Post by: Koose on August 17, 2010, 07:57:42 PM
Hi folks,

Been asked for some piccies of my turbo 2 .. Bought last week. Full service history up to 2003 and 69k. 1991 Turbo II UK car Now on 71,700 and last road tax was 2005. Really havent had much chance to give it a decent look over but initial finds:

Body 90% excellent.
Interior 90% excellent
Belly ......rusty as hell
Suspension components the same
Engine has good \'compression\' and spark
Fuel park is seized with crystalised fuel
All interior and lighting electrics work but Headlight motors dont seem to work.
Mazda alarm and central locking also doesnt seem to work.

100% std.

Tyres shot, brakes uber shot, exhaust shot.

Started cleaning the wheels and though i should take some piccies \'as picked up\'.

Old chap walked past tonight after id cleaned her and said \' Nice lotus\' , i guess i should take it as a compliment, but ive yearned for an FC since i was 17 (now 27) , as cool as Lotae are, ive never patricularly yearned for one.

Basic plans - get it working perfect as a std car.

Long term plans - Full exhaust, FMIC, intake, bit more boost and a decent management set up if insurance allows. Black diamond grooved discs all round, DS2500 pads, goodridge lines, dot 5 fluid. Gaz coilovers if they do em, i know alot of the jap scene bum Teins, but ive always used Gaz and theyve done me well. This is assuming they even do em for them.

My previous car:

Evo 3 512hp@1.5 bar boost. Didnt turn it up for drivetrain reasons.

Went .... up after a \'mapping session\' and through a rod cruising off boost at 65mph on the A11. Wonder if my GT3076R would be any good for the FC:wiggle

Anyway, chuffed to finally be in the world of rotaries, and hope that its an enjoyable stay.

Hi there, nice looking FC you have there, bit of an odd exhaust though!

The GT3076R might be fine, don\'t forget that rotaries can take larger turbos than piston powered cars, im bolting a T88 to mine :)

I will look forward to your project!

I dont really know where to start in terms of mods, what boost they can handle, when it needs fuel upgrades, whats reliable etc Id like a lag free 260-280 ideally, the GT3076 is maybe overkill!!

Post by: CTworkinprogress on August 17, 2010, 09:36:04 PM
No theres never overkill!!
Welcome to the Rotary world, I found it a little different than the piston one with my FD!!!
What did you do with the III, you cant have both!?

Why not ? haha, no, well i realised it was worth an awful lot in parts, so i broke it for spares.

Shame you broke the III, is a nice car.

this is a very good starting point for all TII peeps who want to mod.

Thank you ever so much L18M.

Can anyone guide me towards a full engine back exhaust set up on ebay or wherever, just really dont know where to look.

Ideally twin exit and not too loud, but im open to anything really.

Any help greatfully recieved.

Wih regards the exhaust, and anything else on the RX i\'m finding that you need to take your time and look into things properly, think about where you are going with it, do things right and therefore only do things once.  good luck with the project

ebay for a cheap(ish) and cheerful one but they are quite loud.

worth going catback first rather than tub back as you will get boost spikes.
best get fcd, port wastegate if you can, air filter (cone), good service, check ht leads are in good condition.
i\'m sure i\'ve missed out lots of others but best stick to the bible. play safe :)

i\'ve a fcd i can sell for £50 posted. if you interested?

Worth checking the error codes on it too - see what it throws up - might save you an engine if it picks up something on the way out.  There\'s a thread on here about it somewhere - just need a couple of wires and a small 12v bulb or 12V led.

Gonna need a FCD at some point i guess!!

Gave the old girl a very brief polish on the front this morn before other duties. Only got to do bonnet and wings, but i think shes come up really well for a nr 20 yr old car,  especially one thats sat for so long.

In some of the pics you  can see where the polishing stopped about 2" into the doors. Please excuse the lazy \'eye\' and the dirty splitter....its complicated.

Thanks, she needs alot of work, but i think too many classic cars are given up on these days, understandably as well, as financially its a hard time for us all, and to get these in good condition is does cost alot. I mean with this being sat for so long, it needs at minimum, 4 tyres, discs, pads, caliper rebuilds, fluid change fuel pump, filter, battery and a service.

Anyhoo, stuck doing trivial things till pump arrives, pulled out a seat to check if my Evo3 Recaro Speeds will fit, as theyre very comfy and supportive, and match the colour scheme. Whilst out i gave her a hoover :

But was confronted by the dreaded chewing gum......hmm to the drawing board i think.

I\'d disagree personally - I\'m guessing you\'re not getting this on the road really quickly so I\'d get:

3" turbo back exhaust. (and port wastegate while car is in bits/being worked on)
Decent air filter.
Aftermarket ECU rather than FCD - then it\'ll have reasonable mapping upto about 0.9bar.

I\'ve also put Magnecor leads on mine, and gone for standard replacement plugs - but might be worth going for uprated ones straight off.

Fit a boost gauge at the same time of course, and whatever else you want! (I have water temp and oil temp)

Nice car though, good to see something as rusty as mine was when I got it! Nice work polishing, the black on these comes up really well with some work doesn\'t it?!
L18M is a great guy and can get loads of bit\'s from Japan for you if you need anything btw!

I have a HKS mushroom that works well. Hopefully going to down the FD intake manifold with FMIC route sometime though.

You can also get uprated TMIC\'s, obviously less piping = less lag.

I have a remapped Ecu to suit your car. Fuel and ign are mapped to 1 bar/14.7psi - better than fcd as the fcd simply tells the ecu that the boost is not higher than stock so is a safety net at stock boost, can become a liability at higher boost.

Get a decent fuel pump and FMIC and exhaust system, boost to 1bar with the mapped ECU and I would put my finger on and easy 270-290bhp depending on the health of your motor.

Woohoo.. remove the old:

Install the new...

.and after 5-7 yrs of not running....we have:

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/Cooptub/RX7%20Turbo%20II/th_DSCF1353.jpg) (http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/Cooptub/RX7%20Turbo%20II/?action=view¤t=DSCF1353.mp4)

And promptly burst the rusty power steering cooling bar at the front :flamed  :wiggle

Wouldve videod it a bit more from the outside but the battery ran out on me camera. Still.....the fun starts here, she runs, and boost , thats gotta be a step in the right direction.

Great news. Another one a bit closer being on the road again. The PS cooling pipe is a common problem with these cars now. I\'ve been eyeing up one off a late 90\'s Ford Mondeo as it looks like a easy swap with minor mods.

Well, having not been able to do much whilst waiting for the brake parts :

Black diamond grooved discs front and rear
Ferrodo DS2500 pads front
Mintex 1144 pads rear
Rebuild kits front and rear calipers
Goodridge braided lines

I did a few trivial bits, removed headlight motor (need a new one)

And took off the rusty wiper arms, wire brushed (on a drill) back to bare metal, jenolite where needed, etch primer and a couple of coats of satin black paint :

Always think its the little details. Will pop to halfords tomorrow , trusty trade card at the ready and get 3 new wiper blades to replace the 7yr old(+) items.
Title: My restoration project FC3S Turbo II
Post by: L18M on August 24, 2010, 10:50:31 PM
looks good :)
i did that once but forgot to put primer and it rusted up again pretty quick lol

have you thought about the flat blade wipers?
such as flat blade wiper (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAZDA-RX7-RX7-1987-1995-FLAT-WIPER-BLADES-20-2022-A-/370421237561?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM#ht_2340wt_982)
(only suggesting as my fc wipers never stayed flat when wiping)

works much better than the old style wipers.
either that or the \'no wipers\' stuff you put on the windscreen works well on fc\'s.

Hi Liam,

Damnit, didnt catch your post in time and just bought 3 new Bosch aero blades.

Few new bits for her:

New pads front and rear (DS2500 Ferrodo)

Recaro Speeds, should offer a bit of support without looking to out of place, or too modified :

Also have 4 grooved Black diamond discs, goodridge braided lines, Dot 5 fluid and caliper rebuild kits front and back.

I havent got them on there yet, however, the new subrames are sort of counter sunk, hard to describe, but it ends up making it so that the seats almost sit flush on the floor. Hopefully it works as im 6\'4 so dont have alot of room to play with !!

Er yes, but for some crazy reason the red ones go for £7-800 a pair, the greys go for £150 a pair. Seems mental to me as you could just recover a grey set. Also, if you end up with some with a worn drivers bolster, you can get new recaro bolsters for £30, takes 15mins to install (assuming seat is in car).

Monte, did you get my message regarding coming over an teaching me a bit about the car ?

Fairly certain i can getyou a passenger side to help out Liams sale, although alot of people just have a drivers bucket, its not a good look having your passenger climbing off you everytime you get sideways. So i vote a pair of buckets for the win.

Back to me me me me:WaveBye:Thumbsup!

Went to visit Monte as heonly lives about 35 minutes away, hes taught me a lotand shown me alot too, so big thanks dude!

You\'ll need to wind the pistons in on the rears. It can be a ..... to do if you don\'t have the tool (ask Grinder). I managed just with a pair of long nose pliers and a lot of patience.

OK, we now have two fully working headlights. Thanks to RK Autos for supplying the motor.

Recieved the pas pipes today to replace the leaking one, but didnt have a tool required.

Finished battery to boot and all works lovely:

Also fitted Banzai Dual run alternator pulley and belts. Need an airgun to torque up the alternator though as i cant stop it spinning enough to secure it to a decent standard.

Like the paintwork, like the shiiiiny air filter, and like the fact you\'re sorting out the brakes.

Only thing I have to say I\'m not a huge fan of is those rims & tyres.  IMO they just look a bit too modern/hardparker for the rest of the car.  But hell, what do I know about looks!

I got em through my brother, he has a small modified parts internet site Silverstorm Auto Improvements, he gets them through Rare Rims as theyre the UKS head Rota Distributor. I got a good deal :)

I too am eagre to see what can be done with the sills, its bugging the crap out of me i mightve done all this for nothing.

That rust shouldn\'t be too bad - it\'s pretty much what mine was like tbh (got photos somewhere, but at home, not here in NZ). I just cut the rust out in straight strips all the way back to clean metal and welded in flatish strips. My sills were fine, it was the floor pans that were gone (it looks like that\'s what you have too), so it was just that join.

Anyway, it\'s certainly coming along, good work mate, looks like you\'re having fun!

Could always try them out ?

I saw an article in Jap Perfoemance Mag, i think sparked by one of the Journalists experiences, about all the cheap parts now being offered on Ebay over the UK made and designed parts. Some of them were fine like the catch tanks i think, some of them were said to be much inferior, like (at the time) the \'silicone\' hoses.

Even if you left the roaming on by mistake that a lot of charges. Go to orange and ask them for the breakdown in charges. I have seen so many cases like this where they will reduce the amount for you to pay if its been an honest mistake. has to be worth a try.

Hi folks,

If anyone knows anyone whod be interestd in this car, either in its current state , or minus some of the pricier mods like the £1000 rims/tyres/nuts combo . Then get in touch, with christmas coming up and my current run of crappy luck, i really shoud think about selling, i have a familyto think about.

To get it backon theroad, it needs the exhaust bolting up, and welding to the sills/edge of the floor. Engine runs very well.

All the best

skidalfedan is looking for one but think his budget was £1500, just enough to pay off your phone bill lol

koose its a shame,

If you need a little bit of your funds sell the goodies but keep the car! ive already sold one after putting a new engine in and now im back with two rx7\'s oi had no job and i had just moved in to a rented house with my girlfirend i had to sell everything including all my cars to pay fo rent etc.

Times got better 6 months on im self employed , bought a house and bought two rx7\'s times always get hard but i ALWAYS regret selling my cars.

but if you do break it lol i would buy that rear valance glass cover lol.

good luck koose im getting screwed over by orange but thankfully its only £100.00 not £1500+ lol.
