Ok guys strange one here.
Just had an engine transplanted from my old FD into a new shell, and when I\'m either coming off boost, or off it the car makes a strange almost \'fart\' like noise.
I\'ve had a look at a few threads and they mention the stock BOV not closing fully could be an issue, thing is I had that connected previously (at least I\'m 99% sure I did!)
I can grab a picture of my engine bay later and post that, just at work at the moment.
I need to get this sorted as it does sound pretty bad, unfortunately I can\'t drive everywhere on boost!
:burnout
Cheers
I think you are meaning like a Moo noise?
If so it is the airpupmp, usually if there is a fliter kit it does it.
You can unplug the electrical connector Grey plug on the airpump and see if it still does it.

Carl
does sound like the moo\'s..
put a small pipe/filter on it to dampen the noise :)
did u have an induction kit before? the pipe in question used to re-circulate into the box, hence no noise.
mine developed it when i fitted used hks pipework, and didnt have a cap for the pipe. doh!
Carl: That could be it, now that you mention it I do remember a plug being disconnected previously... It was just the left as your looking at the engine IIRC.
John: I do have an induction kit mate. I had the whole engine etc put into a new shell, so I\'m thinking the lads connected all the plugs back up like Carl stated.
Is it the pipe that goes out from the BOV that you mention to put a filter onto?
Cheers

hope this helps.
John that particular pipe is already connected
i\'m pretty sure this is the "moo" pipe... have u done anything else? is the heat-proofing still on the underside of the bonnet in your new shell? may have been dampening the noise before?
other than that, sorry, bit stumped.
Damn was hoping I\'d pinpointed it.
Mind you the pipe could be a loose? I\'ll have to double check when I get in tonight.
Yep the new shell has heat proofing on the underside, my last car didn\'t.
No worries at all mate, cheers for all the help!
I\'m going to have a mess about later, just a nightmare as I have to be moving to hear the noise lol.

this was my solution to the moo\'s.. and was an excuse to put something shiny in there..
oh, and excuse the loose red vac hoses.. bought 3mm at japfest/rockingham raceway this weekend.. and it keeps collapsing under vacuum, hence the return of the nicely stretched black one from BOV>Plenum..
Carl:
I\'ve circled the bit below that I think you\'re referring to.
Just unclipped there, and having driven it I can say that the noise has gone, so that\'s a good thing!
In terms of the airpump, do you suggest only to plug it in during MOT time, and leaving it off usually?

John:
This\' my setup at the moment, I REALLY need to get some more shiny bits in there. They\'re on the cards one I sell off the leftover bits from my old car :D
Cheers again lads.
Yes if you have got a cat plug it back in for MOT\'s.

Carl

Spot on bud, thanks for the tip :cheers
shiny is always good :)
i could do with relocating my BOV really... but so tight for space all the time!

Well relocation to my engine bay would free up some room for you, its a win-win situation ;)
lol, like your style zee. i\'m not sure if i\'ll be tasking u up on that tho ;)
glad the moo\'s are sorted.
now i\'ve freed up some space with different filters, i think it\'ll be going down there somewhere when i get some more hoses :)
Ah well, the offers there mate! :)
Yeah cheers for your help on that, it was so annoying it was ridiculous!
The boy racer part of me now wants a loud pschhhh, so I think I\'ll be on the lookout for a BOV haha
Thanks
Sorry for hijacking the thread, but finding it very interesting, because Ive just started my new FD from properly cold this evening, for the first time since I bought her (sitting a week), started on 2nd turn, was running about 2200, then suddenly a big Moo and a whoosh noise started! I was wondering what the hell, the revs suddenly dropped to about 1400, and a drone sort of noise was coming from the engine bay. I blipped the throttle and the noise went away as the revs dropped but kept coming back intermittently for the next 5 minutes. Once she was up to normal running temp, she settled to a lovely smooth tickover at about 950, and the noise was gone, but theres a weird wee clicking noise when blipping. Semms to be coming from in around the intercooler area. PS Im running twin aftermarket airfilters. Is this airpump on the way out? and more to the point, whats the airpump meant to do? Sorry for all the questions, but new to these mad rotary thingies! :Hammer
My knowledge of the air-pump is based entirely on this link mate:
http://www.fd3s.net/air_pump.html
So as Carl mentioned its good to pop it back on for MOT as you have more chance of passing emissions tests, otherwise disconnect it.
As for your symptoms I\'m not too sure bud, sorry :(
Try disconnecting it, and seeing if the sounds goes away. It won\'t harm the car not having it connected.
You can then either leave it off, or if you need a replacement let me know, I\'ve got the airpump from my old car.
how high does it rev when u start from cold and for how long? have a feeling this is pretty normal for the first few seconds. however, not sure about the whooshing on idle =/
the moo\'s are a pretty standard side effect which can only be cured by piping/filter or disconnecting the air pump.
the clicking is fairly normal aswell for me, think its the airpump starting stopping? someone correct me if i\'m wrong.
Cheers lads. The clicking does indeed sound like a relay to be honest, and I must try disconnecting this pump thing. Engine seems in fine tune otherwise. Was worried, if I ran with the pump off, she would be even harder on the petrol than she already is. Wouldn\'t normally grumble as I didnt buy her for economy, but driving her back home to N.Ireland, she went through 130 notes of petrol and that was taking her easy, as I didnt fancy breaking down on the wrong side of the Irish sea :>
haha yeah I know what you mean mate, I drove her on the motorway with the pump connected and did notice an increase in economy, I don\'t think it was my imagination either!
The noise isn\'t as bad on the motorway, so it may be an idea to connect for those longer journeys!
yea, come to think of it, she seemed to be worse in the lower gears, but quietest when I was cruising about 65-70 in top. Car didnt really get cooling down for approx 17 hours, with only a couple of 2 hour snooze breaks in service station carparks and the ferry crossing. Silly question, but going by what I was reading on the link above, am I right in thinking, if you remove the air pump, the car will run richer? I have also read somewhere, if the cat is removed and a free flow stainless system fitted, the car would run lean. I thinking remove the pump, cat, fit a new system, and std ecu would be fit to cope? Maybe Im way off here?
