Title: loss of power in second gear
Post by: adamrogers3091 on September 23, 2010, 10:45:49 PM
Hi all,

I wondered weather anyone has experienced this problem.... it\'s happen to me twice today.

I came off a roundabout foot right down :3gears-rh in second gear and approaching 2nd turbo spool the car seemed to loose/cut power for a second or so at which point i eased off the gas before putting the foot down again.

Worried me even more that it happened a second time this evening as well. Similar scenario.

First of all can someone help with the above please?

Also (at it\'s worst in second gear) when the second turbo kicks in the exhaust really gurgles and pops like it can\'t quite handle the pressue of the gases trying to escape.... I just have a back box with the standard downpipe running stock twin turbo. Is this normal?

any thoughts? (again)

Deffo not normal mate,

very likely blocked cat (if you still have it) or a solenoid in the nest.

Could also be fuel cut, do you have a boost gauge installed ?

Edited: its not just the primary/secondary transition is it? as iirc on the standard ecu its quite a dip on the crossover

Can you give us more info bud? I.e the exact rpm it happens, can you hear any unusual noises from the engine, is this in all gears, what boost you are running and what your boost guage shows etc

There\'s no cat and I do have a boost gauge. Could it have anything to so with my spark plugs?

It happened around 4-4500 rpm, didn\'t notice any unusual noises, only happened in second gear and to be honest I wasn\'t watching the boost gauge both times so I didn\'t see the pattern but I\'m pretty sure the car is boosting as it should otherwise

When did you last change the plugs and which ones are you currently using?
But sounds like the transition is the key, could even be a slipping clutch as when the 2nd tubby comes online you do get quite a kick and this can cause a worn clutch to slip

I bought this car last Saturday so I am unaware when the plugs were changed last. have ordered some more to replace anyway. the plugs on there are NGK BUR9EQP.

Also I have a slight oil leak and I am yet to find the exact source, should find out next week. after having a quick look it seems to be coming from quite high up on the dipstick side of the engine.

It could be the clutch slipping I suppose....not sure though.

Oh right, sounds like it could just be the transition then fella. From 4000rpm you get a dip in power while the turbo control actuator moves to the fully open position, so for 500rpm (or so) you get a dip in power then all hell breaks loose at 4500 rpm when the 2nd turbo comes online.
As Neil said on a stock ecu the transition can be quite obvious. The car should pull from 2000rpm to 4000rpm, then a dip until 4500rpm and then stay on power until well over 7000 rpm when the power will easy off slightly until redline. The exhaust will gurgle and bop normally bud, it\'s all part of the fun of an FD, I love it when mine lets out a really loud fart in traffic, BOP, BOP, bop bop bop, makes me smile everytime.

Thanks Bobbit, My rex seems to be running as it should as you described apart from these 2 occations. Could be looking at a new cluthc then I guess? If so any idea on price?

Not to sure on price, but a simple check is to park up, leave the hand brake on and try to pull away in 1st, if the car lurches forward then the clutch is ok, if it doesn\'t the the clutch is on it\'s way out.

Cheers, I\'ll get that checked out. If it turns out the clutch is OK, then at this stage is it left as a bit of a mystery?

Anyhow I\'m changing oil, oil filter, flushing coolant and fitting new plugs next week as well getting the oil leak fixed so If I have still have a problem after that no doubt I\'ll return seeking more help!! Hopefully it won\'t come to that though!

If the problem is still there after a full service then it could be something in the rats nest, i\'m guessing a sticky solenoid spring would be the most likely culprit. But try a service first as it could just be the sparks need swapping.

Also thinking about it, I don\'t think it will be the clutch slipping as it would have still revved wouldn\'t it. If I remember rightly It didn\'t.

Let see what happened after the little clutch test and the service...
Title: loss of power in second gear
Post by: Bobbit on September 24, 2010, 02:00:26 PM
I thought that would have been the case when my clutch was slipping but as the revs increased under load the boost went irratic and caused some very strange effects, popping and banging from the exhaust and a lot of juddering/hesitation as the ecu shut down the revs to prevent any damage to the engine.

Ok, makes sense... I\'ll do the test!

have you got a power FC? if your running decat without a power fc it could cause a problem

No power FC, just the back box.

I didn\'t think you needed power FC until you started to add various parts. At the moment I just have the back box and 1 large single air filter.

in your earlier post you said it didnt have a cat, if this is the case you could be hitting fuel cut due to boost spikes but im certain someone else will be able to confirm

sorry Kris, yeah running decat with standard pipe and aftermarket back box (unsure which one.)

Can anyone confirm Kris\'s boost spike possibility?

Kris is correct, shouldn\'t run without the cat if you haven\'t got a Power FC. Stick a cat back on and it should be ok (should be dirt cheap to buy as well).

Yup also your risking running lean and killing it before you get going tbh mate, my money is on fuel cut through running on stock ecu without the cat now with that added information.

Stick the cat back in and try again or you can get a restrictor plate for where the cat joins the dp.

Better still get a pfc and mapping and keep your decat as it releases loads a powRRR lol.

i agree with Neil JDMR, best options are to either put the cat back on to save the engine or get a power fc and get it mapped which will boost the power by a decent amount.

At the moment the last thing you wanna do is hammer the .... off the car because it will det and ruin the engine, hope this helps mate

Adam there is the standard cat, there is nothing wrong with the clutch, the plugs are less than a year old, As for the oil leak as i said on the phone the only thing i have done that side is replace the oil gauge sender for a known good one, i was not prepared for the amount of oil that came out because you can only replace this by feel! which is very difficult! very messy! thinking about it that could be still leaking, i would have thought any oil i spilt would be gone by now! the reason i think that is because i don\'t think these senders should need any plumbers sealing tape because it needs the thread to ground for the gauge to work, (tapered thread) as for the turbo problem, i only had that happen once a couple of years ago, but when i switched the ign off then on again it never happened again, lack of use of the turbo\'s may be a factor, while the engine has been run regularly, not so with the turbo\'s, but they were fine when we tested the car, be intersting to see if that happens again, but try and note the boost gauge and revs,
Bob

thanks everyone. right little update.. after driving the car tonight the power cut has happened in second gear once again. I payed close attention to the RPM and it happens around 5,500 not 4-4.5rpm.

It\'s on and off though which is strange, the second turbo spooled just fine at full pelt but then I lost power when changing to 3rd gear and spooling and on second turbo. othertimes in all gears it\'s been just fine.

Conclusion = def a problem with the second turbo and me very confused.

Based on this new info do you all stick by the by getting the power FC? bear in mind Bob has corrected me above saying I do in fact have a standard cat.... what to do??

A power FC is good for the future and also a standard car can get quite good gains aswell but if it has a cat then its not really needed.

the real question is are you planning on modifying/upgrading the car?

just a random punt but are you low of fuel?
i know for fc\'s if you run less than 1/4 tank and acc hard or turn hard then there is fuel starvation to the pump. is this a known problem for fd\'s?

FD3S Efini - I am getting dual filters but at present thats all, this will change in the future though... so any ideas on the problem based on the fact I do have the standard cat?

L18M - I did have a start of the night then filled up and it still happened as above. thats why I filled up and when I left the garage and hit the gas it didn\'t happen so I though great!!..... until it happened

Well it\'s not been revved to anywhere near that in the last 6 years Adam! So i\'m out of ideas,:xconfused

As far as the low fuel i have nailed mine hard with the gauge on near empty and never felt any issues. A pfc mapped by a rotary tuner will sort out all your probs mate and at the time get a decat pipe from one of the many breakers/tuners on here.

It still sounds to me like fuel cut, are you using v power fuel ?
Title: loss of power in second gear

If it was fuel cut he\'d have bruises on his forehead from the steering wheel.

I\'d bet a substantial amount of cash on a dodgy valve or solenoid in the rat\'s nest. It\'s a long and drawn out process checking them all unfortunately.

Thanks guys, yeah using V Power fuel.

Sounds like I\'ll be saving for a PFC and decat pipe then.....

If it\'s a knackered solenoid or check valve, you won\'t solve it with a PFC.

Sort the cause, don\'t try and mask the symptoms.
