Just wandering what fuel you guys are using. There\'s no Optimax (or equivalent) where i live, and i\'m wondering if regular super unleaded would be OK for use in an import, or if i would need to get some boosters etc.
I think optimax is 98.5 RON, and regular unleaded is 95 RON...doesn\'t sound like too much of a difference. anyone know what RON jap fuel is, or to put it another way, what RON the ECUs are normally set up for?
finally, do you think it makes a noticeable difference NOT to use high-spec fuel...or, contrastly, using a booster to improve regular fuel?
thanks for any input! :D
Optimax or super. Never used anything else but my GTiR wouldnt even start with 95 in the tank and thats when I realised it was worth paying the extra.
I use Super Plus
Optimax...Optimax...Optimax....and loads more Optimax.
I don\'t make any claims for performance enhancement, but the extra RON points are cheap insurance against detonation.
If no Optimax available, then BP Ultimate, and finally normal Unleaded 95, but only enough to get me to the next Shell garage.
Richard
Jap stuff is 100RON init, & best here is optimax which i understood to be 98.6 (that .1 can make all the difference (http://mindscraps.com/s/otn/wink/Selbstironie.gif))
Can always get sum octane booster if yer pushed into the lesser stuff....
Si
u can buy 115RON racing fuel from the us and u wont be paying tax on it :D
I have a supply of enriched uranium from the east that I use. It tends to foul the plugs though and makes everyone think you have underbody lighting.
US RON is different to UK RON. It wont aqctually be that high.
Where would you get thatfrom anyway? If it was here it would cost a fortune!
Oh, o.k. that might have been a fib (err what are all those suited men now doing outside my house).
Optimax for me as a prime choice, then BP market-hype. Not all SULs are equal - I\'ve had quite serious levels of knock before off Sainsbury\'s SUL in my other car at track days ona number of occasions - found I did better with ordinary UL and octane booster.
lol at Gary\'s back to the future stylee fueling project :rollin

If you could find fuel rated as 115RON in the states tha would be well of 120RON here as their standard pump gas is rated at 87RON (equates to about 94RON here and there super is 91RON if memory serves with is close to 97RON here. No idea why this is, apparantly it is measured differently!
Anyway you can get 76 race fuel here anything from 100RON unleaded to 106RON unleaded (which are road legal) or go stupid and 120RON leaded race fuel (not road legal)
Which reminds me on the way back from Japfest Paul Whiffin (at least I assume it was him) went past me in the Whiffbizz Supra and there was a distinct smell of race fuel!!!:D
I see! pretty much as i feared! there\'s not a shell garage anywhere near me, would have to go into a completely diff town. scary that it can make such a difference.
I noticed ben linney is including 10 litres of 76 cool blue racing fuel (think it\'s 106 RON and road legal) with new FDs, which was why i was wondering. The stuff is about £80 for 25 litres i think. Ouch.
I\'ve read that octane boosters don\'t really work, apparently max power tested a car with a variety of fuels and boosters and noticed no difference. although i\'m not sure if the car was imported or not. anyone got any details on that, or tried boosters themselves?
Whilst you can still get it at the moment 76 have stopped producing Cool Blue AFAIK.
Lee
oh well, they\'re still doing the 102 RON range (i think!) which would be more than enough! can\'t remember what the range is called, but i do recall seeing it on the website!

A truly professional panel of judges then :) :rollin
Octanebooster may not make your car majorly faster but you can\'t argue it will run better dependant on its mapping of course
Optimax is 98 octane, BP Ultimate is 97, though the subject of degradation in the petrol station storage has been done to death

yeah v v true...sure the test was probably done in a nova/corsa/saxo anyway! :)

have fun
Hey! thanks for that! some good value fuel there. think the large container holds 247 litres (it is gallons x9 /2, right?) and it works out at £1.37 per litre. too bad it\'s probably the size of my house!even the smallest container is almost half the price of the 76 racing product, and has a higher RON.
also 113 is kinda overkill, anyone know if you could mix it with super unleaded? would that work ok? might be the best method, still be 100+ RON (i think) and work out pretty reasonably, all things considered.
or would that lead to some problems further down the line?
I have been using rf102 (possibly 102-104 octane), also believe that you can set up an account with shell to have higher than pump rated fuel delivered to you. Think you can get the rf102 fom anyone that does the rallies, it runs very very well in the rx, only problem is that it costs around £2.50 per litre but shell do a similar one around 102 octane for less.
Really? Never knew shell offered any services like that, although like you said £2.50 is kinda expensive, paired with the good ol\' mpg figures i think it might well bankrupt me! :D

If you contact shell direct you can set up an account, I think gleaner can stock it and deliver it for you as well. Still hunting for competitive prices myself. Will put up a post if I find any. Only reason I stumbled across shell was a local garage owner does rallying and picks up a few 50litre drums every weekend. Put an order in with him and he drops them off for me :)
Thanks, i\'d appreciate it. Did you get a chance to have a look at the site yonner posted? seems like very good value to me, but i\'m not too experienced with all this! :)
Whilst looking around the stands at Santa Pod at the weekend I picked up a card from an outfit who sells various octane fuels.
Can\'t remember exactly but they ranged from 100 to 118 ron
Price for 113-114 was £54 for 5 gallons (included VAT)
I will bring their card in tomorrow and post details for everyone.
Top racing at the pod - saw a couple of 300mph+ (sub 5 sec) runs
by the top fuelers. (my ears are still ringing)!

Was that lead free ? - hmm £10 per gallon, time to get a dataloggit and look at several sets of maps ^^
Cool, look forward to the details! Sounds like a good day out too! :D
I found the details but its as per previous post

You can\'t beat the sound of two top fuelers (circa 7000bhp each)
The Shoeboxes (57 Chevy\'s aka Grease style) hitting 215mph in 6.5secs running about 10,000rpm across the line - wow
(they do have 12.5 Litre engines with either a blower or Nos running on Methanol)
OK, cheers for that. Does look like a good site.
Must have been spectacular...215mph in 6.5 seconds? Really? That\'s ridiculous, i was reading about the HKS R33 which does 8-second quarters, and a term speed of 188mph. Thought that wouldn\'t be beaten...oh well, victory to the shoebox i guess!! :D Are they road-legal? Judging from the fuel set-up i\'d guess not, but i was wondering if it was a RWYB event?
Either way, i thought FD mpg was bad...wonder what they return? Bet it costs a fair bit just to fuel a 1/4 mile! Heard on Top Gear that the good ole Charger does 1mpg.
The Shoeboxe\'s run a twin magneto set up of some sort that allows them to run normal petrol for the burnouts \'lowside\' and then they flick over to the \'Highside\' for running on Methanol.
They all looked road legal with lights, bumpers etc
I know for sure that one of them was road legal (it looked like an El camino pick-up - black with full flames and driven over from Sweden (bet his fuel bill was terrible)
There was no RWYB as it was a proper european drag event.
Commentator said they use about 8-12 gallons of methanol per run! and i bet its a damn sight more that 90p per litre!
AndyR
Might have to create a new thread for this topic!
Probably should do mate, though not sure where it would go! Sounds very scary, parachute stuff!
8-12 GALLONS per run? They must surely have sponsorship deals or something, that\'s crazy. Sounds also like they were road legal, although to be fair I suppose a RWYB event would not be practical as it would probably cost an unimaginable amount to get the cars there!
