Title: Leak From garrett Turbo Oil Feed Pipe Joint
Post by: C J R on August 17, 2010, 07:43:38 PM
Help required please.

After my recent track day jaunts, I have noticed the start of a very small oil leak from the joint of the pipe that feeds oil to the turbo shaft.
(When I say small, it is only enought to cause a light smoke haze when the car is standing in the pits, but when I\'ve checked when the car is cold, there is a residue of cooked oily material in the same location.)

Better fix it before it gets worse, is there a gasket between the flanges or an o ring ?

Picture shows the flange I\'m referring to.

Thanks
Chris

Give these a ring and they will sort you out the correct gasket as a paper one may not help  :chat

All Garretts use the same bolt hole spacing so you should get one in the post quick O/K

bit of a revival...

same problem.. leak from turbo as in pic either where the oil feed joins the tub or leaking tub?

i just replaced the gasket (paper gasket) and still some smoke coming off it (off the oil feed area, definately seems between the hotside and coldside of the tub housing. not sure if its old oil or the leak still there.

question time:
1) is paper gasket ok or what other gaskets are there? i gave the guys above a ring but they never got back to me =(

2) how do you know if the leak is the tub itself?

thanks thanks =)

to make sure spray the bearing housing of the turbo with a load of brake cleaner when its cold that should get rid of any old oil thats there then take it for a spin and see if it comes back you should be able to see easily if it comes back as to where its coming from  :)

only worry would be if the sealant gets into the oil line then might be a bit of a prob having some sealant stuck in the oil.

just in case this might help...

a friend recommended tightening up the oil feed bolts after a run as the metal expands, then also tighten again once cooled.
i did that and it seems to be better :)
