Title: Vandalism... or the way of the future?
Post by: Ian65 on August 25, 2010, 08:47:30 PM
The owner of this car has spent $30,000 on it converting it...

Obviously put his heart and soul into it but it just seems a shame to me to take the 13b out of it.
I wouldn\'t mind a drive in it though!

Here\'s the link to the auction...

Yeah, if you stripped some weight out of it and changed the gearing, I wonder what it would do the Santa Pod strip in??

He is a member on Rx7club and I\'ve replied in one of his threads about suspension for the car. In some respects it great to see a FB in such great condition showing off just how versatile the car layout really is.

Didn\'t realise its a 30k build though. Bet its brisk !

looks lovely, but 30 mile range at 60 mph is a bit weak!

It is the future, but this Fb only has a 30 mile range.
Incredible job he\'s done,he must be gutted selling it.
It\'s a myth that leccy cars are 100% clean, yeah u wont die sticking your nose up the exhaust, but power stations[oil/gas/coal/nuclear] all produce pollution at source.
He should wait a few more years till petrol doubles in price again,he\'d have more interest.

In terms of speed, there are a couple of blokes with an electric beetle running 11 seconds in the VW Drag Series.  It\'s eerie watching it burn out in almost complete silence then disappear off up the strip.  It doesn\'t have a great range but it\'s an effective drag car.

electric drive is amazing. you get a flat torque \'curve\' with instant response and crazy rpm numbers, the only limit on your eventual horsepower being the size of the battery.

The owner who spent the $30,000 would have been better off getting a brand new factory built electric car with four times the range.
Plus with the added security of knowing that the battery pack might not take your head off in a bad smash. I\'d want a lot of reassurances about insurance etc.

Seems a waste of a fine car to me.

Impressive, but essentially it seems to be using very old technology - that\'s the problem with doing stuff like this as a privateer - the march of progress is so rapid in the larger companies, that everything will be yesterday\'s tech almost immediately. But I guess you do it for the challenge, mroe than anything else, which should always garner respect.

I\'m curious as to how much it weighs?

Interesting read :

Its the quality of available batteries that will dictate what distance can be travelled.

I was impressed the other night when I watched Bug Jam on the box

There was a black Beetle running a 9" ford rear end with the same sort of engine bay as this 3rd Gen,

Easy to dismiss until you realise it has the equivalent of 450 brake and runs 11 second quarters as they then proved !!!

Not saying I would want one but it shows they can be a "power" to be reckoned with !

Its impressive as a a technically exercise, and will be rapid on the strip, but I would suggest that they would do a setup like those HUGE dump trucks, as they run on electric, but have a massive onboard diesel generator, they are diesel hybrid vehicles, so if they were serious about making that a daily drive they could think about installing a small engine in the back to power a small generator to keep the batteries topped up :)

It is the future, look at the A1 Hybrid that uses a small Rotor as the engine coupled to a generator !

Just how much electric BHP would you need for a daily ???
