Title: Ordering wheels how do i know what offset to do?
Post by: Koose on August 23, 2010, 09:59:35 AM
Hey guys

If i wanted some wheels for my car, (RX7 Turbo11) how do i know what offset to get and what lip will be on the rim.

Was looking at some Rotas. Thinking of 7.5 front ans 8.5 rear ?

Also, what would be advisable tyre sizes for track handling on these wheels.

Mark

if you know your stock wheels size then just plug in the numbers into here
http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp

will show you how new wheels will sit.

as for offset and lip. low offset does not necessary mean you will get a lip. it depends on the design of the wheels.

You planning on 17" or 18"? think 17" would be better for track imo.

shamless bump for the vs which are 7.5 and 8.5 thought are 18"

First up, thankyou for becoming a full club member :Thumbsup!

These days offsets and tyre widths can be as much personal choice as practical choice, it may be an idea to contact Rare Rims at the top of the page as I\'m sure they will talk you through the various configurations available to you

Hope this helps

offsets and widths are dependent on what kinda fitment you want and what you\'re arches are like.

I have 8 and 9 j advans which are 35 and 38 offsets respectively. they line up almost perfectly and thats with stock arches. Ideally I\'d have smaller offsets, but the tires would rub the inside of the arches, if the arches were rolled it would be fine. Also if you\'re running tire stretch you can let away with a lot lower offset depending on how much stretch you run.

as for track...18\'s on the back, 17s on the front :D

I\'d not encourage a 17/18" stagger for track use, 16" front, 17" rear, or 16/17" all round IMO. (if you\'re going serious track work that is - the occasional bit of track use, then whatever)

ROTA\'s are cheap, but I\'d be more patient and get something lighter and better. Patience and keeping your eye out for things is best IMO. But then I run 9.J ET0 rear with 225/45/17 and 8J ET-10 205/40/16 fronts, so I don\'t know so much :p

Care to quantify this?

I want to stop this sort of silly talk, if it\'s all the same.  You\'ll find Rotas are light, and strong, and proven.

You\'ll also find you can generally get a new one if you crash on track...

If you make me go and get my smashed wheel pictures collection I will, but I\'d rather not...  you\'ll cry when you see all the JDM tyte wheels that have failed for no reason :p

Read this before telling me about poor quality:

FWIW, ive had 3 sets of Rotas, all have been on high powered cars, all have been given death, one has gone sideways into a curb at faster than im shamed to admit, and ive had no issues. They arent invincable, afterall, you cant argue with physics sometimes, but id certainly put Rota at the higher end of the market. Also, a friend of mine had a set that had a polished lip, due to lack of maintwenance 4yrs on the lip was showing signs of salt corrosion, rota gave him a set of new wheels at a cost of £25 per wheel. Got customer service ?

Ive gone for a Rota Drift Grid in pale bronze. 17 x 9 and 17 x 8.

higer end of the market? They\'re cheap knock off\'s arn\'t they? Was under the impression that they\'re only used in competition because of sponsorship deals?

disclaimer: the above statement is what the internet has told me. Rare rims may make a point, but it is also worth noting that they sell these rota\'s.......just a thought

Sponsorship deals are simply a discount to help our friends and dealers to forward their motorsport aims.

Nobody has got a free wheel, or money to run our wheels, contrary to popular belief. ;)

We\'re the control wheel for the Ma5da Racing championship for example, they chose us due to good supply, and the fact we offer a lighter product that the previous Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2s.

Our wheels are similar to many others, but you\'ll find you can say the same of most wheels you like, several JDM companies make wheels that look identical.  Equally, many JDM wheel makers actually have wheels made all over the place - Take Enkei, a large number of wheels are made for them in India.  Buddyclub - Taiwan.

Rota make a lot of OEM wheels for manufactures, as well as wheel for various JDM labels including Enkei.

If you actually stand for example a Rota Slipstream next to the Desmond Regamaster wheel it\'s similar to you will see the spokes are thicker, and the wheel is a little heavier, due the the fact it has been totally re-engineered and fully JWL and VIA tested.  It is not just a mould taken off a popular forged wheel then made cheaply and cast.

Equally take a look at that link, you\'ll find it shows XRays of some Rotas after some time spent on an R35GTR on Full Slicks.  Like or lump the R35, there\'s no argueing with its weight or G-Force, and the loads it can put on wheels...

Many people who race / drift Rotas do it because they\'re well priced, light, strong, and when they have the innevitable crash, they can replace a broken wheel.

All wheels break, if you crash, you\'ll break them.  There are 3 popular pictures of Rotas being broken online, all are a result of a crash except the subzero... that had the caliper smashing into the spokes which was the sole cause of failure, we know the car and wheels and owner, they spent 2 years being used only on track days without a hint of a problem ;)

good work there ^^

I was under the impression there are quite a few wheels which are lighter than the rota\'s though?

Either way. There isn\'t enough decent dishu in the range to make me want to fork out for some

Don\'t take it personally, it was just a passing comment, not enough to go affecting your business!

Essentially they\'re:
Boring designs (if Rota copy others wheels design/idea why not do something interesting?)
Common - because they\'re pretty well priced made etc I know, but still - seeing them on every other car puts me off, especially combined with point 1!

I have NO problems with build quality or anything like that (my comment implies that there\'re better wheels out there, not that they\'re crap), I don\'t have any because they just don\'t float my boat.

And I doubt you\'ll get another reply from me for months if you do post a reply to this - I\'m in NZ atm and on dial-up!

Haha, fair point on the lack of reply ;) It\'s more a general statement of fact I would like to make, rather than having an arguement, dont want to give anybody a hard time :)

Rotas are lightweight, about as light as you will find for cast wheels in their size.

The Work Emotion Kai is actually heavier than the Rota Torque that looks similar, in the same sizes, I know because I have both sat in the warehouse.

Most places quote weights that are make-believe, so on paper look the same or lighter than Rotas, but when you put them on the scales it changes ones perspectives a little.

No dishu?

Eh hem...

This is an 18x12 ET0.  Show me another dealer in the UK with this sort of size in stock ;) 18x12 ET20 also stocked by us in the UK.

Nope, u cant edit posts.

Personally, I love rotas and would love a set for my fc, cos its the look Im going for, however a lot of people prefer my dished chomies, unfortunately Im skint or else I would have a set in an instant, unless rota fancy swapping, lol, mine have been valued at £900 so I could probably get the set I want for that, lol
