I recently decided to give my car a good run after receiving a full service :)
On the motorway, foot to the floor in 3rd, change up at beep, foot to the floor in 4th, change up just before beep, then foot to the floor in 5th but experienced no power and a strange but loud "shhhhhhhhh" sound, lifted off and applied slow accleration and was fine.
Does anyone know what caused this?
Car is almost standard, with a cold air induction kit and Apexi rear exhuast section.
i think ii have the same problem mate but only in 5th does it feel like the turbo is hesitant cause thats what mine feels like some times
I\'m not sure hesitiation is the right term, as the turbo didn\'t kick in at all, although I lifted off quickly after getting the problem, so I don\'t know if it would have kicked in.
But yes, I\'ve only experienced this in 5th gear.
it sounds the same as mine i was hoping someone could give me an insight to the problem is your car still running twin turbos? cause mine is and i thought it might be a solenoid problem on the second turbo
I have had this (or something very similar) twice over the last few weeks.
I was getting this problem in all gears as soon as the second turbo was supposed to kick in, a little less throttle and it was fine. (although it only started doing it when i was in Fifth and when i slowed down it was still there. i didnt do it on the way up to fifth).
Stop switch engine off for 30 secs or so and retry to see if the problem is still there. It appears to have fixed the problem. As it hasn\'t done it since (touch wood)
:)
I am running twins. Recalling the problem more, it does sound like hesitation or lurching.
The problem has only been in 5th under heavy load, e.g. redline in 4th then change up, foot to the floor.
From my research on WOT hesitation, these could be the culprits: -
1) Spark plugs. These were checked at the service, but it would be worth re-checking.
2) Wires. I think this means the plug wires, recommended 10mm Magnecores.
2) Fuel filter. Surely this is part of the service check, but worth checking again.
Next time I\'m in the car I\'ll try WOT-ing in 5th from lower revs in 4th and see what happens.
Donato : could your ECU have dropped into safe mode or something? Turning the car off may have reset it? (Guessing here :) )

Any answer i would give to the above question would be a guess too!!! ;)
That does remind me i really do need to give mine a service soon!
:)
I get that sometimes too mate. I\'ve put it down to not having enough boost to get the 2nd turbo running. Mine tends to do it ifs its not totally warn n snug. I\'m hoping a new ecu will cure
whats ya boost like? :-)

If it was any of the above you\'d get the same breakdown during WOT in other gears, esp 3rd and 4th?
The fact that you heard a whistling noise of some kind (by the sounds of it) suggests that its a boost/vacuum hose related problem. Especially the fact that if you accelerate lightly it doesnt manifest itself. I had this same problem on my car, cane it thru the gears and some times the next shift would leave the car making zero boost. If I let off and reapplied or reapplied slower the car would make boost again.
Chris, didnt you have a boost gauge fitted? repeat the test and watch the boost and report back...also see if its better when the car isnt really hot.
20b_boy - also see if its better when the car isnt really hot.
Both the times i had problems were on very hot days and the car was definitly up to running temp. Could this be resolved by increasing the airflow or increasing the size of the intercooler?
Cheers
Donato
collapsing hose maybe?
I\'ll let you know if JPS find anything that\'s causing it on mine dude :)
There is a wierd alternative....
The intake pipe from the filter can go soft as it ages and gets hot. As the turbo\'s suck in air from the filter, and the engine gets hot, this pipe can collapse causing less air to pass into the engine.
I know this sounds bizarre, but I know of 2 cars (inc mine) this has happened to, and replacing the pipe seems to solve the problem.
I only experienced it in 5th after caning it through the gears.
Yes, I had a boost gauge wired in but the steering column housing for it only arrived at the weekend. I have fitted it all now so I will have a look at boost the next chance I get - excellent, I get to use the record functionality of the Def Link Control II unit :)
I am quite careful about waiting for the car to be warm enough before booting it (although I am not eactly sure what temps things should be before doing that - a good 15 mins of driving though).
I won\'t get a chance to test it out until Sat though.
I\'ll report back with my findings.
think you\'ll find it happens intimitanly if it\'s anything like I\'ve got which it does sound the same. I\'ve found that dropping the revs down to 3k (where it\'s not sitting near the 2nd turbo) and flooring it / changing down a gear makes it work right away... gives those a try see if yours does it..
that\'s why I put mine down as a boost issue / leak/ etc
Andyp : JPS sound like they are going to be very handy - is it true they only work weekdays and not weekends?
Archbish : I have been looking into getting hard / silicone pipe replacements. I\'ll take a closer look at the intake pipe for signs of stress damage.
yeah he\'s a nice guy is Leon (to sound northern) Getting my service done there as I don\'t wanna drive 4 million miles hehe
Wouldn\'t be suprised if they did only do weekdays. I\'ve only been there on weekdays as I thought getting my car sorted out was more fun that work ;D
OJ - pipes collapsing
That happened to my lancia delta years ago...
Where can you get replacement pipes?
Yes Andy, mine was intermittment too. And yes the hotter things are the worse generally as old rubber/plastic squashes where you dont want it too.
This is the main reason I (and most others I expect) decided to go single turbo, the whole twin control setup is a lottery once the car is a few years old :( It can be a really time consuming and hit and miss affair to fault find it. I elected to put the labour towards conversion instead in the end as it just pissed me off tooo much.
I stripped the FC\'s engine on saturday and the way the vacuum hoses and omp lines were a) snapping off b) impossible to remove off nipples or c) popping off nipples without touching them kind of makes you realise how the turbo control system on a 10 year old FD can start to become troublesome!!
yeah with you on that Rich, I\'ve been all over my engine looking for duff hoses n stuff to explain it. Gonna let someone who knows what he\'s doing to have a go now ;)
Mmm single turbos always tempting, we\'ll see what the moneys like in the future :D
nah mines not much of a prob, just wanna get rid of that annoying 0.5 bar :D

More patient and collected than me mate! I was used to running \'silly\' bar on a daily basis, it did my head in for a month or so and then it was \'Enuff!\'
Yeh i\'m at that stage...may cost me a new ecu but I must have more booooooooost :D
