Title: Coaches
Post by: MrHanky on September 22, 2010, 10:32:28 AM
My 6 year old is off on a school trip today and I just started wondering why the heck seat belts are compulsory in cars but not coaches.  Here we have a coach full of 40 or so kids and they don\'t even have belts.

I realise that I am maybe wanting to wrap my kids up in cotton wool to a certain extent, and that in the old days when we were growing up, we used to ride in coaches with no belts whilst holding sharp knives and broken bottles "and it never did us any harm" :)
But I just don\'t get why it\'s law in one vehicle and not another.

I maybe wrong but i thought the law about this had changed a while back and that coaches now had to be fitted with seat belts
I guess it could only apply to new ones. Was it a new coach or some old banger?

Wearing a seat belt on a minibus, bus or coach
If you are travelling on a minibus you must wear a seat belt if one is fitted (or a child restraint if available). On a bus or coach, if you are aged 14 or over you must wear a seat belt if fitted. Regulations requiring children aged three to 13 years to use seat belts (or child restraints if available) in buses and coaches will be brought forward as soon as possible.

although there is no law forcing bus companies to install aftermarket seat belts YET!...... I can\'t believe a school would hire a coach without them already fitted.... I think this is something that you should bring up with your child\'s head master. :Grrr:xconfused:Grrr

I think the law is that they have to use them if they are available.  I guess there are stacks of old coaches on the road that do not have belts.

Much like old cars not having them, you dont have to get them fitted if they weren\'t fitted when new
