Title: 100W+ headlights in an S5
Post by: soldave on September 09, 2010, 02:03:24 PM
Wondering if the stock harness will handle 120W or 130W headlights in an  FC or not.  We all know how brittle the stock wiring harness is in  these cars and am thinking a lot more power in the lights is gonna heat  up those wires quite a bit more.  But is it an excessive amount?

If it is, then is a parallel wiring system what you\'d need to get it  working, right?  Bear with me as I\'m not the most electrical-minded guy  but want to make sure I\'m thinking this through right.  Looking at the  wiring diagrams it looks like I\'d need to get a 30A inline fuse running  from the battery.  This would then go through 2 new relays alongside the  2 original ones (the signal wires being spliced so it all comes in at  the same time) and then a ground from the 2 lights back to the battery  or a suitable grounding point.

Does that sounds vaguely sane or am I completely off?

The wiring is quite thin :(

I\'d go with HID\'s to be honet - the standard 35W HID\'s take less power and give 3 times as much light - and there are the newer 50W HID\'s now too.  You often get a complete harness to wire the HID\'s back to the battery -with a relay switcher that just connects to one of the stock headlight sockets - with very little current required to operate a relay.

You can get HID\'s in H4 format if you have the light units that have the replaceable bulbs (liam on here had sealed light units in his jap spec), and if you get the shrouded type with the cover over the end of the bulb and motorised reflector/bulb - the same light will do HI and LO beam and not blind oncoming vehicles.

You talking like one of these kits?

You might know but the JDM FCs don\'t have the FTP lights; not sure if the UK is the same or not.

yes like them kits.
i have a jdm fc and have hid\'s fitted no problems.
the only thing im not too keen on with hid\'s is that they not ment for flashing as they take a second or 2 to warm up to full brightness.

Not a huge issue here in Japan as the flashing headlights for anything doesn\'t seem to be used here (or at least not in my part of Japan).  Just have to make sure if I get them that I get bi-xenon ones.

Yeah the jap spec FCs have actual bulbs rather than FTP lenses :) just be careful on which sort of HID you get as the motorised part of the HID can be too large to fit in the popup housing
