Title: a little help for a stupid question
Post by: brundish24 on August 28, 2010, 03:00:32 PM
right just wondered if i jacked up the rear wheels on axel stands and the ran the car would the speedo still work. if so what would be the safest speed.

The speedo would work yes as it is connected to the gearbox and detects it\'s rotation.
I would say that it is pretty iffy to run a car on axel stands as if it came off then it could cause the car to jump forward. Just don\'t run it on axle stands.
Regards
Carl

Why are you looking to jack it up and do 30mph? In principle it sounds a dangerous idea and there may be an easier way if we know your thinking.

my speedo gauge is not reading the correct speed my pfc reads for example 30mph and so does my sat nav but the speedo reads 20-25mph so i have to do 40mph on the speedo to do 30mph onthe pfc and sat nav.

ive tried taking the needle of and replacing it with the ignition on but its still the same, obviously it got a mph converter on it and thought that it might be the problem?

has it been fitted with a speedo converter? if not its still reading km!

and cant you just use the sat nav for your speedo?

yes it has got a speedo converter but would it be a mot fail it just seems to always be 10mph wrong but its easyer to look at the speedo.

Go for it once you feel comfortable thats it\'s steady and stable enough..
You\'ll be in the Car anyways so if you feel it may be getting unsteady then just back off and you could quite easily clutch in and brakes on... ....simples...

Although I\'m still not sure what you are trying to achieve.

mot don\'t test the speedo as far as i am aware. I have run acouple of car on axle stands (when i was much younger and silly) nothing happened i would think as long as the car is off the floor and stays off the floor it will be ok.

However if it comes off the stands and shoots you, back to the future style in to the wall, i didn\'t say it was ok.

my plan is to do 30mph and ajust the needle on the speedo to match it one thing witch i dont understand is that the pfc read out give the correct mph but displays it in kph how does it know to do that would it know about the speed converter.

I\'ve had this problem, i had a Jap import car fitted with a UK speedo and a speedo convertor that slowed down the speedo   I just removed the convertor and problem solved!!

I\'ve never heard of someone just pulling the nedle off and glueing it back on!

jst leave it and use the pfc or satnav, you know roughly how fast your going by the speedo just glance at the sat nav or pfc now and again.

iirc in my last rx7 it overread 165mph was 158mph on the sat nav

There is an adjustable converter available for motorbikes that has been fit before. Kev yorks had one fit in his first Cosmo !

The converters are never acurate! Actualy all MPH speedos are incorrect! if you plug in a sat nav in to any car with an MPH speedo, they will all over read on the dash! simple reason is it gives you some tolerance with speed cameras etc! don\'t ask me why this is so!! If you took out the converter, the speedo would be bang on but in Kmh!

I used to do a lot of work for an SVA company and at a speed test you were allowed to be around 18MPH out as long as the speed showed say 70mph and the car was travelling under.....mad or what!!
One of my Subaru Imprezas was actually bang on the target in every speed test such as 30 / 50 / & 70 and they were going to fail me as the speedo should have read higher than the actual speed :Viking.
I think the speedo restrictor for the RX7 is either in or also in the factory settings on the ECU but there are far more qualified people on here that\'ll let you know.
Dave.

Personally i would ask a tuner very nicely if you could borrow their rolling road for 5 mins or at least incorporate your needle move with a tunning session.

MOT does not test speedo accuracy only sva.

running a car while it\'s up on stands just sounds so unbelievably dumb. if you have a proper post ramp then do it, but if it falls off the stands there is no way you will be on the brakes quick enough.

The safest way.Just jack one rear wheel up and do it on that. on the rev limiter that one wheel will be doing about 380 mph (yummy). safety first though. It is advisable to put a massive tray of marbles and ball bearings under the raised wheel. then if it falls off the jack the balls will stop the car lunging forward.

Doubt ball bearings/marbles would be a sensible thing to do as you could end up shooting them out the back wheel like bullets

how the hell are you gonna know when to stick the needle back on? by your sat nav?

And i doubt the needle just pops off and back on in a different position

If the car is on axel stands the sat nav will read zero anyway lol

Just dont do it!

im not going to do it but i would use the pfc commander read out not my satnav, the needles do come off but you got to be careful as ive done it befor and put them on wrong but its alsorted as im going to get some new dials.
thanks for the help every one but it was a bit mad thinking to do it tho lol.
