Post by: L18M on September 03, 2010, 09:39:42 PM
firstly, thanks everyone. all your positive comments helped me stick with it :Thumbsup!:Thumbsup!:Thumbsup!

so got it back in a right old mess, literally so today i was up at the crack of dawn (literally) to wash her and hoover.

before:

after:

forgot to take some outside pics as one side of the skirt is broken in transit some how and it in 2 bits now!

but anyway, half way through cleaning i thought i\'d go post office to collect some stuff and get more supplies for fc.

then... (i\'ll let the pics tell the story)

deja vous

water temp rose then before i know, pop *steam coming from bonnet and my car is taking a ....*

after some investigating, which took a while found this

this is the pipe connected to the bac? and other end round the back of the water housing, a hole and also the end popped off so needless to say, if anyone has one kicking about i\'d be muchos muchos appreciated :)

Have informed tuner 1 and hard to say if it was an air lock or pressurised system.

Story of problems since collection.
picked up at reworx yesterday and drove home, all was ok but after 1.5 - 2 hrs got caught in traffic near parents take away, briefly stood still and water temp started rising. got home ok at about 100 degs then turn off engine and water ....es out of expansion tank.

let cool then filled up then on way home home. got home and started to pee a bit again.

today took short trip (4 miles) to post office, all ok, then on way back car stalls at roundabout (maybe cos primaries are leaking a bit, geff said primaries were leaking a bit but would be ok for run in).
car pees a bit, restart and then about 2 miles down the road ka-poof, steam and water so pull over immediately and turn off engine.

after 4 hours total finally got it towed home.

i think this means i\'m having a competition with nik to see who has the worst luck with rotaries!
never been to rs with my fc :(

will replace pipe when i find one then do champers test / burp the system then see how it goes. either will be ok or back to tuner 1.
Just hole it\'s not messed up any of the seals.
Title: Oh My Days!!!!!
Post by: TiddlesRX7 on September 03, 2010, 10:04:21 PM
Oh no. There was me thinking the problems were over!
I may have one of those pipes but won\'t be at my other engine till monday. If you haven\'t got one by then give me a bell or text to remind me to have a look for you.

Post by: L18M on September 04, 2010, 11:48:57 AM
cheers lee, just rang them and the engine is gone.

just wondering if its possible to make one up with silicone hoses?
Title: Oh My Days!!!!!
Post by: Prof on September 04, 2010, 12:50:50 PM
Liam,

Which hose has gone ?

I see you\'re using the Series 4 water neck - with the filler cap on it.  Are you after the small hose from BAC to water pump neck or the big one ?

Bad luck that you\'re still having problems, but I think it\'s likely you had an air lock and maybe some local boiling / air pressure buildup.  I reckon after a fill and bleed a couple of times it will be fine.

Dave.
Title: Oh My Days!!!!!
Post by: L18M on September 04, 2010, 04:11:55 PM
thanks dave.
its the smaller hose from bac to water pump / neck bit. about 10mm ID.

i went to local motor place and brought a straight bit and twisted it round a bit to fit.
tired to burp the system ( water cap off let run for 5/10 mins, water temp went to 50 degs c then turn off and let it cool a bit then topped up. repeated.)
no air comes out when cap off and engine running.
its just water in there no coolant as there was a littlle leak from a threaded jubilie clip which has not been replaced.

thinking if i know how to burp the system properly then i will flush out and fill with water/coolant mix.

i have the heater turned to hot and low fan (should be same as high fan?)
will top up again once its cooled and go for a spin, hopefully i wont be waiting for a tow truck again.

*off to look for the thread about burping the system incase i missed somehting*

ps: ade, dont need the hose now, thousand thanks :)
Title: Oh My Days!!!!!
Post by: Prof on September 04, 2010, 04:18:07 PM
I find it can help to jack the front of the car up - as the heater matrix hoses are quite high and a good place for an airlock to happen ;)

Also - make sure the expansion tank is at the max fill level - and the hose to it is on tight - the hose goes onto the centre pipe in the expansion tank, which should be in the liquid - when the system cools, it creates a small vacuum that draws coolant back in to fill it.  If it runs low, it can suck air back into the system.
Title: Oh My Days!!!!!
Post by: L18M on September 04, 2010, 04:21:43 PM
cool thanks dave, will try that before i go for a spin.
will cable tie the hose to expansion tank.
water in expansion tank is at max ans not moved. maybe as you say it is sucking up air as the hose fits but not tight fit.

Post by: L18M on September 04, 2010, 06:43:03 PM
done blitzboy\'s patented burping
"warm it up ,cap off,so it then opens up the thermostat approx 78 degrees, water will start to gush out then switch off top up, wait 5 minutes, repeat about three or four times"

and had to refill about 3.5 ltrs. bit more than usual non burping.
going for a spin to sainsburys now to have a test :)

Went for a run today and got to point B but didnt make it back to point A on its own steam. FC overheated and started peeing out water, which contained oil, a lot of oil! so seems a seal / gasket has gone and oil is contaminating the cooling system.

NOT A HAPPY BUNNY!! :(

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude can\'t tuner 1 get anything right? I take it he will honour any warranty on the engine. Hopefully he will let you take it somewhere else to be fixed.

There is a chance that you\'ve a cracked turbo (CHRA) - and that \'s where the oil is getting in - but given track records I\'m not so sure - hope to god it\'s not the engine mate.

this is rediculous. TBH I\'d try and get the tuner to pay for another rotary builder to do it.

Liam,

Why not try contacting me as i fear that members of this club are only getting one half of the picture from your side and this, as we have seen before, leads to instant banter and bad mounting when others are unaware of all the twists and turns in the story. You Have my numbers and two email addresses for me. You could always let me know what the issues are so we can work out a resolve.

I can\'t solve a problem if i don\'t know about it.

To be fair, Liam didn\'t slag you off or put any derisory comments, he just posted \'aaah, it\'s died\' basically meaning he\'ll get in contact with you.

Hope it isn\'t the engine mate, and it\'s sorted again asap. :(

Fair comment. If my earlier post was unjust then I am sorry. But you have to admit there has been one problem after another with this car build. Hopefully this will be a minor problem for both you and Liam.

James, I did text you this morning / afternoon once i found the problem. also on friday when i had the problem i did call you 1st thing to let you know, ok well 2nd thing after calling the recovery truck.

will talk to you tomorrow about this.
i did not intend to seem for this to be bad mouthing in any way, just stating the fact that something is wrong an i am disheartened about it.

Guys as i said i know where these threads can lead nothing more. Was just a observation from prior events.

Liam,
Yes we spoke about the trailer company damaging the skirt and the fact that you had very high pressure system. We\'ll chat later today to see the best way forward.

Not that then - oil/water mixing isn\'t a good sign then - aren\'t many places where they can mix...

just saw your post on SiH\'s thread, maybe the lim is on wonky or a gasket there is gone rather than the engine itself.

oh well, was fun whilst it lasted even if it was driven at under 3k rpm off boost.

I will have a light cover in white you can have for free but may be another week or so til you can have it as i am away from home. These are really hopefully just small issues for you and once ironed out you will once again enjoy your car without the fear of something going wrong.

I wouldnt say no to a replacement car if you\'re offering :rollin

good question. not sure what brand seals etc McCarthy used.
i asked for fd corner seals but not even sure if he did or not.
right now i dont really care and want a healthy working fc =/

The springs are stronger in the FD though.
