Get the motor built with whatever kit the builder uses, for 400bhp it doesnt matter which one it is.

Do you really want to go with BNR turbos??  you still have the problems the rats nest will cause, unless you renew all the solenoids ect.

I would go single, T04E or T04S or a GT35R

Go single it will save you a lot of grief and is better... won\'t be as packed less heat issues etc

mmmmmmm like the twins but then i\'v not been in a single rx before unless sumone wants take me out for a blast :Thumbs-up so i can make my mind up:rolleyes::Giggle  am mainly gonna be using the car for street use i\'d like the low boost, i also have a celica gt4 sooo ....\'z me off trying get away lol dont make boost still 3k 3.5k

guess il need to do sum searching on turbos

the other thing is that the bnr are in the price range if i wanted to go single i\'d have to get the rexy up and running then next year get a single.:burnout

most likly pipe will be doing the work

The whole point of running twins is for the sequential set-up.

If you run BNR\'s non-seq then you might aswell go single.  Lot less hassle, looks better and runs better.

BNR\'s are likely to be more expensive than a smallish single...
Title: 400bhp Mission
Post by: suba on August 12, 2010, 09:38:22 AM
Why on earth do you think that?

a set of BNR\'s = About £1600
A decent single turbo kit with wastegate and manifold = £2500 (then you have to mess about with the loom etc.)

having run sequential BNR\'s and now moving to a single I\'ll be able to comment  on the two setups soon.

I will say this though - The BNRs running sequentially had a far more laboured transition than the stock twins, on track they were pretty annoying in slower corners.  The response when dropping below 4,000 rpm was like running a big single... if I was still using them I would have gone non-sequential without hesitation.

WHAT single turbo are you going for mate ? what are you going to do with the bnr\'s mate ?

what u mean under 4,000rpm not much boost ? whats ur review on the bnr\'s mate ?

mostly going to use the car for street use and quater mile time to time wen i go to shows.

yeh wer do you get the bnr are more money to buy lol? i\'d be saving min 1k with the bnr\'s

I\'ll be using a T04S.  My BNR\'s were sold a while back.

In Summary - for street or 1/4\'s the BNR\'s are great, on track they were a pain - couple this with the heat buildup from the twins and going to a single was a no brainer.

I had to add a restrictor to a vacuum line to get the primary to boost over 0.6 bar - the transition then lasted 400rpm, which is fine if you are flooring it from 2,000 rpm - you get a nice kick at 4,300 from the secondary.

Here is where they are poor - let\'s say you are braking from 6,000 rpm, then you exit a corner at 3,500 rpm.  You will not drop back to the primary (the same is true of the stock twins) which means you are on 0.5 bar until 4,000 rpm or so - you might as well be running a T51 in terms of response, and it is not always possible to drop down a gear.

I\'d would run them non-sequential for that kind of use anyday of the week...if this is the case then why not a single....a second hand single turbo kit and wastegate will work out about the same cost.  Any issues with the turbo then you can remove it in 10 mins and go for a re-furb, AND you get to ditch the rat\'s nest.

If you ever sell the car a single turbo rex is also worth a lot more than one running twins.

As I said I can give a full review of BNR\'s Vs. Small / medium single when my car is up and running...

In Summary:

1.  Street / everyday / occasional drag car on stock ports for 400bhp ish at the fly - BNR\'s running sequentially

2.  Track day / fun car / 440 flywheel power+= Single.

Once you go single you never go back.

You can start with a fast spooling single, which will easily push you over 400BHP. Rx6, GT35r, T60-1 or one of the medium sized triple ceramic ball bearing turbo\'s by Comp Turbo are all good choices and will spool just as fast or faster then BNR\'s non sequential and make more power.

Later you will probably desire something bigger and will need to look for a 70+ mm inducer turbo to take you into the next level and into the 500 club

MMM OK what kinda rpm will the single turbos make boost ? sumthing same line the twins ?

as i mentiond i dont want to be pulling away in second and have lagg up till 3500rpm that\'s just noo good for street use as soon u make boost u ether run outa road or u have to break lol.

think its gonna be rebuild with with a streetport in the mean time while i decide on a turbo.

true about going single give u a lil extra value on to the rexy.

always wanted a apexi rx6 turbo on my last rexy.

regards to tips and seals is there any point going better for reliability and peace of mind or at that power wont make a diffrence ?

as i hear thats 3motors that have pop\'d this month on the foarm with as lil as 1100 miles!!!!:(

They will make 1 bar by 3200-3500 depending on porting. But they will start making solid boost long before that. They are all very good turbos for the street. While you won\'t have the instant boost like stock sequential, the trade is well worth it, no way will the stock twins keep up on the street or the track. Not to mention all the heat you take out of the engine by removing the massive cast iron restriction bolted onto the block, and coupled with the simplicity and reliability of a single turbo and you just can\'t go wrong.

I wasn\'t really thinking about new to be fair... BNR\'s never seem to go cheap on second hand market, but you often see small singles going for a song as people go large.

OK sooo am guessing i need go for bigger porting than a street porting if am gona go single ?

what will the effect be if i have a big port but say am running stander\'d twins ?

as am hopping to send my block to pipe over the next few weeks so he can build the block then send the car down for the block to be fitted, hope i can find my injectors lol

Decide on the turbo and then ask Pip to port to match it. :yes

its all about how much power you want really, if its 400bhp, id just stay with stock twins and a big streetport, if you want more power than that then buy yourself a single kit, or make your own to save money
Title: 400bhp Mission

There is a lot more too it than that - see my earlier post on this thread.
Title: 400bhp Mission
Post by: kompactor on August 13, 2010, 03:39:46 PM
I would just go with a street port, the larger you port it, the more overlap it has and low end drivability will start to suffer. It will require a higher idle and more fuel. What happens when running a large port with twins or even a small single is that the engine wants a lot more air in the higher rpms and the turbo\'s can\'t supply it. They run out of breath. This leaves a flat feeling in the upper rpms. Even with stock ports those turbo\'s listed aren\'t going to feel laggy, they make positive pressure very quickly.

not really, there has been people driving around at that level for a while and not had issues, its all about the condition of them.

Im running mine at 17psi and i drive mine nearly everyday, but when i up the boost to 20psi i think that will be the time i put them under strain

99 spec twins are another option. They tend to be in better condition. But for the money of bnr\'s it\'s just  more worth it to go single turbo. While your power goals are very low, most people end up wanting more power later. Pretty much anything will get you the power you\'re after, but imo single turbo is the way to be.

thanks for all the help and info guys

If you want 400 out of twin turbos,,,speak with Jason of Super7..I think his Rx7 is twin turbo and currently producing 400bhp....speak with him and see what he says..

He said 400 bhp which is what manufactures use to rate hp. That\'s more like 340 rwhp. Shouldn\'t be hard to hit that with a street ported engine and about any turbo @ 12 psi.

as you have mentioned before SiH but theres loads of people running more boost than that and they last, im running 17psi/1.17bar and they are fine.

andysmee is running 390bhp on stock twins and has been for a long time.

I think yours just went bad ill be honest.

also ross at dragon was 400bhp on stock twins and had no problems at all.

i think 420bhp is the point when your pushing twins to far for them to last long term and its time to go single....this power is when your engines ported of course

EDITED as it\'s not worth it.
Dude, seriously- take a look at the advice some people in the UK are giving you. There\'s nothing wrong with trying new stuff, boundaries need to be pushed, and kudos for doing that, but by seemingly ignoring what everyone else says and telling them they are wrong, you are putting a lot of people\'s backs up, and burning some very useful bridges.

As soon as I went to 0.8 bar from 0.7 the primary oil seals went when I was running the stock twins..... they may take it for a while, they may not.

everyone bases things on there own experience, for you, they blow up at 360bhp, for others they are fine at 400bhp.

Sometimes its the luck of the draw, im sure if i asked people how long would stock twins last at 17psi they would say 1day yet ive been running them like that for a few of months, it can go either way.

all im saying is yes..get yourself a single turbo if you want but dont dismiss the potential power you can make on twins, because if you can hit 400bhp which people have then that surely is a big money saving

I used to run 1.4bar on my 99 spec twins. It was reasonably fast, building another 99 spec TT at the moment and tempted to do Pre turbo WI to raise comp map efficiency.

Post by: Aubec on September 08, 2010, 02:29:43 PM
My advice would be not to feel pressured to buy either of those just because they happen to be available right now.  The TO4E could be overpriced at £1300 without clarification on the history: \'4000 miles in the UK\' could mean \'80000 miles in Japan\'.

It is also very much NOT a \'direct bolt on that will instantly give you a huge power increase\' - at a minimum you need a new map!

There is/was a TO4E for sale on here with most of the gubbins for £780 in the last few days, it had the wastegate plumbed back into the main exhaust rather than a screamer IIRC.

Turbo kits come up all the time - by all means buy one of these, but don\'t panic buy!
Title: 400bhp Mission
Post by: suba on September 08, 2010, 02:40:09 PM
Good advice - as long as the manifolds and wastegate are in good condition if a journal bearing turbo needs a re-furb then it\'s not the end of the world in terms of money....if you can get a look at the kit before buying and also know the history, i.e. from MRC then it helps.

Another point that I missed is that a screamer pipe will fail the noise test at most tracks...:)

Not sure that there is much I can do on that front!  At a grand they are certainly worth it.  When I got them form the US I ended up paying about £1800.:mmmm

PS - dont forget that I\'d recommend running them non-sequential for track stuff, but there\'s nothing from stopping you trying them both ways.
