Title: Just bought a rex!
Post by: Matt Shepherd on August 23, 2010, 04:26:51 AM
THERE SEEMS TO BE A MAN DRIVING A SUPER BIKE STUCK TO THE UNDERSIDE OF MY BONET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

omgggggg this has been the most incredible night of my life! the noise this engine makes is just undescribable!

When  i took it out for a test drive...i was like whats wrong with this car?  :s i was in 5th gear at like 65 and when i pressed the accelerator,  pretty much nothing happened. My natural instinct made me change gears  the moment i heard the engine (2-3k revs haha) then i was like wait? i  remember being told they will seem sluggish because you really need to  use the revs!

And my god can it use revs!!!! Ive nvr in my life  had so much fun at a roundabout, just leaving it in second gear and  feeling the engine come to life was so amazing! ROARRRRRRRRRRRRR

wow!  im still in shock! ive yet to find a need for 5th gear on an A road, i  enjoy the power much too much in 3rd/4th lol. when i finally get the  revs up to think about using 5th im doing silly silly speeds lol.

what  can i say? im just so happy! i managed to find the very top spec 192  (even with the sexy little fins!) at 21k miles for 6k! im over the moon!  i spent the remainder of the 1/4 tank i got with it, learning the gears  really. filled it, then drove for about 120 miles sitting at 70mph in  5th, just to see what kinda mpg it could return. i remembered reading  how extraordinary low mpg can be the sign of a cat on the way out.  anyway at 1/2 a tank, id done 170miles! which was amazing considering  sometiems i got bored and dropped it to 3rd and went tearing down like a  madman (http://www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

Is it worth getting a compression check to be on the  safe side? i noticed in the history, the spark plugs had been changed,  but the coil packs hadnt. is it normal to have very little acceleration  in 5th gear at 60-70mph? (3k revs) i mean it increases, theres just no  oomf like in the lower gears.

Its 2005 / 21300miles / 192 and sunlightsilver :D

Glad you\'re enjoying it. :3gears-rh

I think the optium speed for max mpg in a 192 was something like 81mph - I remember being told that the next port opens up at around 82mph but as I don\'t really understand what that means I could have got it wrong. But I wouldn\'t bother, far more fun to beep away and the engine works better if you do - if you wanted fuel ecconomy you wouldn\'t have brought an RX-8! :Giggle

Poor acceleration at low revs is normal - the RX-8OC expert used to say that the rev counter should be above horizontal if you\'re accelarating, so at least 4k revs. TBH you\'re not going to need that sort of accelaration in 5th gear unless you\'re doing well over the speed limit!

I\'ll leave the experts to advise on compression tests etc. I didn\'t change the coils on my 2005 192 until 40k miles but it wouldn\'t be a bad idea to consider doing it as a precaution.

One word of caution - if the weather is as bad with you as it is in Glasgow at the moment (and most of the country) be careful. It\'s a very different beast to handle in the wet.

Hi Matt

I have just changed my coil packs the other day and it made a differance. My RX8  192 has done 30000 miles and is a 2004 plate. I would recommend the change. You will get new coils from MRP at a good price. I live up in Scotland and in the bad weather you have to take care in the low gears on the bends. Good to go on the straight. Have Fun.

when i had my 8 the thing that struck me the most was the interior, so comfortable and at night looks superb.

Coming from a 7 the power is not quite enough but the overall package for the price is superb :Laugh

Was fitting a tracker to one, and had to park it onto his drive, only drove a few feet,  but what a nice motor :)

^^^^^^^^  Errrrrr!!! Did you turn if off whilst still cold ?? If so you may just have flooded it, unless you are very very lucky.
