Title: Dodgy noise on tick over
Post by: adamrogers3091 on September 28, 2010, 09:17:01 AM
Seems my cars developing another problem!

When it ticks over there\'s a strange wer-ing noise (don\'t know how else to explain it) which coming in and out. Sounds louder when I\'m in the car rather than under the bonnet. Sounds belt related in some way.

Any ideas? Anyone experienced this before?

As it sounds louder whilst I\'m in the car I would say middle but I\'ll  need to have a proper listen again to be sure. It only seems to make the  noise around 900 - 1500 rpm (max) Clutch up and down, and in 1st gear  and neutral.

I have had an oil leak for a week or 2 (a slow one) and I\'m yet to find  the source of that, could have something to do with it?

sounds like what i had happen to my car, if you get a socket extension bar and use it as a sound amplifier and place it on your ear and then start working your way through the places near the belts, my bet would be to start with the alternator.

using the extension bar will make it easier to pinpoint the location of the noise,

Hope this helps

Check the belts are not too tight as this will make a wirring noise

At the longest section of the belt you should be able to easily turn the belt 90degrees any tighter than this and you can get belt noise plus on an FD it will kill the bearing in the front of the power steering pump

Hope this helps

Hi Clive,

That explanation does make sense, the sound is coming from where the belt wraps around in front of the power steering filler.

Also I couldn\'t seem to turn the belt by hand, why would the belts tighten though? and is it an easy job to put right myself assuming I have the right tools? (probably not and even if I didn\'t wouldn\'t be good with them:Hammer)
