Title: mileage display gone,gone, gone
Post by: playtime on August 20, 2010, 10:28:35 AM
Random one here folks. Digital mileage disappeared from my dash the other night. Disconnected the battery earth lead, and planned to pull out the clocks to check for dry solders, but left that night, and reconnected the battery. Next journey, the mileage was back on show?!  To cut a long story short, if I disconnect and reconnect the earth lead of the battery, I will have mileage display working for that trip, but wont work the next time I start unless I do the whole disconnect / reconnect thing. Was thinking of fitting a direct earth wire with a switch from the gauge to the battery, but thinking thats a rough way to fix this. Anyone got any better suggestions? Cheers

the capacitors are on there way out in the cluster, change them before more damage happens!

Mine does this as I always knock off the neg. term. when parked up, as I only use the car once  a month, and It takes around 10mins of driving to charge those 20 year old caps ? the milage remains correct but trip starts randomly. but once its back its stays all ok. (untill the next time -then repeat)
How are those caps changed anymore info. sounds a bit common this?

Good link there above, wil pop down Maplins sometime get the bits and have a go at this in the winter time, dont think I\'ll do it just now as its only a niggle nothing major, but good to know it can be fixed. I would guess those caps cant be more than a pound or two each at most ?

Any of you guys get around to doing this in the end, Just put my car back on the road last week after winter and mine are not working at all now. Wish I had got on with it during winter now.:Hammer

I did it and it worked for a while and then went again. Be aware that on a FD, if your odometer isnt working, for some obscure reason, nor will your coolant buzzer!
