quality of it.
I\'ve heard about this Steve bloke do you still have an email address for him? If you don\'t mind me asking-how much did the manifold set you back?
I\'d have said it\'s a good reflection on you being impressed by that although not something to bring up when at a dinner party with the wife!
the guy seems to have his own website (http://www.sdrm.com.au/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=26&Itemid=87&TreeId=16) now, and at the time it was £190 delivered (although that was back when the exchange rate was about a million AUD to 1 GBP).
I\'ll let you know about the 12At front plate vs dinner party. Better than bloody X-....tor anyhow.
Cheers Bish thats spot on, I\'ll have an OMP block off too for the sake of $10. You\'re right about the exchange rate though-that equates to £205+delivery at the current rate.
I have the turbo and manifold from my last set up and the Microtec ecu up for sale if your interested Tim ?

Yeah might be mate-email me you\'re phone number to captainbizzaro at aol dot com so we can discuss.
Did you get the front cover off?
As mentioned above, you will also need the pickup - the 12a one will be fine - Im sure the one I had was off a 12a as the FC on 13b ones are completely wrong - perhaps the 4 port old skool 13b units are the same? A lot harder to find though i bet.
See Tim, this is where it all starts - Quote "ill just run it standard" next thing you know, you are replying to someone offering an aftermarket turbo/manifold and Microtech without a moments hesitation... :D

Yeah famous last words eh.....it\'s all your fault lol.
I didn\'t get a chance to get it off this evening as I had to do my VAT return :2Confused but will have a go tomorrow.....really worried about that bearing dropping out though so am gonna proceed with caution!
Bit of progress today, after a ridiculous amount of huffing and puffing I finally got the e-shaft pulley off allowing me to remove the front cover.

Also removed the turbo and manifold, and gave the block a bit of a scrub. So now ready for the 12AT front cover and sump from Ramon. Nearly time to pull the 12A.....which reminds me, if anyone wants or knows someone who wants a sweet running 12A which can be seen running then point them in my direction!
coming on nicely Tim, good stuff!
Cheers Ian, I\'m confident until it comes to fathoming out all the little VAC lines and other random pipework that is hanging about then it\'ll get interesting!
I\'ve got that problem with the Elford setup as I didn\'t pull it from the car or buy the complete car, so I\'ve nothing to refer to.
Are you having new fuel lines made up to run the EFI? Do you know whether you can use the your existing tank to run fuel injection?
Yeah it\'s a right proper puzzle!!
Regarding the fuel situation I am running in brand new feed and return lines with a little help from a friend of mine who builds rally cars so he has the tools to do it so much quicker and neater than I would be able to achieve. I won\'t be using the OEM tank as it turns out mine isn\'t particularly good at holding fuel anything over three quarters full so have budgeted for a 6 (ish) gallon alloy tank with swirl pot set up and inline Bosch 044. I just want a fresh setup that will (hopefully) be reliable so I don\'t end up with a weak link as such.
6 gallons will severely limit your range Tim running that smokey beast. Would it be feasable to import a GSL-SE tank from the states that\'s all set up to run injection?
Is it even possible to ship 2nd hand fuel tanks?
Not sure mate, I\'d have thought there is a fair bit of red tape in the way of that sort of thing.
I\'m not overly fussed about range to be honest-I rarely take it on proper long journeys and if I do I better get a Nectar card!
The range wont be that good even with a full size tank - you\'d be looking at around 100miles, which is only a 50 mile journey if you want to come back without filling up :)
Cant you squeeze in 10 gallons?

I\'ll have a look at some tanks online and see what dimensions a 10 gallon tank would be and attack NEV with a tape measure in the morning.
If u want an anti explo fuel cell tank made up in alloy,Dax & Ak would be worth looking at,they obviously know the manufacturers or fuel tanks,so could probably get one made to original dimensions.

Ok cheers Stu.
No engine progress today as I\'m now waiting for bits so spent the day creating my ghetto workshop as the building I am carrying out swap had no front on it, so thats done with the aid of corrugated steel sheets bish bosh bash etc. But at least I now have a dry space with 360 degree access to the car rather than struggling in a single size garage.
So here he is, the last of the outside he\'ll see for a while unless the weather is good next weekend then it\'s engine pull time although I\'d like to get that 12A sold first.

Ok Cliff, it\'ll probably be in Nev for another two weeks yet so not a massive rush I just want anyone who\'d be interested to have plenty of time to see it running.

best buy that the money ever spent.
I\'m going to initially go with a Turbo II box so I still have budget to finish then will look into doing this as a future upgrade I reckon.

Tim,
Have you got a \'buzz gun\', an air driven impact gun for your socket set? I\'ve struggled without one for years and then bought one last year with acheap compressor...
I don\'t know how I ever managed without it and I\'ve been restoring cars for years. Makes getting out rusted and stubborn bolts a doddle and saves so much time.
I use an 18V DeWalt impact gun at work which is 1/4 inch hex drive and I\'ve ordered a 3/8 and 1/2 inch adaptor bit so I am hoping that this combo will give me the same sort of assistance as a windy gun.....we shall see!
Had a nice big parcel turn up today from Ramon.....

Also paid a visit to a local Mazda dealership and spoke to a really helpful chap and I put in a gasket order. This is one dealership of very few who have retained they\'re microfiche parts catalogue for all parts from that era so he was able to bring up exploded diagrams of 12A\'s and get me what I wanted-in my case a 12A front cover gasket. So if anyone is on need of a similar service let me know and I\'ll sort you out with contact details. Big up to Magna Mazda Poole!
Cool,Ramon did well for you.

how does the 12at cover differ from the standard one then? Is it just tapped for an oil return?

Yeah I was lucky he had what I needed-good times!
So tomorrow will involve more battles with rusted body fixings. Yay.
Yep - not as clean as it was though - it was filthy as anything when I got it but, so I spent quite a while cleaning and painting, fitted it to my engine only to take it off again as I went fir the FC centre mount method and this front cover was no longer compatible. Bugger.
Oh, it\'s a 13b RX4 sump - I don\'t think there was a factory 13b RX3? :)
"Oh, it\'s a 13b RX4 sump - I don\'t think there was a factory 13b RX3"
Ha, aaah so much to learn.
Thanks again mate.
Good day today, engine all disconnected, bellhousing bolts out, exhaust off (which by the way nearly sent me into spiralling depression) and frontal bodywork off just to save me from trashing it in the likely event that I clout it with the engine.

Also removed all the rear interior to have a butchers as I\'ve had this niggling feeling that I\'d go to all this hassle then find out that I was in fact driving a mobile cullinder. So I invite you all to have a collective sigh of relief when I discover absolutely no evidence of the dreaded rear suspension point disintregation.

There is a small bit of rot that I was aware of on the front lip of the sunroof opening that has remained unchanged since I\'ve owned him and frankly, have been putting off poking-so while I was in a poking mood I attacked that too.

But fear not, after I\'d been given CPR I had a good scrape I found mostly good metal and just alot of flakey paint, there is a hole but no bigger than a 5p piece. Phew.
Then it was time to call it a day-but happy with what got done today ready to pull engine next weekend.
Great stuff Tim, a good days work there!
When I did mine last week, I jacked the car up and had it well up in the air ( 350mm from the ground to the bottom of the chassis rails.
That allowed me to drop the gearbox from under the car and then lift the engine out by itself.
I mated them back together outside the car though to save mauling with the gearbox and trying to line up the input shaft from underneath.
Because the car was raised it was a doddle to lift the combined engine and gearbox back in, even by myself. The extra ground clearance made a massive difference.
Good news on the tin worm as well! Result!

Yeah I must admit I wasn\'t looking forward to having a dig around and feared the worst but by the looks of it he\'s as solid as I\'d ever hoped.
I think everything is gonna have to come over the top as it were on my lift as I\'ve got fairly limited head room but I\'ll suck it and see.

Nice work you\'re doing there Tim - all this on your own?
Good news on the rear suspension mounting areas and looks as if you have caught the sunroof in time. I know how disappointing it is to find corroded areas but the essence is to remain positive - not that Nev is that bad though.

He would have you think it was slave labour probably.

Okay Keith no worries I will do that.
Well my gaskets arrived
(http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt79/captainbizzaro/RX7/IMG_0723.jpg)
So that gives me something to do tomorrow-I should be pulling the 12A,putting the 12AT front cover and transferring the engine mount onto the 13BT. Thats as long as the gaskets are right so fingers crossed.

Now officially past the point of no return!
Anybody got any thoughts on what oil cooler I could use-would a generic ebay 15 or 19 row be sufficient?

Quote from: captainbizzaro;725397Anybody got any thoughts on what oil cooler I could use-would a generic ebay 15 or 19 row be sufficient?
Tim,
I asked the same question on various forums and was advised to use a T2 cooler as they are tried and tested with the turbo\'d rotary engine.
There\'s a bit on it here...
http://mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65158
I think a generic cooler would probably work but as the Mazda engineers have already proved the T2 to be up to the job, I\'m probably going to go with one of those.
I\'ve put a s2 rad and oil cooler in at the moment just to get up and running but I\'m thinking I\'ll probably go back to the larger s3 rad and stick a T2 cooler out front.
Cheers Ian, looks like more \'wanted\' adverts then!
Go for T2 one. There is alot of oil cooling needed and the eBay ones aren\'t big enough.
Shaun
i put a T2 one in mine they more than capable of cooling and a lot better then ebay stuff, i used a couple of exhaust clamps to bolt mine up to the front beam and had some pipes made up (possibly a right up in my build thread)
Okay cheers Mark
any more thoughts on the cooler Tim???
Well I\'ve got Tim White hunting for one in his cave but am still looking at alternatives as I\'d rather have a unit that was brand new and is less likely to curl up it\'s toes at an unfortunate moment. There are loads of units like this...
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AlliSport-Universal-19-Row-Aluminum-Oil-Cooler-3-4-BSP-/330465456821?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4cf146b2b5#ht_869wt_907
These all average an oil capacity of .38L, Prof thinks a TII cooler takes more like .5L so unless I hear different-a 19 row one like that won\'t be sufficient. Chris Impey uses something like this in his FD drag car though so they\'ve got to be fairly useful.

No progress this weekend as 70\' of fence down one side of my garden threw in the towel. Paul-haven\'t forgotten you mate will email you later.
OK - 2 days is plenty for a fence.
Car update or are you saving yourself for the weekend? :D
Quote from: RamoNZ;727749OK - 2 days is plenty for a fence.

Afternoon off tomorrow mate so I\'m on a mission.:chat
That fence did me in.
Sorted an egi counterweight and TII oil cooler which I\'m picking up tomorrow so things are moving....kind of.
Good to hear it - are you going to go straight for the T2 gearbox swap? Is it the S4 or S5 box?
Yeah TII box sorted just gotta pick it up-I\'ve got bits currently waiting all over the south of england-just gotta pull my finger out and pick it all up!
Have you had any luck with a propshaft - best quote Ive had so far to mate an S2 to a TII prop is £300 plus vat!
What???? I believe Bish got one from Turbo-prop(?) in Surrey for £180, and I got quoted £90+posting from a company up north which I forget now but might have to try and find out again!
Its really not a hard job - no idea why people want so much cash to do it... I\'m not going to say "If I was in New Zealand...." but I certainly am thinking it... :D
Haha-I nearly said to the bloke on the phone "WTF all you gotta do is take the two props I give you and make one then make sure it doesn\'t rattle my car to death!" but he was a right misery so I just laughed and said my goodbyes.
Anyways-good to hear it isn\'t going to cost quite that much.
Afternoon off today which saw me making a beeline for the shed and the wife left wondering where I vanished too...
So first job was a right ballache had to scrape the remaining gasket left after the 13B front cover was removed. After that it was good times and luckily the 12AT gasket I chose off of a fuzzy microfiche was correct-so on went the front cover....
Then more scraping of gunk ready for sump and Keith\'s kind donation being put in it\'s new home...
Then that magic gasket stuff came out to play and on went the sump...
Also in todays episode I picked up an EFI counterweight and oil cooler from rxmotors...
So plenty to get on with-once I\'ve picked the gearbox and clutch/flywheel assembly up in theory it is ready to go in although there is a whole load more emissions guff to get off of the engine and the relevant blank plates fitted thereafter.
Looking good Tim. Thats pretty good progress for one afternoon!
It\'s such a mental milestone when you see the engine sat in the bay for the first time:)
I\'m looking forward to that milestone!
Veeeery small update but something I was missing but picked up earlier....

Braved the baltic conditions this morning and got a bit done. Wanted to get the inlet manifold off to make the engine less of a handful to manouvre, plus I need to get to the OMP lines to blank them off as going premix and get shot of all the VAC lines that aren\'t needed as I\'m going for as simple setup as possible.
So went from clutter...
To tidy...
Loads more manageable!
Spoke to Ramon this evening too and he\'s kindly offered me his S5 inlet manifold which flow better (apparently!), so happy days.
Just need to give the block a bit more of a clean up and we\'re one step closer.
Ramon comes to the rescue again!
Tim,ur bloody brave working on ur car in these temperatures!
Maybe u have antifreeze for blood.
Keep up the good work.
ta stu..
S5 inlets are better :) They also respond well to port matching apparently....
Good progress Tim :) Braver than I today to be out there with numb fingers!
that\'s looking more like it Tim, can\'t beat the minimal look!
I\'ve been outside working on mine today as well..... on the drive! Brrrrrrrr!!!!
Good work Tim but looks as if you\'ve lost some of the engine having removed those bits. Does look better now.
Watch those pinkies don\'t turn into blueies in these conditions, both you and Ian deserve mmmmmmmedals working outside today - even I resorted to working in the kitchen cleaning down parts for JAZ rather than being outside.
Cheers chaps-you don\'t realise how close I was to bringing the inlet manifold inside and sitting at the dining room table with it!
Cliff, it\'s mad the amount of junk that is on these engines to try and make it perform to it\'s optimum ability in every climate situation possible and then there\'s stuff like the gadget that increases revs when you load the engine with AC and PAS to prevent it stalling etc etc. Basically Ramon came and visited and it was bin that, bin that, bin that and that.......and that aswell- and so on. I had no idea, but am enjoying this rather steep learning curve.
I\'ve just got to bung up all these VAC nipples now so if anyones got an idea of the best course of action please chip in. I\'ve posted a thread on the 2nd section but to no avail so far.

Hows about using nipple caps and/or plastic bar glued into place?
Yeah little caps is a good shout.
What do guys think of these-I like them, mainly because of the stupendous lip.
They are 13x7J ET -7
Thoughts?
I\'m thinking that could work! :) To make the most of wide 13s I think you\'d have to be pretty low though?
One thing to remember is that if you\'re going the PCD adapter route, like we discussed, then you\'ll be on an effective et of -27 not -7 :P so might need arches....
Yeah I am going to drop a bit like you said to make it suit wide 13\'s. For these wheels I think I am willing to have arches I\'ve kind of taken to them a bit. I just love the size of that lip-and they were on a Nissan Micra!:god
It is a very nice amount of lip! Go for it!
They look G8,look like revolution wheels.
Yeah you\'re right Stu they are Revo\'s.
I saw this and thought of you.... 13" Revo\'s will work !
aaah yes, Kentetsu\'s car-forgot he runs Revo\'s. Well sorted car that.
Yeh sounds like it. Though interesting reading about the rear suspension problems, I have a small idea that no-one seems to have thought of to get round the issues.May try it out on Rexanne when she\'s on the road!
Excellent-I\'ve been reading through all the gumph about getting round the misalignment when you lower them so will watch with interest. Then if it\'s successful blatantly copy you! Kentetsu and another chap on there with an equally low 7 have both mailed me they\'re suspension specs so we\'ll have to collaberate information when the time comes. Think respeed are gonna do ok out of us!
As a side note, Kentetsu\'s car does not suffer from snap oversteer on his current setup and the watts link is still in place-he\'s made no major changes just \'off the shelf\' kit.
Good stuff! I was gonna message Kentetsu myself about his set-up but hadn\'t got that far.
I was reading about him having no snap oversteer with stock 4 link and watts link, and it made me think. The problem seems to be that as the suspension moves through its travel the difference in upper to lower link length causes the diff to tilt slightly. As the diff tilts the watts link tilts too, the 2 bars joining the watts link to the chassis only articulate one one plane, and as the diff tilts they need to articulate in 2 planes and the stock system binds.
So why not rose joint just those 2 bars? We\'re only talking about a degree or two of movement in the 2nd plane as the diff twists slightly, and then the suspension should be able to move freely?
Tis very much just an idea right now, and I know rose joints do have their problems, but it would be a pretty easy thing to actually swap over and try out.
It may be completely useless but I also had a moment of inspiration about steering last night. It seems one of the main things stopping the use of FC, FD or mx5 racks is the fact that they are designed for front steer not rear steer like the FB. So what about running a left hand drive rack flipped round? The steering wheel mount is then on the right hand side of the car, and the rack moves in the right direction for rear steer. Using a manual mx5 rack there\'d be no PAS gubbins to deal with and 3 turns lock to lock nice acurate rack and pinion steering. I\'m sure there is lots of fab to do, but it\'s just bubbling along in the back of my mind. I might try to pick up a LHD mx5 rack to play with when I\'ve got the front of Rexanne in bits doing all the bushes.
I had planned to make a huge order from re-speed, but I\'ve had a couple of emails back and forth to Atomic Rex about the parts they can offer for FBs in the lat few days. Seems they have their own big brake kit, camber plates, ARBs and GAZ coilovers to offer so I might end up using them. Waiting to hear back on some ball park prices and stuff.
Y\'know I was thinking of dropping Jon a line to see what he could supply so keep me posted. Like the idea about the steering rack though-got to be worth a try, whats the worst that could happen!
Took a drive tonight and picked up some goodies which will allow a serious leap forward in progress, I could have gone forward with stock turbo (modified manifold) and stock flywheel/clutch assembly but decided to hold off, save some more pennies and get the best I could reasonably afford. This is all second hand stuff but had only 10000miles of use and is all good quality kit...
Lightened flywheel...
Also got a snazzy clutch to go with it-either the clutch or flywheel is Exedy but can\'t remember which!
I spent a lot of time giving myself a headache regarding turbo options, and was all set for a T3/T4 hybrid but this was offered to me and I couldn\'t turn it down, even though it took me eons of time to actually get up the M3 and pick it up! (Thanks for your patience Pete:cheers)

It\'s a Turbonetics affair with larger than stock hotside.
Also chucked in for free was a gearbox which essentially means I can get on and get it in allowing me to concentrate on fun stuff like intercoolers and the suchlike.
Also this weekend Santa Claus came in the guise of Ramon with some shiny gifts, more specifically a polished S5 (:D:D) UIM and LIM to match along with a modified TII gearbox mount which should bolt straight in-all of this is in the shed at the minute and it is cold outside so photo\'s of these goodies will follow later in the week.:bandit
Ho Ho Ho
:Santa
I\'d check which gearbox you have (S4/S5) because that mount will only fit one of them - and dont for get to pick up some Autosol, to get some extra shine from the manifold and get them in the dishwasher to make them clean inside and out.
Just dont tell your missus I told you to do it... :rollin
I\'ll get right on that Autosol stuff tomorrow-dishwasher is primed ready for action.:D
Gearbox-wise, how\'d I tell what I\'ve got? Any easy differences?
Easy way to tell - see if the mount will bolt to it or not.... :)
One is flat on the bottom, and the other is like a V-mount.
Oh yeah, and that looks lie a fat turbo - Turbonetics are good turbos and that one should give an easy 350bhp crank though I suspect that is way more than is needed - given the ease at which Tim took my 280bhp daily to the \'ton\' (on a closed private road of course) and his car with 250bhp should easily eclipse that given the go kart like weight! :burnout
Righto I\'ll get a look tomorrow.
Cheers for the drive, you don\'t have to say "it\'s still under warranty" twice...:god
Wooo big turbos are good news ! :P
Should be such a blast to drive when its done, for me bits like light weight flywheels make cars just more eager feeling and fun :)

A G8 looking fb & without a bodykit,bit of lowering me thinks.
Mirrors look better, but those rims poking out from arches would be illegal in UK.
Stick with it capitano, when you finally start up your new modded engine stand near it with a fire extinguisher!
ta stu..
Cheers Stu, think the fire extinguisher will be a wise move. :evillaugh
Captain, are u deffo going for the revo\'s in my humble opinion i think they look the best!
Simple,blunt 4 spokes but effective.
I say get a fire extinguisher, years ago i fitted uprated fuel pump, holley 390cfm,larger heads to a cobra replica, hit the key in anticipation of it firing into life 1st time, without correct jetting or fuelling & guess what, the engine did fire but fuel poured out the top of the holley & caught fire, singed my eyebrows!
I had\'nt set up the float control valves in the dual fuel chambers properly, thinking oh well it dose\'nt matter any excess fuel will just get burnt inside the engine,so whats the point, fuel consumptions terrible anyway,did\'nt expect it to catch light on top of the engine!
Better safe than sorry, for £30 odd quid.
ta stu..
I remember being on fire watch for my dad on various welding marathons when trying to coax tired Mini\'s through MOT\'s back in the early stages of my driving exploits. We settled for a damp rag and enthusiastic stamping haha. I have got a big Chubb foam extinguisher but it needs recharging-definately worth the cost though.
I am going for Revo\'s-the ones with the fat lip are top of the hitlist. But my mind is made up.
With my new toys burning a hole in the porch floor and me not doing ridiculous hours this week I got home from work, kissed the children on their foreheads and merrily skipped down the garden to the shed. First job was to tighten up the e-shaft nut, then on went the flywheel..
Next up, just to satisfy my impatience I offered up the turbo and couldn\'t pass up a photo opportunity as I must admit to getting a bit excited. So tomorrow I will pick up some autosol and get buffing on the UIM and the LIM needs to go in the dishwasher to get rid of the filings it\'s filled with from being used as a template. Progress woooooooo.

At least you\'ve got the peace of mind that it\'ll go in.
Well the good lady is away for the weekend so I am ceasing the opportunity to abuse the dishwasher. Ordered myself a tube of Autosol for the UIM-if anyone has experience in what grade buffing wheel to get for my drill then that would be appreciated as I don\'t want to undo all the hard work thats been done on it thus far. So here is a pre-dishwasher shot, it\'s currently working it\'s way through the lunchtime load so will have to wait and hour or so....

I\'d delete those quick before she get\'s home or else you might be living in the shed permanently!
It\'ll be fiiiiiine-she\'s got a good sense of humour.:D
Where are the after shots??
Autosol is good stuff, you dont need a buffing wheel, and you its impossible to undo the polishing that is already done - its not like paint. Get some rags, or childrens clothing, put on about double the amount you would do use toothpaste and rub it on the top of one of the runners - it will go black virtually straight away but keep going in a circle but dont spread it too thin.
Once the rubbing is done, it will dry to a white chalky look, then take a clean part of the rag and buff the white off. Once you get the hang of it, you just vary the polish amount, the area and how much effort you put into it - you will quickly see what you put is directly proportional to what you get out. The top of that UIM will be looking great in no time.
Also - get some pics of the UIM/UIM sitting in place!

Awesome-just a bit of elbow grease then....
To be honest, apart from the LIM being devoid of filings there isn\'t a lot of difference so i will hold off on after shots until it\'s had a good shine up. My tube of Autosol should be here Tuesday, plus I\'ve ordered the gaskets for them and the blank plate kit from Pineapple Racing (acv one linked-you get the jist)....

Tim,
have you got any time scale in mind to hit the road again or will the conversion just take as long as it takes, so to speak?
Quote from: Ian65;735806Tim,

I\'d ideally like him back on the road for the summer to get it to some shows etc-the only thing that would hold me up is money but I\'m hoping I\'ve saved up enough to fast track it as such. Saying that, I don\'t want anything compromised so if it takes longer-so be it. I have bought most of the major expensive items now though and stuff like intercoolers is all readily available with no wait. What will speed up my situation is if I manage to buy the rest of Pete\'s surplus kit which was all fabricated for a car to the same spec I\'m aiming for-especially the exhaust which saves me having to muck about trailering NEV to fabricators etc. Now christmas is out the way I am gonna throw as much time at it as possible though, I really don\'t want to go a season without him.

Good to see u making progress.
You,ve got glasses & cups in with your engine parts!
You didnt wash them together did you!
ta stu..
Ha, no don\'t worry I took them out.
Did i read somewhere your turbo will kick out approx 300hp,that\'ll make a very lively little fb!
ta stu..
I think it made 260 at 0.5bar (with the wastegate stuck open) but he\'s got a half-bridge iirc. Probably could make 300 with the right support but we\'ll see.
that\'ll be a handful then... have you considered a roll cage!
I would cage it if I was planning on doing a lot of track days but I just don\'t get the time so apart from some enthusiastic bracing I don\'t think I will. A cage with a non-helmeted head in my opinion is nigh on just as dangerous.
Quote from: captainbizzaro;735864A cage with a non-helmeted head in my opinion is nigh on just as dangerous.
Agreed. I used to do a bit of Rallying and had a few rollovers as a navigator (as a driver you get to hold onto the steering wheel...) and the cage was an absolute menace - twice I smashed crash helmets on the damn things. They were a benefit in stiffening up the bodyshells (which improved the handling no end) and at stopping side impact intrusons when you had a tree trying to get inside with you, but without a crash helmet they were a real problem, not a good thing at all. I had 14 rollover / end over end incidents, most without rollover bars, and would be hard pressed to say that the cage gave (or would have given...) significant benefit in any of them.

Yeah I agree, plus I really can\'t be arsed with the gymnastics of getting in and out of a caged car.
So this evening after following some advice from Prof in the 2nd gen arena I reinstated the front pulleys. In my eagerness to take stuff apart I forgot to make any reference marks so was dreading having to work out where TDC was through the spark plug hole etc-but luckily the holes only line up one way so that bit was easy peasy, then once that was on and TDC was established I fitted the CAS into the 12AT front cover, which also went nice and smoothly.:)
Tried to fit the clutch too but I don\'t have the right bolts for the flywheel and they aren\'t the pitch of the regular 8mm SS bolts I have in abundance so if anyone reading has six of these that would be great.:Thumbs-up
Hmmmm,i\'ve read a few posts about rollcages for street use,the general consensus is it hurts your head without a helmet! So not really worth it.
ta stu..
I have to say captain,if your engine does kick out 260>300hp,it would be even quicker if u lightened it up!
But again for street use,is it worth considering, probably not.

he could load it full of bricks and it\'d still tear up the street with that kind of power!

Yes it\'d still shift & the bricks would help with traction!
Main problem i see,is getting that power down on the tarmac.
QuoteI also require an S5 throttle body so if you have one then speak up!
I have 2. One on my car and one on my blown motor. Infact the blown motor has prtty much everything on it still.
I did quite a bit of roll cage investigation when looking into one for my mx5.
The conclusion I came to was that for road use it was only worth doing if you were gonna have a proper bucket seat, one of the ones that came up right round the side of your head, 5 point harness and used the proper spec roll cage padding. Like everyones said because otherwise a relatively minor accident can cause sever head injuries as you hit in on the cage.
Still with a 70s design, I presume the 1st gens don\'t crash too well and I am quite tempted to cage mine at some stage.....
Quote from: syebba;736007Yes it\'d still shift & the bricks would help with traction!

You\'re right Stu, even the standard car with 115bhp spins its wheels and slides pretty easily in the wet and sometimes in the dry.
Putting the power down will be a challenge.
My Jag put\'s out 400bhp and the traction control is always on as a default and often kicks in just driving normally. I have to manually select it \'off\' and then the car becomes a right handfull... terrifying in the wet, ( so I always leave it switched on.)
No such technology though on a 1st gen.
It doesn\'t matter how much power you\'ve got if you can\'t get it down on the road.
It\'ll be great fun trying though!
When I had 260@wheels I did not have that much of a problem with traction. Just make sure you get good tyres (Toyo 888, Yokohama A048, ect) and don\'t just stamp on the throttle coming out of corners in low gears and you will be fine. Make sure your awake when driving in the wet though.
I have to be very carefull when I get mine back with 500+@wheels. Will be a challenge :)
Pete.

Pete-I don\'t suppose Jon gave you the six bolts for attaching the clutch house too the flywheel did he? No probs if not, just thought I\'d ask before hunting some down.
Afraid not. I should be going up there end on Jan, so I will ask if he still has them if you want.
Pete.

First, my comments about roll cages were meant to apply only to saloon cars - soft tops are a different issue, and I would always want something. Many years ago I drove round a bend to discover an upside down MG Midget in the middle of the road. Myself and another driver lifted it upright to discover that the lady driver had not fared well.... This has stayed with me and even though I know that modern windscreen frames are specially strengthened I am still very nervous in a soft top without a roll hoop.
As regards FB crash safety I am no expert - I have only crashed one (the front crumpled nicely....). The windscreen pillars are spectacularly thin by modern standards but FB\'s post-date crumple zone legislation (and I get the impression that most of the more recent crash laws have been to protect pedestrians rather than drivers...) and they don\'t have many sharp edges inside, so I think the "weak links" will be a 3 point seatbelt without pre-tensioners and no airbags. Therefore a good seat with a proper harness should work wonders.
John
Inlet manifold gaskets ordered yesterday, engine crane (hopefully) sorted for the weekend, throttle body on it\'s way from Ade, the only problem I\'ve got is these bloody bolts....
I\'ll have a dig around Tim, I\'ve got a spare EGI clutch and flywheel and I presume the flywheel is the same?
Cheers Steve, got to be worth a try.:King
Throttle body arrived today thanks Ade, sat down tonight and attacked the UIM with Autosol and it\'s starting to come up a treat.
I\'ve only done the first \'rib\' but you get the idea.
Any luck with those bolts Steve?
Got some tomorrow tomorrow to have a dig around tim, will let you know by lunchtime :)
Cheers Steve.:Thumbs-up
Meant to say \'got some time tomorrow\'. I think my heads not with it today, and I\'ve not even started on the cider yet!
Haha no worries, I know the feeling.
Oh good. Glad its got to you before the weekend. Thanks for the cash. If you need anything else give me a shout I\'ve quite a few bits and bobs knocking about.
Ade
Steve, the six bolts arrived today thanks for that I owe you one. (The list of people I owe for helping me through this is ever expanding!)
Good news is they are the correct pitch, bad news is the two longer ones don\'t appear to be required on a TII but at least we know they fit thread pitch wise.
So anyone who happens to have two more of the short M8\'s with "10" stamped on the head I would be eternally grateful.
Could always get them off ebay !
http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=m8+fine+10.9&_sacat=0&_odkw=m8+fine&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313
Shaun
Thought you said fine pitch, if not then link is wrong !
Shaun
Yeah I did think about eBay but am paranoid about buggering my flywheel threads and also worried about unwittingly buying bolts lacking quality where strength is concerned.
Shame they don\'t quite match up. Hope you find another couple soon!
That is all I did on the FD ! I wanted a pack of 10 so I could guarantee they where all the same mass on the clutch cover to flywheel. They have had about 360bhp put through them up to now and haven\'t done anything wrong. The original bolts where stainless with a socket head.
Shaun
If your worried have you tried :

Ok cool cheers Shaun.
I think I\'m going to have to reread this thread and write up a shopping list...
RamoNZ will help u too if u need.
Ordered intercooler today after a spell of head scratching with a tape measure and settled for a cooler originally designed for a sierra cosworth but it\'s big and the outlets point the right way so happy days. Might have scuppered my oil cooler plans though so my FC cooler might be up for grabs (Ian)!
That looks like it should be able to flow a decent amount of air!
Looking forward to seeing this all come together :)
Me too, feels like it\'s all been a collection of bits for ages!

Cheers Tim, bear me in mind if you decide to sell!
Intercooler arrived today-it\'s a bit big but what the hey.
Had a quick mess around with where I envisage it sitting..
Also today got gearbox mount, clutch slave, inlet mani gaskets and a solid sunroof so all in all a good shopping trip was had at rxmotors.
That is pretty big!
What are you planning to do with the front bumper tim? Going to make any more room for the air to get to the rad and IC ?
Not sure yet Steve, I\'m hoping that there will be a fair amount of surface on show through the standard hole in the front valence as I don\'t want to chop the bumper about. i may need to remove some innards but am trying to achieve the sleeper effect the best I can. I know I definately won\'t need to widen the hole anyway so thats ok. We\'ve come to the conclusion that with a bit of air deflection underneath we\'ll be able to get decent flow to the rad and there will be a hellabig electric fan on it too for added piece of mind. The majority of these builds have the intercooler next to the rad in the stock position but i just felt like trying something different and if all else fails my tig welding friend can modify the end tanks to suit my needs. I think piping it will be the biggest challenge for sure.
Good progress tonight- clutch on, gearbox on ready to go in Nev now, then he\'ll officially be a 13BT FB wooo.
:3gears-lh Awesome.
Thats cool about the sleeper look. It should really surprise some people :bandit
Bit of a question with the inter cooler. Its look quite like a closed Core. Are there any issues with the flow of air getting through to the radiator to cool the water properly ?
The FD intercoolers are an open core for the front mounts.
Shaun
It was sold as a FMIC so I\'m presuming it\'ll be okay-seems pretty open to me.
Also tonight had a play about, removed the rad cowling and battery tray and hey presto
(http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt79/captainbizzaro/44862d17.jpg)
She fits there too-although the spouts would have to be trimmed but that\'s no big deal.
Oh and add possible battery relocation to the list...

Looking good capitano.
Ref outlet ports, you can get flexible coolant tubes in different diameters[they bend where u want them],cobra boys use them, that may help you trying to find hoses.

Yeah to be fair from that angle it looks pretty dense.
Cheers Stu-will bear the flexi jobs in mind.
Had the incredibly mundane task of cleaning the mating surfaces of the UIM and LIM as they were caked in the usual left over gasket that is solid as a rock. Initially set about it with a razor blade, can of lager and some Gunk engine cleaner but this didn\'t pan out too well so it was suggested to me that I try a wire brush attachment for a drill which I did and I\'ll let the pictures speak for themselves. Wish I\'d bought one sooner.

So with that done and some Pineapple Racing blank plates sorted that deems the inlet stuff ready for the next stage apart from blocking off the coolant port as all this does is undo all the hard work your intercooler is doing.
Next was to venture under NEV and get the 12A gearbox out which is nice and easy, so with that done too it is time to get the engine hoist.
More goodies collected....

And the full exhaust system originally built for Pete\'s car and saves me a trip to powerflow also picked up.
forgive me for being thick, but, what are they?
ECU and hand controller.:Thumbs-up

I have to confess Tim, I too have always removed the old \'hardened\' gasket remains with stanley knives, scrapers & smooth files - not any more, I\'ve just been converted, back of the net. :Thumbs-up
Stanley do a Stanley knife scrapper that is really good for manky gaskets. Sometimes a quick lap with wet and dry on a flat surface can help too

Yeah scraping is now officially for people who like wasting time.

\'Made to fit\' wth you own hands? Nice job. Did you use a \'flaring tool\' between the bends or is that just a butt weld?

The turbo looked huge in your earlier photos, but from that one I think you can go bigger :P haha. It\'s amazing how large 1st gen engine bays actually are!
Yeah stacks of room, although the bottom hose will be a joy to put on. I think the bigger turbo will have to wait awhile haha.

it\'s the steering box and servo that cause the problems when mounting manifolds and turbos
Thats why someone\'s gotta figure out a way to be rid of the steering box for RHD cars soon!
But yeh I\'m sure it will be plenty big enough. :)
This is what you are up against if you do yours Steve...
And thats with a purpose built manifold!
Ah yes, that does look a little close!
I still think be rid of the steering box would be the way :P
Had one of them days today...
Fit rad in stock position.
Try and come up with another location for intercooler
Remove rad
Put intercooler where I want it
Try V mount ideas
And repeat.
That has been it pretty much, allocated 7 time wasted scratching head.:Hammer
Don\'t despair Tim, we all have days like that mate. My plans for today were scuppered and I finished up doing nothing on Goldie at all - what a waste.
Got a bit done today in between family duties, gave the S3 tank the once over with the wire brush drill attachment and no holes appeared so gave it a coat of paint and fitted the sender. For future reference, M4 pan head machine screws used by us electricians are a perfect match for the threads in the tank on the sender and pickup assembly and as I have a trillion of them in the store I was able to crack on. With that done I set about removing the spare wheel well, gave the cut a file and some primer till the POR15 arrives. Fitted the S3 tank, not a job I intend on doing again whilst lead on my back so two post lift is on the christmas list. Anyway it\'s in now albeit after some colourful language so that leaves me needing to get a sheet of aluminium to plate over the boot area and get the fuel system finished.
Should get the intercooler back this week then I can make some big progress mounting that and finishing the pipework.
No photo\'s today as my phone with the decent camera has thrown in the towel.
Great work, just been looking through the build. Your creating a monster. I had sneaky thoughts of sticking a forcing aid on my motor, its lhd so loads of room on that side where the steering box is. keeping it na though.
jon
Sounds like its coming along well Tim, nice to chat to you at the weekend too :)
Quote from: Steve-A;748844Sounds like its coming along well Tim, nice to chat to you at the weekend too :)
And you Steve, getting there now!
Cheers Jon-you should go for it mate your car is made for it without that bloody steering box in the way.
Moving forward, my swirlpot and S3 fuel pickup assembly arrived and I collected some 10bar fuel hose and fuel line clamps from my motor factors so when I\'m feeling like battling my fuel tank again I can get on with that.
My order from Polevolt arrived too so I\'ve been able to make the injector loom...
Also wiring related I got lucky at Atomicrex as Jon helped sift through the remains of Pete\'s car and find the two missing Microtech Molex plugs..

So that has saved me $$$ as I thought i\'d have to resort to getting a new loom from Aus.
Finally, finished prepping the throttle body so it\'s now nice and simple...
Removed the unwanted butterflys and chemical metalled up the holes left in the shafts absence.
Still have to do a bit of fettling with this for airflow (thanks for the tip you know who you are!) and it can go on.
On my EGI when I did the throttle body, I also put chemical metal in the centre hole where the 2nd butterflies went and then smoothed off the steps near the upper butterflies and rounded off the casting that separates the 3 air flow paths.
Injector loom looks neater than any I\'ve ever built! :P
Yeah eventually I\'ll swap it for one completely machined out but I\'ll have a bit of a play with it today.
Thanks for the comment on the loom-heat shrink is your friend! Oh and so is the wifes hairdryer.

So although it looks fairly similar to earlier pictures, stuff is actually bolted down and plumbed in now. List getting shorter.
So much for all that space in the engine compartment - definitely been shoehorned in but coming on great Tim :)
If it wasn\'t for how ridiculous my intercooler is I\'d have a lot more room but never mind!
Tonight I got the oil cooler mounted-the cooler itself won\'t win any beauty contests but as long as it holds oil I\'ll be happy as these are proven.
As you say Tim it doesn\'t have to win beauty prizes as long as it fits in and the functionality is there - spot on.
Now that you have fitted this it actually looks as if it was meant to be that way - it\'s just like the 2nd Gen radiator fitment.
:)
Cheers Cliff-yeah that spot is made for it.:cool
Rest of carpet out...

Centre console removed for access to hole in tunnel for shifter-first pic shows difference in length of boxes. It is possible to shorten the selector mechanism allowing stick to come up in the right place but because of the driving position I prefer, I\'m opting for the tunnel trimming method.

And after some trimming..
Completed final part of loom-this being the ignition section for the coil packs and as it\'s going that direction, the relay trigger for the cooling fans that will be controlled by the engine management too...
Talking of fans, went scrapyard scouring and got these for £10-bargain considering they are complete with shroud, about the right size (bit of grinding needed) and they are decent Valeo units...
They are off a Seat Ibiza, new shape.
Finally, GReddy shiny bit to allow the IC piping to be ordered...

They fit.

Bargain price for the FANS Tim and good to see/hear there is another alternative for the conversion to electric.
Epic speed now you\'re coming out of the engine bay - at this rate you might be finished for May Day?
Good work Tim :Thumbs-up. Have you worked out what to do for the centre console? Do you intend modifying the existing one or are you looking at an alternative?
Cliff
:cheers
Thanks Cliff, I\'m aiming for next weekend to be first starting attempt. Those fans are only resting there at the moment I\'ll have to make some simple brackets up out of the 5x25mm bar I\'ve got but they won\'t be tricky. I want to try and start him before I go through the hassle of fighting the exhaust because if it turns out that this engine is bad I\'d have wasted my time and I\'ll be delayed anyway by that point. Fingers crossed.
If the engine plays the game then it\'s just a case of waiting for my propshaft to be made before I can go for a play.
Totally agree with your logic on this but regardless if things do go slightly pear-shaped Tim - the last thing it would be is a waste of time, only a monir set back. Stay cool and if all else fails - have a beer :guinness don\'t things always look different after a beer?
:cheers

Tonight I edge closer to owning something resembling a 7-and with minimal swearing involved which wasn\'t what I was expecting!
